To make a 5G tablet last longer, start by lowering screen brightness and shortening screen timeout, then check battery usage for apps consuming power in the background. Battery Saver, turning off unused connections, and—on supported models—choosing a lower refresh rate can help, with trade-offs. Switching off 5G is not a guaranteed fix: results depend on the tablet, signal and network conditions.
Start with the screen
The display is a practical first place to save power because brightness and time with the screen on both matter. Set brightness to the lowest comfortable level, choose a shorter screen timeout, and turn the display off when you are not using the tablet. Long video sessions and graphics-heavy games also keep the screen and other components active. Google recommends reducing brightness and screen-on activity in its Android battery guidance and Pixel Tablet battery guidance.

- Dark theme: Try it if you prefer it; Android and Pixel Tablet guidance lists it as a battery-saving option, but it does not guarantee a particular runtime improvement.
- Refresh rate: If your tablet provides a refresh-rate setting, a lower rate may suit reading or other tasks that do not need especially smooth motion. Xiaomi recommends 60 Hz for its Pad Mini, noting that its default high refresh rate can increase battery use. This is model-specific advice, not a universal setting or measured gain. Reducing brightness can make the display harder to see, while a shorter timeout means the screen may turn off sooner than you want. Adjust those settings around how you use the tablet.
Find out what is using the battery
Before restricting apps, look at recent battery use. Open Settings and find Battery, Battery usage or a similarly named page; labels vary by device. Check whether an app is using an unusual amount of power in the background, then restrict that app if you can tolerate the effect on its functions. Google’s Pixel Tablet instructions recommend restricting apps with high background battery use, and Samsung describes reviewing recent battery usage in its Galaxy tablet power-saving guide.

Battery Saver can reduce background activity, but it may also delay notifications, syncing, app refresh or network connections. Adaptive Battery can optimize app use, but Google notes that on Pixel Tablet it may reduce performance or delay notifications. If an important alert or service stops working as expected, turn the feature off or adjust the affected app’s restrictions. Google summarizes Pixel Tablet Battery Saver this way: “Battery saver turns on the Dark theme and limits background activity to save battery life.”
Turn off connections and services you are not using
Disable hotspot or tethering when nobody needs the tablet’s connection. Turn off Bluetooth, location services or Wi-Fi connectivity and scanning when they are unnecessary for what you are doing. The exact controls differ: HMD’s T21 guidance recommends selective use of location, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, while TCL’s TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER guidance advises turning off Bluetooth and location when not needed.

If you do not need mobile connectivity, use the available mobile-network control or Airplane mode. Airplane mode removes cellular service, so do not use it when you need calls, messages or mobile data. Google includes it as an option when mobile network connectivity is unnecessary in its Android battery guidance.

Will turning off 5G improve battery life?
It may help on some devices and network configurations, but there is no basis for promising that it will improve battery life on every 5G tablet. Samsung says some Galaxy phones may drain faster on 5G in a configuration where the phone maintains connections to multiple networks. That is phone-specific guidance, not a controlled comparison across tablets. See Samsung’s 5G battery support page.

First check whether your tablet and carrier offer a preferred-network setting that lets you select 4G or LTE. Some devices do not expose a 4G-only choice, and menu labels vary. If you can compare 5G with LTE, use the tablet for similar tasks over similar periods and in similar reception conditions. Signal strength, network setup and the tablet’s implementation can all affect the outcome; a comparison in different conditions will not tell you much about the setting alone. Consult the manufacturer or carrier instructions for your model before changing network settings.
Check for unusual drain and protect the battery from heat
If the battery suddenly drains much faster than usual, review the battery-usage screen for an app or service consuming more power than expected. Use the manufacturer’s support route for the exact model if the cause is unclear. A generic runtime estimate cannot establish that a battery is defective; the cited guidance does not provide a universal battery-health diagnosis or standard runtime target for all 5G tablets.

Avoid excessive heat, but use the temperature advice for your own model rather than applying one manufacturer’s limit to every tablet. For example, TCL lists 0–35°C as the optimal temperature range for the TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER; that figure is specific to that model. See TCL’s support guidance.

A compatible USB-C power bank can add charge while you are away from a wall outlet. It does not make the tablet’s internal battery more efficient. Check the tablet’s supported charging input and the power bank’s output and cable for compatibility before buying.

Some power requirements are tied to a particular feature, not a general charging rule. Samsung specifies a dedicated USB-C power source rated at 9V/2.3A or above and USB PD 2.0 or above for No Battery Mode on the Galaxy Tab Active5 5G. Those requirements apply to that mode and model; they are not universal power-bank specifications. Samsung also says additional replacement batteries for that model must be Samsung-certified. Do not assume your tablet has a user-replaceable battery: check the instructions for its exact model.

Find the right settings for your model
Battery menus and available controls can vary with tablet model, software version and carrier. Samsung explicitly cautions that “Available screens and settings may vary by wireless service provider, software version, and model” in its Galaxy tablet power-saving guide (last updated 18 May 2023). If a setting described here is missing, check your tablet maker’s instructions rather than assuming your device supports it.
