Then reduce screen and background activity with changes that suit your phone. For longer-term battery health, keep the phone cool and use charging optimization if your model supports it.
How do I make my Pixel battery last longer today?
Check what is using power before changing settings. In Settings > Battery > Battery usage, review the apps and system activity shown for the relevant period. If a particular app is using more battery than expected, open its details and review its background activity settings. Menu labels can vary by Pixel model and Android version; search for the setting in the Settings app if the path differs.

Reduce screen drain
- Lower screen brightness, or turn on Adaptive brightness if you want the phone to adjust it automatically.
- Shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when you stop using the phone.
- Consider turning off Always-on Display or Smooth Display if you can accept the corresponding change in how the screen behaves.
Google lists these as ways to reduce battery use, but does not give a universal estimate of how much runtime any one change will add. The effect depends on your phone and how you use it.
Limit avoidable background use
Turn off hotspot or tethering when you are not sharing the connection. Keep Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled: Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use less often and limits their background activity. After setting up a Pixel or factory-resetting it, allow a few weeks for battery optimization to take full effect. Google explains Adaptive Battery and app optimization.

Use Battery Saver when the tradeoff is worthwhile
Battery Saver can help stretch the remaining charge, but it is not a free performance boost: Google warns that it may reduce performance and delay notifications. Turn it on when extra runtime matters more than prompt background activity, then turn it off when you no longer need it. How can I keep a Pixel battery healthier over time?
Charging features mainly help manage battery wear; they do not maximize the charge available for a particular day. Google offers Adaptive Charging and, on supported Pixel devices, an 80% charge limit.

Choose a charging setting for your routine
| Option | What it does | Best fit |

| Adaptive Charging | Learns charging habits and delays reaching a full charge until near the expected unplug time. | You want a full charge when you need the phone, without leaving it fully charged for an unnecessarily long period. |
| 80% limit | Stops charging at 80% on supported devices, reducing the charge available on that day. | You usually finish the day with charge remaining and prioritize battery health over maximum daily runtime. |
If you need more same-day runtime, switch off the 80% cap so the phone can charge fully. Google says supported Pixel devices need a full charge every tenth cycle to keep capacity readings accurate, even when the limit is enabled. Availability and controls vary by model. Avoid excessive heat
Heat can make a phone drain faster even when idle and can damage the battery. Keep the Pixel cool, especially while charging; do not leave it charging longer than needed. Google’s advice is direct: “Your phone warms up when it’s plugged in, so don’t keep it charging more than needed.”

There is no need to drain a lithium-ion battery from full to empty to teach the phone its capacity. Google’s guidance does not recommend that kind of cycling.

A recent setup, reset, or software update can temporarily change battery use. After a new setup or factory reset, Adaptive Battery may take a few weeks to learn your habits. Google also says extra drain after a software update is normal for a few days. If the problem continues beyond those periods, check Battery usage for an app or system process that stands out.

Investigate persistent drain
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and identify the apps or systems using the most charge.
- For an app with unexpectedly high use, review its background activity and battery optimization settings.
- If you have a Pixel 6 or later, run Battery diagnostics. The tool is not available on every Pixel generation.
- If unusual drain persists or diagnostics suggest a hardware issue, contact Google support or an authorized repair service. A battery icon with a question mark is also a reason to seek inspection or support.
