For your own use or a small trusted team, keep the inference API private and provide authenticated VPN or identity-aware access. For external clients, expose only a reverse proxy or API gateway—not the inference server itself—and require authentication, authorization, encrypted connections, traffic limits, and monitoring. These options can be layered: private networking controls who can reach a service, while a proxy or gateway controls HTTP/API traffic and identity.
Which option fits your audience?
| Pattern | Best fit | Main benefit | Trade-off or condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN or identity-aware private access | Owner-only, team-only, or controlled machine access | Keeps the API off general public reachability and limits who can route to it. | Network membership does not replace user or workload authentication and authorization. [NIST SP 800-207; OWASP Authentication Cheat Sheet] |
| Reverse proxy | A small public web/API surface or a self-managed deployment | Provides a controlled HTTP entry point for TLS, authentication, and traffic policy. | A proxy does not secure an unauthenticated or vulnerable backend by itself. Prevent direct access to the origin and secure the proxy-to-backend connection. [NVIDIA Secure Deployment Guidelines; OWASP Authentication Cheat Sheet] |
| Public API gateway | External clients, multiple consumers, or production APIs needing centralized controls | Can centralize authentication, authorization, throttling, request limits, API inventory, and related protections. | Requires operational effort and policy management; it does not replace service authorization, backend isolation, patching, or monitoring. [NIST SP 800-228; NVIDIA Secure Deployment Guidelines] |
The choice is not always one of three mutually exclusive products. A private access layer can keep a service off the public internet, while an HTTP proxy or gateway applies API-specific controls. A small deployment may use fewer components; choose a topology your team can configure, operate, and monitor reliably.

What must be protected, regardless of the entry point?
Authenticate and authorize callers
Require an appropriate identity check for each user or workload, even when it connects over a VPN or private network. Grant only the operations and models that identity needs. OWASP notes that network-layer authentication complements other controls; it authenticates nodes, not necessarily the users or workloads behind them. OWASP’s authentication guidance explains the distinction.

Secure both network hops
Use TLS between client and proxy or gateway. That protects only the client-to-edge segment. If the connection from the edge to the inference frontend crosses an untrusted segment, encrypt it too; mutual TLS (mTLS) can also authenticate the gateway and backend to one another where appropriate. NVIDIA’s Dynamo-specific Secure Deployment Guidelines make this trust boundary explicit.

Limit traffic and resource use
Set request-size, rate, and concurrency limits, and account for the compute cost of inference requests. Choose limits for the model and expected workload rather than copying generic values. Monitor usage and availability so that abusive traffic or unexpected demand can be detected. NIST’s API protection guidance covers controls such as authentication, rate limiting, inventory, and data analysis.
Keep internal services private
Restrict reachability to the inference frontend, workers, dashboards, service discovery, message brokers, event and request services, and infrastructure management interfaces. External callers should not be able to bypass the edge and connect directly to the origin. NVIDIA’s Dynamo guide says, “Do not expose the Dynamo frontend directly to an untrusted network,” and describes the gateway as the external clients’ only entry point into the cluster. That is product-specific guidance, but the boundary is useful for other serving architectures too.

Patch and monitor the serving stack
Maintain an inventory of exposed endpoints, the serving framework, dependencies, and model-serving components. Apply vendor security updates and monitor access. For image, audio, or video inference paths, scrutinize input handling and validation; confirm any framework-specific vulnerability or remediation against the framework’s own current advisories rather than relying on a general AI security note.

Recommended setup for personal or small-team access
- Bind the API privately. Put the inference service on a private interface or network, not a public listener.
- Provide controlled access. Route users or machines through a VPN or identity-aware private-access service, then require API authentication and authorization as well.
- Keep adjacent services off the public interface. Restrict dashboards, workers, coordination services, and management ports to trusted network segments.
- Operate the boundary. Patch the serving stack, monitor requests, and limit resource consumption.
For example, Cloudflare documents private application access for private IPs or hostnames using identity-provider authentication, deny-by-default policies, optional MFA, and token/session handling. Its documentation says a public IP or hostname can be used for a private application only when routed through Cloudflare Tunnel, Mesh, or WAN. This is an implementation example, not a requirement to use that service: Cloudflare’s self-hosted application documentation.

Recommended setup for public clients
- Expose only the edge. Publish the reverse proxy or API gateway, not the inference process or internal components.
- Authenticate and authorize at the edge. Validate client identity and permissions; do not forward credentials to services that are not their intended recipients.
- Encrypt the complete path. Use TLS from client to edge, then protect the edge-to-inference hop if it crosses an untrusted segment. Consider mTLS for gateway-to-backend identity.
- Apply limits and observe usage. Bound request size, rate, concurrency, and compute consumption. Monitor abuse and service availability.
- Block bypass routes. Configure network rules so clients cannot reach the inference origin directly; keep workers and coordination services on trusted segments.
- Maintain the exposed surface. Track endpoints and dependencies, patch the serving stack, and check current vendor advisories for the specific components you run.
When a gateway pattern becomes more complex
NIST SP 800-228 describes centralized, distributed, and other gateway patterns as ways to implement API protections, each with operational and architectural trade-offs. It says distributed gateways and companion technologies align most closely with zero-trust principles and strongly recommends them for organizations taking a security-forward approach. That is not a reason for every small deployment to adopt a distributed design: the right pattern depends on the number of services, trust boundaries, and the team’s ability to operate it. NIST recommends applying zero-trust assumptions to APIs whether they are external-facing or intended for internal applications: NIST SP 800-228.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Publishing the inference port directly: put a controlled edge in front of it instead.
- Treating VPN access as proof of authorization: authenticate and authorize the user or workload at the API layer too.
- Assuming edge TLS covers the backend: protect the second network hop when it crosses an untrusted segment.
- Leaving the origin reachable around the proxy: restrict backend network access so the proxy or gateway is the only external route.
- Setting no resource bounds: inference requests can consume substantial compute, so establish limits and monitor usage.
- Trusting internal location alone: apply identity and access controls even to APIs intended for internal applications.
