After exporting, inspect the result in the application where it will be used—spacing, fonts, and rendering support can change how the art looks.
Choose a format for the destination
| What you need | Practical format | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Editable characters, terminal use, or code | TXT or copied text | Spaces, line breaks, monospace display, and wrapping |
| Browser display as text | HTML with a <pre> element |
Styles and available width preserve alignment |
| A browser-openable, self-contained file | HTML with inline SVG | Whether artwork and other assets are embedded and the file works offline |
| General image placement | PNG | Background, dimensions, and readability at the intended size |
| Artwork that needs to scale cleanly | SVG | Whether fonts and styles remain portable in the receiving application |
These are format-selection guidelines, not a promise that every exporter handles every kind of ASCII or Unicode art identically. Browser-rendered text, Unicode box-drawing characters, and colored characters can depend on font support and the exporter.

Export as plain text
- In the source tool, choose Copy or its text/TXT download option. For example, Auric Artisan documents a “Download TXT” option in its ASCII Art Generator User Guide.
- If you copy the art, paste it into a code block, terminal, or other monospace area. If you save it, use a plain-text editor and retain the line breaks and leading spaces.
- Check the saved or pasted result at the width where it will be used. Proportional fonts, automatic line wrapping, or trimmed whitespace can visibly distort alignment.
Export as HTML
Display the characters as text
Put the artwork inside an HTML <pre> element. This element preserves preformatted text layout, including spaces and line breaks; RFC 7992 describes text artwork rendered this way. You can apply CSS for font family, size, color, background, and overflow. The ascii-magic documentation also describes saving styled HTML with art in a <pre> element.

Check that CSS does not wrap or clip the artwork and that the selected font contains the characters it uses.
#1 Best Overall
Package a rendered version in a self-contained file
If the artwork is already rendered as a graphic, an exporter may put inline SVG into a single HTML file. MermaidExport’s ASCII Art to HTML guide documents a one-file download with inline SVG, no external runtime or CDN dependency, and offline browser use. This is a different approach from keeping the original characters as editable text: inspect the resulting file to see what it contains before relying on it for further editing.

- Choose the tool’s PNG or SVG export option. Export features and rendering behavior vary by application; for example, Auric Artisan documents TXT, PNG, SVG, HTML, JSON, and CSV exports, alongside Text, HTML, Canvas, and SVG rendering modes in its user guide.
- Preview the downloaded file at the intended display or print size and against the intended background.
- Open it in the receiving application and check that the art, fonts, colors, and styling appear as expected.
PNG is raster output suited to common document and post placements. SVG is vector output and can stay crisp when scaled; the ZTools rendering guide describes PNG and SVG downloads, and Auric Artisan’s guide describes Canvas-mode PNG and SVG-mode scalable graphics. A format label alone does not guarantee that every character or style will render as intended.

Check the exported file before sharing
- For text, confirm leading spaces and newlines survived, and view it in a monospace font.
- For HTML text, test the page at the destination width and look for wrapping or clipping.
- For inline-SVG HTML, verify the artwork appears in a browser and that any required assets are included.
- For PNG or SVG, inspect readability at the size and background where the image will appear.
- If the art uses Unicode box drawing, color characters, or unusual glyphs, check font support in the target application.
