Export your conversations from the old chatbot before cancelling, deleting, or losing access to its account. Download and check the archive, keep a secure copy, then confirm what the new service actually does with an import: Gemini can import eligible ChatGPT and Claude history as chats, while ChatGPT’s documented JSON upload is reference material—not a restoration of your old chat list.
What “switching” your chat history really means
An export gives you a copy of data from the old account. It does not necessarily move your account or rebuild your conversation list elsewhere. Among the documented options covered here, Gemini Apps supports importing full chat history from ChatGPT and Claude for eligible personal Google accounts. ChatGPT can use an exported conversation file as a reference in a new chat, but does not recreate the old conversations as separate sidebar entries. Claude’s personal-account export cannot be imported into another personal Claude account.

These workflows concern conversation data, not a complete account migration. ChatGPT’s reference-file method does not transfer subscriptions, settings, memories, GPTs, files, workspace access, custom instructions, or membership.
Save the archive before access changes
- Request the official export while you can still sign in. If the account belongs to a managed workspace, check with its owner or administrator about permissions and timing. OpenAI specifically advises exporting and checking data before a personal workspace is removed during a move to a managed workspace.
- Watch for the download notice. ChatGPT exports can take up to seven days to arrive, according to OpenAI’s help article accessed in 2026. Claude sends a download link by email after processing. For both services, the documented download link expires 24 hours after delivery.
- Download promptly and inspect the archive. Open it and check that the conversations you need are present. OpenAI says its ZIP includes chat history and other account data, and advises verifying the needed conversations. An export cannot restore conversations that were already deleted.
- Keep a second copy somewhere you control. For example, you can store a copy on a personal external drive. That is an optional storage choice, not a platform requirement or a guarantee of security. Avoid leaving the archive on a shared or publicly accessible device.
- Choose what, if anything, to upload. A full archive may contain more personal material than you intend to move. Consider whether selected conversations are enough, and read the destination’s data-handling information before uploading sensitive chats.
- Keep the original archive until you verify the result. Allow the destination to process the upload, then inspect the imported chats or reference conversation before relying on it as your only copy.
OpenAI warns: “Downloaded data can include sensitive account information. Keep your download link and exported files secure.” OpenAI’s export instructions also say the download link should be opened while signed into the same account that requested it. If the link expires, request a fresh export rather than relying on the old one. If a ChatGPT export has not arrived after seven days, check spam or promotions folders and SMS as applicable, then contact support.

Export from ChatGPT
For an eligible signed-in account, use this path in ChatGPT:
- Open the profile menu.
- Select Settings > Data controls > Export data.
- Select Export, then Confirm export.
You can also use the OpenAI Privacy Portal: choose Make a Privacy Request > I have a consumer ChatGPT account > Download my data. OpenAI may ask you to verify account ownership, so make sure you can access the account’s email address or phone number.

The Settings export is listed for Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and eligible Edu workspaces. It is unavailable while logged out and unavailable for Business, Enterprise, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. Edu availability depends on role, workspace settings, and data residency; ask the workspace administrator if you are unsure.

Export from Claude
Individual Claude Free, Pro, and Max users can request a conversation and account-data export from Settings > Privacy > Export data in the web app or Claude Desktop. The iOS and Android apps cannot initiate an export. Anthropic’s help article dated July 8, 2026, says the download link is emailed to the account address, requires the user to be signed in to download, and expires 24 hours after delivery.
For Team and Enterprise organizations, exports are restricted to the Primary Owner and follow organization-specific instructions. Claude’s documented personal-account export cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. Anthropic separately describes a process for moving a personal account into a Team or Enterprise organization; that is different from personal-account-to-personal-account history import.

Import a full history into Gemini
Google’s documented path is Gemini Apps > Settings & help > Import memory to Gemini > Import chats > Add. Select the ZIP archive you downloaded from ChatGPT or Claude. Google’s instructions also explain how to request those source exports: ChatGPT’s Settings > Data controls > Export > Confirm Export flow, or Claude’s Settings > Privacy > Export data flow.
Google’s stated limits and eligibility are listed in the comparison above. If an import is interrupted, some chats may be partial; Google says it will notify you. You can delete that import entry and retry. You can also delete individual imported chats or an entire import. Uploading the same ZIP again adds new chats and overwrites chats imported previously.

Use a ChatGPT export as reference material
To make exported ChatGPT conversations available as context in another ChatGPT chat, extract conversations.json from the ZIP. Large exports may contain numbered conversation JSON files instead. Start a new conversation in the personal ChatGPT account where you want to keep the reference, then upload the JSON file.
The new chat can use the uploaded file as reference, but this does not restore the old conversations as separate chats or bring back the original sidebar. If the file is too large, OpenAI suggests uploading numbered files separately, splitting the JSON, or selecting only the conversations you need. Keep the original export independently; a reference upload is not a substitute for retaining your own archive.
Protect the export and verify the switch
- Use a private device and storage location, and restrict access to the archive.
- Before uploading, decide whether the destination needs the full archive or only selected conversations.
- Read the destination’s data-handling notice. In particular, Google says Gemini-imported and continued chats are saved in Activity and used to improve its services, including training generative AI models.
- After upload, inspect the result for missing or partial chats before depending on it.
- Keep the original ZIP until you have confirmed that the destination contains what you expected.
