How to Add Bluetooth to an Old Stereo: Inputs, Adapters and Setup

Connect a Bluetooth receiver to a compatible line-level input on your old stereo, pair your phone, then select that input. Avoid PHONO and verify the required cable and power in both manuals.

To play phone audio through an old stereo, connect a Bluetooth audio receiver to a compatible line-level input, pair your phone with the receiver, and select that input on the stereo. The receiver takes audio from the phone; the stereo still handles source selection and volume and drives its existing speakers. Choose a receiver—not a transmitter-only adapter—for this direction of playback.

What you need to connect a phone to an old stereo

The usual signal path is: phone → Bluetooth receiver set to RX mode → stereo line input → amplifier → existing speakers. A Bluetooth receiver accepts wireless audio and sends it onward through an audio output. A transmitter does the reverse, sending sound from a stereo or TV to Bluetooth headphones or speakers.

Some adapters support both roles. If yours does, make sure it is in receiver mode. Somogyi’s BTRC 1000 manual, for example, describes receiving phone audio over Bluetooth and sending it to an amplifier or HiFi system through analog 3.5 mm or optical output; its USB-C power requirement is specific to that product, not a universal standard. Check the stereo’s inputs before buying an adapter

Find a suitable line-level input

Look for an available input marked AUX, CD, TAPE, or another label that the stereo’s manual identifies as suitable for an external audio source. Labels and functions vary, so do not assume every set of RCA jacks is an input. Cambridge Audio’s AXR85/100 manual, for example, identifies A1–A3 as line-level audio inputs. Keep Bluetooth audio out of PHONO

A PHONO input is designed for a turntable’s much lower-level signal and may include a built-in phono stage. A standard Bluetooth receiver outputs a line-level signal, so connecting it to PHONO is the wrong match and can cause distorted sound. Cambridge Audio’s AXR85/100 manual explicitly warns: “Do not connect a non-phono source to the phono input.” Follow the manual for your exact stereo rather than assuming its PHONO jack can serve as AUX.

Pause if the sockets are unfamiliar

If the system appears to have only a PHONO input, DIN sockets, or connections you cannot identify, find the stereo’s model number and consult its manual before purchasing anything. A system-specific converter or preamplifier might be needed, but there is no universal workaround established for every older component.

Match the Bluetooth receiver’s output to the stereo

Once you have identified a suitable stereo input, compare it with the Bluetooth receiver’s audio output. Common options include analog 3.5 mm, RCA through a compatible cable or adapter, and optical where both devices support it. The manuals for both devices determine which connections are appropriate; connector shape alone does not establish that a socket is the right input or output.

For RCA connections, keep the left and right channels aligned. Philips’ setup instructions specify red-to-red and white-to-white wiring. Its support material is useful for connection guidance, but the cited adapter is discontinued, so it should not be treated as a current product recommendation. • Multipoint Bluetooth connectivity: Simultaneously pair your smartphone and tablet and stream music from either one
  • Easy pairing and automatic re-pairing: Pair your device to the adapter once with a single button press and you're done
  • Long-range wireless: Stream music from up to 20 meters (66 feet) away from your speakers
  • Works with most speakers: Plugs into any powered PC speakers, home stereo systems and A/V receivers using RCA or 3.5 mm jacks

Do not connect a standard Bluetooth receiver to the stereo’s speaker terminals. The receiver’s audio output is intended for a compatible audio input, not for speaker-level connections.

Connect and pair the receiver

  1. Connect the audio cable. With the stereo and adapter off or muted, connect the receiver’s audio output to the stereo’s documented line-level input. Use the cable type supported by both devices.
  2. Power the receiver. Follow its manual for the required USB or other power supply. Power requirements differ by model.
  3. Select the stereo input. Turn on the stereo and choose the input where the receiver is connected. The control names and sequence depend on the stereo model.
  4. Pair the phone. Put the receiver into pairing mode, open the phone’s Bluetooth settings, and select the receiver as directed by its manual.
  5. Start playback quietly. Begin with the stereo volume low, start audio on the phone, and raise the volume gradually.

Bluetooth pairing and source selection are separate: the phone must connect to the Bluetooth receiver, and the stereo must be set to the receiver’s wired input. Cambridge Audio’s AXR85/100 guidance likewise treats correct source selection and pairing state as checks for sound; other models may use different controls.

Troubleshoot no sound, distortion, or connection problems

No audio

  • Check that the phone is paired with the Bluetooth receiver, not another nearby device.
  • Confirm the receiver is powered and that the stereo is set to the input used for the connection.
  • Check the cable at both ends and verify that the phone is sending audio to the receiver.

Distorted sound

Check whether the receiver is connected to PHONO instead of a line-level input. A phono stage is intended for a turntable-level signal, not a standard Bluetooth receiver’s line-level output.

One channel is missing or the stereo image is reversed

Check that the left and right plugs are connected to their matching channels. For the RCA convention shown in Philips’ instructions, red goes to red and white to white.

Hum or noise

Make sure plugs are fully seated and inspect the connection against the stereo’s manual. Cambridge Audio’s troubleshooting section discusses secure cable and ground or shield connections for its receiver; turntable grounding advice is model-specific and should not automatically be applied to every Bluetooth setup.

Pairing fails

Follow the adapter’s pairing instructions, confirm it is in receiver mode, and check that the phone is not already connected to another audio device. Pairing procedures differ among adapters, so use the manual for the specific model.

Check special requirements before choosing a receiver

  • Power: Confirm the receiver’s required supply and whether it suits your intended setup.
  • Video use: If you plan to watch video, check whether the manuals for both endpoints discuss audio delay or low-latency operation. A low-latency device may reduce sync effects in some setups, but the Somogyi manual’s advice is tied to its TV use case.
  • Codecs: Do not assume an advertised Bluetooth version or codec guarantees negotiation with your phone or an audible improvement. Compatibility depends on both endpoints, and the manufacturer material cited here does not establish a general codec recommendation.
  • Current product details: Check a candidate receiver’s current manual for its mode, outputs, power, and pairing steps; adapter features and availability can change.
