On a computer, open the document in Google Docs and choose File > Download > Markdown (.md). Google downloads a Markdown file you can open in a compatible editor or app. For automated exports, use the Google Drive API with the Markdown MIME type text/markdown.
Download a Google Doc as a Markdown file
- Open the Google Doc on a computer.
- Select File in the menu bar, then choose Download.
- Select Markdown (.md).
- Open or import the downloaded
.mdfile in your destination application.
This is a built-in Google Docs export option, not a separate conversion service. Google documents the steps in its Markdown help page.
Copy selected content instead of downloading the document
If you only need part of a document, select the content, right-click it, and choose Copy as Markdown. This places Markdown text on your clipboard; it is different from downloading the full document as an .md file. Google also documents a Markdown preference under Tools > Preferences > Enable Markdown for Markdown-related copy and paste support. That preference is not a prerequisite for the File > Download export.
Automate export with the Google Drive API
For a script or application, use the Drive API files.export method with the Google Doc’s file ID and the requested MIME type text/markdown. Google’s export format table maps that MIME type to the .md extension. See the Google Workspace export MIME types and Drive API download and export guide.

Google documents a 10 MB limit for exported content through the API. The documented limit is specific to API export; do not assume it describes every download through the Docs interface. The files.export method reference provides the method details and limit.

What to check if Markdown export is unavailable or incomplete
- The download option is missing: Markdown import and export were announced as available by default for Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google accounts. Google’s July 16, 2024 announcement described rollout starting July 16 for Rapid Release domains and July 31 for Scheduled Release domains, with rollout taking up to 15 days; those are historical rollout dates, not an indication that rollout is still underway. - A work or school account cannot download: Some account data may be restricted by an organization, and Google Drive Help notes that export-size limits can also cause failures. Check with your administrator if account restrictions may apply, and review Google’s export and download help.
- Formatting or embedded content matters: Google’s documentation confirms the Markdown export option but does not provide an exhaustive map of how every Docs element is represented. Inspect the resulting file in the destination app, especially if the document uses complex formatting or embedded objects; do not assume every detail will be preserved identically.
