Choose an exit early, approach using cover, coordinate who watches and who boards, and avoid turning the extraction point into a prolonged fight. The exact steps below apply to the original Warzone 2.0 / Modern Warfare II DMZ; the newly announced Modern Warfare 4 DMZ has not yet published a verified tactical exfil procedure.
First, check which DMZ you are playing
DMZ mechanics are version-specific. The original Warzone 2.0 / Modern Warfare II mode centered on completing missions and surviving to exfiltration. Its documented routes include marked exfil sites and Rescue Hostage contract helicopters. Call of Duty describes the original mode as an extraction experience in which squads search for valuable items and fight to survive toward exfiltration (Call of Duty’s 2022 overview).

Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare 4 blog, updated October 5, 2026, describes a separate DMZ as a persistent extraction experience set in the Hajin Exclusion Zone and lists a planned global launch date of October 23, 2026. The blog’s DMZ deep dive covers environments, threats, vehicles, HUD and Tac-Map intel, and other features, but does not establish a safe-exfil procedure. Do not assume the legacy mode’s radiation, smoke use, exfil sites, or hostage helicopters work the same way in MW4 DMZ; consult the game’s current instructions once available (Call of Duty’s MW4 Forward Operating Blog).
Choose whether to leave before the squad reaches the exit
Make the decision while you still have room to change course. Compare the value of the gear and mission progress already secured with the uncertain reward of staying. If health, supplies, or confidence are running low, another objective may not be worth the added exposure. This is a practical risk decision, not a guaranteed way to survive.

In legacy DMZ, check the map for a marked exfil and consider a Rescue Hostage contract only if it is available and your squad can complete it. The hostage route is not an automatic escape: it requires securing the hostage and extracting with them, and the contract may be infrequent or difficult (Call of Duty Wiki’s Rescue Hostage mission page).

Neither route is always safer. Choose based on the enemy position, your squad’s condition, the map, and whether the contract is actually available. The original guide also warns that expanding radiation can close exits, so waiting for ideal conditions can turn a manageable escape into a time-pressure problem (Digital Trends’ legacy DMZ guide).

Approach a threatened extraction without bunching up or rushing blind
Use cover for exposed ground
Do not sprint straight across an exposed approach just because the helicopter or exit is close. Move from available cover and use smoke to obscure a crossing when it makes sense. The historical guide suggests smoke for exposed approaches; it does not establish that smoke guarantees concealment or works identically in later DMZ versions.

Give the squad simple jobs
Before moving in, make sure everyone knows the immediate plan: watch likely approach lanes, keep track of teammates, and communicate whether the squad is boarding or disengaging. Stay close enough to support one another, but avoid crowding into one vulnerable spot. There is no source-established universal formation or best route, so adapt to the terrain and threat.

Have a fallback if the site is held
If another team is already watching the extraction point, do not let arrival force you into a long fight. Decide whether you can safely disengage, use another route, or abandon the attempt. In legacy DMZ, exfil zones could be camped, and squads faced danger both on the way in and during extraction (Digital Trends’ legacy DMZ guide).

- Reach the marked exfil. Take a covered approach where possible and keep the squad together enough to respond to threats.
- Call the helicopter. Treat the arrival interval as exposed time, not a safe pause.
- Scan and position while waiting. Watch likely approaches, communicate any change in the threat, and be ready to leave rather than defend the site indefinitely.
- Board promptly when it is safe. Once the squad can board, avoid lingering for extra loot or unnecessary combat.
- For a hostage contract, follow its objective instead. Secure the hostage and extract with them on the hostage-evac helicopter; the mission requires leaving with the hostage.
Digital Trends reports that in the original mode a player downed inside the helicopter could still receive successful extraction credit if not fully eliminated. That is a version-specific detail, not a reason to board carelessly or a rule to assume in MW4 DMZ (Digital Trends’ legacy DMZ guide).

What is not established for MW4 DMZ
The official MW4 material available as of October 7, 2026 confirms the mode’s persistent-extraction framing, Hajin setting, and planned October 23, 2026 launch, but it does not document tactical exfil steps. It also does not verify that legacy exfil sites, hostage contracts, radiation behavior, smoke tactics, or helicopter rules carry over. Treat any such guidance as specific to the original DMZ unless current MW4 instructions confirm it. Call of Duty’s July 2025 note that the original DMZ Beta remained free-to-play within the Modern Warfare II install concerns that legacy mode and does not establish MW4 access terms (Call of Duty’s July 2025 announcement).
