To keep a floor-plan DXF useful, agree on units, coordinate basis, layer names, room-boundary geometry, and linked-file handling before export—then open the result in the recipient’s CAD application and verify it there. DXF can carry structured drawing data, but it should not be treated as a standard container for a complete BIM model.
What a DXF export can—and cannot—preserve
DXF is more than a picture of a plan. Its structure can include headers, tables such as layers, blocks, graphical entities, objects, and extended data. Autodesk’s DXF Reference documents these drawing structures.

That structure does not mean every feature in a source model will remain as an intelligent, editable model object. The Library of Congress describes DXF’s sections and notes interoperability and conversion concerns; it found no evidence that BIM data can be incorporated in DXF in a standard way. Treat the export as drawing-level data unless the receiving workflow confirms that it supports more.
What to agree with the recipient before exporting
- DXF version: Ask which version the recipient’s application accepts.
- Units: Confirm whether dimensions should be interpreted in inches, millimeters, or another unit.
- Coordinate basis: Decide whether the plan should use the project’s internal coordinates or align to shared coordinates.
- Layer convention: Agree on layer names and the standard or custom mapping to use.
- Room information: Clarify whether closed room or area boundaries, and their attributes, need to be usable after export.
- Linked content: Decide whether linked files should travel as separate external references or be combined into one file.
Set units and coordinates deliberately in Revit
Revit’s documented DWG/DXF export setup allows you to choose a drawing unit. In the Revit 2022 documentation, inches are the default for imperial projects and millimeters for metric projects; confirm the intended unit rather than relying on that default. See Autodesk’s Units and Coordinates for DWG/DXF Exports.
#1 Best Overall
- 12" triangular architect scale designed to facilitate the drafting and measuring of architectural drawings, such as floor plans, blue Prints, and orthographic projections
- Triangular ruler features 3 sides with 6 different scales, and made from high Impact aluminum, build to last
- Laser etched scales never fading. Architect ruler with enduring laser cut imperial prints for accuracy. They will not wipe or scratch off ever
- Professional grade for accuracy color coded triangular scale for easy and quick selection of the desired scale
- Standard imperial measurements: 1-1/2, 1, 3/4, 3/8, 3/16, 3/32, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 3, 16
Choose the coordinate basis to match how the recipient will use the file. Internal coordinates are appropriate when the plan is being handled as a standalone drawing and its position relative to other project files is immaterial. Shared coordinates are relevant when the export must align with the project’s shared position. Autodesk specifies that, for shared coordinates in a DWG export, you must select views rather than sheets. Confirm the selected export content accordingly.
Map categories to layers the recipient understands
Revit’s export layer mapping translates model categories and subcategories into layer names and colors. Autodesk’s interoperability guide lists AIA, BS1192, ISO 13567, and CP 83 standards, and allows custom standards. The best choice is the convention agreed with the recipient, not simply the one that happens to be selected in the project.

- [PREMIUM QUALITY] This architect scale ruler for blueprints is made of anodized aluminum alloy, very solid and sturdy. Designed for maximum durability, this 3 sided metal architect ruler is perfect for lasting use
- [PRECISE IMPERIAL SCALE] The aluminum triangle ruler is professional grade with supreme accuracy. With reliable construction and accurate performance, the black construction ruler is ideal for architects, engineers, draftsmen and students
- [TRIPLE SIDED DESIGN] The classic architect's triple-sided scale included: 1-1/2", 1, 3/4", 3/8", 3/16", 3/32", 1/2", 1/4", 1/8", 3, 16, very convenient and useful for professional use
- [LASER ETCHED TECHNOLOGY] All numbers and measurement markings on drafting scale rulers are laser etched for maximum clarity and readability. Laser etched technology effectively prevents scale numbers and markings from wearing off or fading away
- [GREAT GIFT FOR ENGINEERS] The architectural scale ruler is great as a gift for engineers that will help them a lot in their work
Before delivery, inspect the exported layer names and visibility in the target application. A layer mapping that looks orderly in the source configuration may still be unsuitable if the recipient’s workflow expects different names or categories.

Revit can export room and area boundaries as closed polylines. Room-boundary polylines can carry XDATA fields for Name, Number, Occupancy, Occupant, Department, and Comments. These options are described in Autodesk’s General Options for DWG/DXF Export.

- Precision and Accuracy: 12" Triangular Architect's ruler features 3 sides with 6 different scales, You will calculate dimension and perspective for plans and other blueprints without struggling with the guesswork.
- Mterial: Made from high grade anodized aluminum, reliable and skillfully crafted for your most project needs, it’s a workhorse on the drafting table.
- Laser Etched: Architect ruler for laser etched, They will not wipe or scratch off ever.
- Widely Application: Good for technical artist, architect, engineer, plan drawer, hobbyist, modeller, draughtsman, graphic designer, student.
- Portability: Compact and lightweight, ideal for on-the-go use.
Room boundaries are on a layer that is off by default, so a boundary may be present but not visible until its layer is enabled. If room geometry or attributes matter to the handoff, check that the boundaries are exported, closed, visible, and carrying the expected data in the recipient’s application.
Make content and linked-file choices explicit
Export settings can affect coincident lines, selected reference content, and how links are handled. Review the settings against what the receiver actually needs; unnecessary or hidden content can complicate the drawing, while omitted references can leave it incomplete.

- FOR OFFICE, SCHOOL & JOBSITE: A practical drafting tool for architecture, engineering, construction, interior design, drafting classes and blueprint reading.
For linked files, decide whether the recipient needs external references or a consolidated drawing. Separate references require the referenced files to accompany the export and remain available at the expected paths. Autodesk’s CAD and BIM Interoperability Guide recommends using AutoCAD’s external-reference (xref) functionality with exported Revit views in a multi-platform workflow. The guide advises: “Rather than drafting directly in DWG or DXF files exported from Revit, you should use the AutoCAD external reference (xref) functionality.”
Preflight the export and verify the delivered file
- Confirm the handoff specification. Record the recipient’s DXF version, units, coordinate basis, layer convention, required views, and linked-file preference.
- Configure the export. In Revit, set units and coordinate basis intentionally, select the required views or sheets, and review layer mapping, visibility, room and area boundary options, coincident-line handling, and link behavior. For shared coordinates in a DWG export, select views rather than sheets.
- Open the output in the target application. Check representative dimensions and alignment; inspect layer names and visibility; confirm room boundaries are closed and any required attributes are present; review annotation and linked dependencies.
- Keep a record with the delivery. Retain the source model and note the software version and export choices so future users can distinguish an export limitation from a drawing defect.
This check matters because DXF versions and conversion paths can affect interoperability. A file that opens is not necessarily a file whose scale, coordinates, room data, and dependencies are correct.
