Check the game’s live Steam store page: “Coming Soon” means it is not yet available to buy or play, “Early Access” means you can play its in-development version now, and a fully released game has launched through Steam’s full-release process. The label “Coming Soon” does not reveal when the game will launch.
What each Steam release label means
| What the Steam page says | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Coming Soon | The public store listing is upcoming; customers cannot purchase or play the game in this state. The developer may choose not to show a release date. | Wishlist it if you want to follow it, then check the live page or developer announcements for updates. Steamworks’ Coming Soon guidance |
| Coming Soon to Early Access | The game is not available yet, and its first planned Steam release is intended to be Early Access. | Treat it as unreleased until the page offers access. When it launches, assess the Early Access build as it exists then. Steam’s Game Store Simulator listing |
| Early Access | The game is playable now, but remains in development and may change through updates. | Review current gameplay, features, and recent developer updates before buying. Steam’s Early Access guide |
| Fully released | The developer has used Steam’s full-release process; the product is made immediately playable and shown as fully released. | Check the live page for the available edition, access details, and system requirements. Steamworks’ Release Options |
How to check a specific game
- Open the game’s current Steam store page. Its availability and release-date area are the most direct indicators of its current store status.
- Read the exact label and any purchase or play option. “Coming Soon” means there is no purchase or play option at that stage; Early Access means the current game is available to play. Steamworks’ Release Options
- If the page says Early Access, open its recent developer announcements and review the current screenshots, videos, and description to understand what is included now. Steam’s Early Access guide
Does “Coming Soon” mean the game releases soon?
No. Steam lets developers display an exact date, a month and year, a quarter, a year, or no date. When no player-facing date is displayed, the page can say “Coming Soon”; the label does not disclose a hidden countdown or let players infer an exact launch date. A Coming Soon page is a pre-release listing: Steam says it makes the store page and community hub visible and allows wishlisting, but customers cannot buy or play the game in that state. Steamworks also requires a new product’s Coming Soon page to be live for at least two weeks before release. That is a minimum storefront requirement, not a promise that any particular game will launch in two weeks. Steamworks’ Coming Soon guidance
Early Access is playable, but still in development
Early Access is not a preorder for an unavailable game. Steam describes it as a purchase that gives immediate access to the game in its current form, with the game able to evolve over time. What is playable, how often it is updated, and how much it may change depend on the particular title. Steam’s Early Access guide

Steam advises buying only if you are interested in playing the game as it is now. A developer’s plan or estimate is not a guaranteed completion date: the developer decides when it is ready for full release, and Steam cautions that some teams may be unable to finish their games. - Current gameplay: Look at recent screenshots and videos, then compare them with the game’s description of what is playable now.
- Recent updates: Read developer announcements on the store page to see how often the game is updated and whether the changes are useful to you.
- Your own expectations: Decide whether the present version appeals to you without relying on promised features or a projected full-release timeline. Steam recommends waiting for a later update if the current version does not interest you.
Because release status can change, use the game’s live Steam page rather than an old article or a date inferred from its label.
