To make your phone last longer during a gaming session, lower screen brightness, reduce the game’s graphics or frame rate if its settings allow, and turn off background activity or connections you do not need. Keep the phone cool and ventilated. Power-saving modes may help conserve charge, but can change display behavior or performance; the best settings depend on your phone, operating system and game.
Which changes help most during a gaming session?
Games that use demanding graphics or require frequent interaction can drain a phone quickly. Google includes these games among the activities to avoid when trying to stretch a Pixel’s remaining battery. No universal setting or tested percentage of extra play time applies across phones and games, so treat the adjustments below as ways to reduce avoidable power use, not guaranteed runtime gains.

| Change | Likely trade-off | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| Lower screen brightness | The display may be harder to see, especially outdoors. | When the screen is brighter than you need. Google recommends reducing brightness to save power and help keep a Pixel cool. |
| Lower graphics quality, resolution or frame-rate cap | Visual detail or smoothness may decrease. | When the game offers these settings and longer runtime matters more than maximum visual quality. |
| Use a power-saving mode | Some display or system behavior may change; effects vary by phone. | When you need to conserve charge and can accept the mode’s limits. |
| Turn off unneeded background activity or features such as hotspot | Apps or connected devices may stop working as expected. | When those tasks or connections are not needed during play. |
| Choose Wi‑Fi rather than mobile data, if suitable | Connection quality, latency and availability can differ. | When Wi‑Fi is reliable and appropriate for your online game. |
How should you adjust the screen and game?
Lower brightness without sacrificing visibility
Reduce brightness to a comfortable level rather than keeping the display at maximum. This can cut avoidable display power use, and Google specifically recommends lowering brightness as part of keeping a Pixel cool. If you play outside, keep enough brightness to see the game safely and clearly.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Look in the game’s graphics or performance settings for options such as lower visual quality, resolution or frame-rate limits. A lower frame rate can make motion look less fluid, while lower graphics quality can reduce visual detail. Not every game exposes these controls, and the sources do not establish a consistent amount of battery saved by any particular setting.

What background activity and connections can you turn off?
Close or restrict nonessential background work and disable a hotspot or tethering when nothing needs it. Google recommends keeping Adaptive Battery on and turning off high-drain features such as hotspots when they are unused. Adaptive Battery is aimed at app use and background activity; do not expect it to make an actively running, intensive game use dramatically less power.
For online play, keep the connection the game needs. Google suggests Wi‑Fi instead of mobile data as a heat-prevention measure when possible, but a weak or unsuitable Wi‑Fi connection may not be a practical substitute. Check that a network change does not disrupt play or worsen the connection you rely on.

How can you keep the phone from getting too hot?
A phone may feel warm during gaming. Google says resource-intensive activity, including gaming while charging, can contribute to overheating. Heat can also make battery drain faster and damage the battery, according to Google’s Pixel guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
- Play away from direct sunlight and avoid enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces.
- Lower brightness and reduce the game’s workload if the phone is warming up.
- Take a break from gaming while charging if heat or battery longevity is a concern.
- If the phone becomes too hot, stop demanding activity, disconnect it from power, move it somewhere cooler and leave it unused until it cools. Do not put it in a refrigerator or freezer.
Google says Pixel protections may reduce CPU performance, charging speed or wireless and mobile connectivity when temperatures are high. Other phones may behave differently; follow the temperature guidance for your model rather than assuming all devices use the same protections. A charger or cooler is not a substitute for those protections.

Do iPhone or Pixel power-saving modes help while gaming?
iPhone: Low Power Mode and Adaptive Power
Apple says Low Power Mode reduces power use by changing or pausing some features. On ProMotion iPhones, it limits the display refresh rate to 60 frames per second, which may affect perceived smoothness in games. Adaptive Power is intended to adjust power use on higher-drain days, but Apple says it does not manage performance during maximum-performance activities such as games with Game Mode enabled. Check Apple’s current support guidance for eligibility and settings on your particular iPhone.
Pixel: Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery
Pixel Battery Saver can help stretch remaining charge, but Google’s advice for a nearly empty battery includes avoiding graphics-heavy and highly interactive games. Adaptive Battery focuses on app usage and background activity; it is not a way to eliminate the power demands of a game while you are actively playing. Pixel settings and availability vary by model and Android release.

Is a phone cooler worth using?
A clip-on smartphone gaming cooler is optional, not a basic requirement. ASUS markets its AeroActive Cooler 7 for gaming and claims it can help preserve battery life, but that is a manufacturer claim; no independent measurement of additional gaming time is established here. Check compatibility and power requirements before buying. Free measures—lowering brightness and game workload, improving ventilation, and taking breaks if the phone gets hot—are the sensible first steps.
What should you do when the battery is already low?
Prioritize the changes with the least impact on the game you need to play: dim the screen to a usable level, stop unneeded background tasks and connections, and lower graphics or frame rate if the game permits. If charge is critically low, Google’s Pixel guidance specifically recommends avoiding graphics-heavy and highly interactive games. A power bank can restore charge during a session, but it does not increase runtime per charge, and gaming while charging can add heat.
