For most AI video workflows, render your Blender scene to a video file—or to a still image if the selected mode accepts image references. Export a 3D file such as FBX, GLB, USD, or Alembic only when the destination specifically supports 3D imports. An AI video service’s video upload is not the same thing as a Blender scene export.
Choose the right kind of export
Start by checking what the AI tool’s selected feature accepts. A rendered video carries the camera view as moving images; a still image can provide a visual reference or start frame in supported workflows. A 3D interchange file carries scene data for a destination that can import 3D assets. A native .blend file is Blender’s editable project, not evidence that an AI video service can open it.

| Your goal | Blender output | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Restyle or transform an animation or shot with video-to-video AI | Rendered video | Accepted container and codec, maximum duration and file size, resolution, and aspect ratio. |
| Guide a first frame or provide a visual reference | Rendered still image | The specific mode accepts uploaded reference or start-frame images, and the image meets its dimension and aspect-ratio rules. |
| Continue work in a 3D-aware renderer, game engine, or DCC application | USD, FBX, glTF, Alembic, or another supported interchange format | Which geometry, animation, camera, lighting, and material features that importer supports. |
| Keep the scene editable in Blender | .blend project |
The recipient explicitly supports Blender project files; do not assume an AI video tool does. |
For example, Luma Dream Machine’s documented Modify workflows describe uploaded video and, in some modes, still-image references. The reviewed pages do not document importing a .blend project or 3D interchange file directly. Check the current feature documentation for your chosen tool before preparing a file: accepted inputs and limits are product- and mode-specific.

- Set up the intended shot. In Blender, select the camera you want to render from and set the scene’s frame range to the portion you intend to submit. Check framing, motion, and any objects that should be visible in the final camera view.
- Choose output settings for the destination. In Output Properties, set the resolution and aspect ratio to fit the tool’s current requirements. Choose a frame rate and output quality appropriate to the shot and upload limit. The destination’s documentation—not a universal AI-video standard—determines the accepted video format and limits.
- Render the animation. Use Render > Render Animation to render the scene’s frame range. If you are rendering a single frame instead, use Render > Render Image. Blender’s output settings control where and how the rendered frames are saved.
- Make a video file if needed. If Blender produced an image sequence, encode the frames into a video using a format and codec accepted by the target tool. If you render directly to a video container, verify that the resulting file is playable and meets the service’s upload requirements.
- Upload and verify. Upload the rendered shot in the AI tool’s video-input workflow. Confirm the preview plays and that the clip’s framing and timing look right before generating or modifying it. Handle audio according to the destination’s current documentation; do not assume it will be retained or processed.
Use a still image only in a mode that accepts one
For an image-conditioned workflow, render a Blender frame that communicates the composition, subject appearance, or visual style you want to guide. In Blender, set the desired frame, then use Render > Render Image and save the result in an image format accepted by the AI tool.

An image reference is not a substitute for required source footage. Luma’s documentation describes image references and start-frame use in particular Modify workflows; consult the selected mode’s instructions to see whether it accepts a reference image, a start frame, or both, and whether it also requires a video upload.
Export a 3D file only for a 3D-aware destination
Blender’s manual lists interchange options including glTF 2.0, Alembic, USD, OBJ, PLY, STL, and FBX. Find supported formats under File > Import/Export; some formats or functions may require enabling an add-on in Preferences. The right choice depends on the receiving application and which parts of the scene must survive transfer.

| Format | When it may fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| USD | A destination documents USD import and needs supported scene structure or animation. | Blender’s USD exporter supports documented object types and evaluated mesh animation, but does not export invisible objects, USD layers, or variants. See the Blender USD manual. |
| FBX | The receiving application specifically documents FBX import, including for animated characters or complex 3D exchange. | Blender exports FBX using its FBX add-on. FBX is not a default format for AI video uploads. See the Blender FBX manual. |
glTF 2.0 (.gltf or .glb) |
The destination supports glTF and the asset or scene data it needs. | Verify the importer’s support for the materials, animation, and other features your scene uses. Blender lists glTF 2.0 in its pipeline overview. |
Alembic (.abc) |
The destination supports geometry-cache exchange. | Confirm the destination’s handling of the cache and any animation requirements; it is not a rendered video. Blender lists Alembic support in its pipeline overview. |
| OBJ, PLY, or STL | The receiver specifically requests one of these geometry-oriented formats. | Do not assume these carry the cameras, animation, materials, or scene structure your workflow needs. Verify against the destination’s importer. |
For USD, Blender documents export of visible supported objects, with an option to limit export to selected objects. Supported types include meshes, perspective cameras, curves, text converted to meshes, lights, hair as curves subject to a parent-strand limitation, point clouds, metaballs, volumes, and armatures. The exporter handles evaluated meshes for animation, including static meshes, deforming meshes with unchanged topology, and meshes whose topology changes. Those capabilities do not mean every USD feature or Blender scene element is exported.
Blender describes FBX as a widely used 3D exchange format, especially for animated characters and complex scene data. That makes it a candidate when a 3D-aware destination requests FBX—not a replacement for rendering a camera view when the destination expects video.

Check the destination’s limits before rendering
Formats and limits can differ even between features in the same product. Luma AI’s Ray3 Modify FAQ, published December 16, 2025, lists MP4 and MOV among accepted common video formats and specifies uploads up to 10 seconds and 100 MB for the workflow documented on that page: Ray3 Modify FAQ. Treat those figures as feature-specific, not as limits for every Luma feature or every AI video service.
Luma AI’s Modify Video FAQ, published June 4, 2025, lists MP4, MOV, and WMV and describes a 10-second upload with a workflow video length up to 30 seconds for the Ray2 feature covered there: Modify Video FAQ. Luma’s how-to guide also describes uploading source footage and using an image as a start frame or style reference, with a 10-second upload limit for the procedure on that page: How to Modify Videos in Luma Dream Machine. These pages may change; check the current documentation and the upload screen for the exact feature you plan to use.
