To get better battery life with 120 Hz on, switch to a lower fixed refresh rate when smooth motion matters less, or enable an adaptive/dynamic mode if your device supports it. A higher fixed refresh rate can use more power, but official support guidance does not establish a reliable number of extra minutes or hours you will gain by changing it.
Why refresh rate affects battery life
Refresh rate is how often a display updates its image each second. A higher rate can make scrolling and motion look smoother, but it can also use more power. Microsoft lists lowering refresh rate as a Windows battery-saving adjustment, and Samsung says its fixed High mode uses more battery than Standard mode.

There is no universal runtime estimate for switching from 120 Hz to 60 Hz: the official guidance cited here describes the direction of the effect, not a generalizable battery-life figure. Your results depend on the device and how you use it.
Choose between lower, fixed-high, and adaptive refresh

If smoothness is important only for certain tasks, use a lower fixed rate for routine work and switch back when you want the higher rate. If an adaptive option is available and behaves well with your apps, it can make that adjustment automatically.

Lower the refresh rate in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Choose a lower refresh rate from the list for the display. The available choices depend on the display and device.
- Use the computer on battery and check whether the change suits your needs. Switch back to a higher rate if motion looks less smooth than you want.

Enable Dynamic Refresh Rate on supported Windows 11 devices
In Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, look for Dynamic Refresh Rate and enable it if the option is offered. Microsoft says DRR requires a variable-refresh-rate display that supports at least 120 Hz. It is not available in Windows 10.

DRR is intended to keep motion smooth when needed and reduce refresh rate for less demanding activity. If a game’s refresh behavior is affected, Microsoft advises turning DRR off as a mitigation. Its Dynamic refresh rate overview describes the feature and its use for everyday productivity tasks.

- Open Settings and search for Motion smoothness.
- Choose Standard to prioritize battery life, or select High or Adaptive if you prefer smoother motion.
Samsung describes Standard as 60 Hz. High locks some supported models to 120 Hz and others to 90 Hz; Adaptive adjusts dynamically up to the device’s supported maximum. Available modes and their interaction with screen resolution differ by model. Samsung also says Power saving mode sets the display to Standard. Check Samsung’s Motion smoothness instructions for model-specific details.

If the refresh-rate setting is missing
- Check the device maker’s display and power settings or its support instructions. Not every display, model, operating system, or configuration offers the same modes.
- On Windows, confirm which rates are listed under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. The available options depend on the display and system support.
- On Samsung devices, search Settings for Motion smoothness; Samsung notes that availability and resolution interactions vary by model.
- On some MSI notebooks, a feature called Display Power Saver reduces refresh rate when the AC adapter is disconnected. MSI says availability depends on the notebook and supported high-refresh panel; see its Display Power Saver guidance. MSI also documents refresh-rate and battery-runtime settings in its laptop battery-runtime guidance.
If your device does not offer a lower rate or an adaptive mode, there may be no refresh-rate control to change. Do not assume another model’s menu or feature applies to yours.
