The map can show you where to look; whether you can see a faint object depends on darkness, the Moon, weather, your equipment, and your view of the horizon.
What can a galaxy app show you?
There are two different experiences: browsing an image of a deep-sky object on a screen and trying to see it in the night sky. NASA’s Hubble Skymap is for digital exploration. It lets you zoom around a selection of galaxies, stars, nebulae, and other objects, select targets, and find further information. NASA’s page also links to target catalogs and observing information.

A sky map has a different job: it helps translate a target into a direction and time. NASA recommends interactive maps such as Stellarium Web for learning the sky, and notes that smartphone astronomy apps can use GPS to show the sky for your location. An app does not make a dim galaxy brighter or guarantee that it will be visible.

Which free astronomy app or sky map should you use?
For browsing Hubble-linked objects: NASA Hubble Skymap
Start here if you want to explore named objects and see Hubble-related imagery and information. It is a browser-based way to learn what a galaxy or nebula is before deciding whether to look for it outdoors.

For a general interactive sky map: Stellarium Web
Use Stellarium Web to explore the sky and orient yourself among stars and constellations. NASA includes it among the interactive maps it recommends.
For observing with a phone: a GPS-enabled astronomy app
A mobile app can match the sky display to your location, date, and time; some can also use the phone’s orientation sensors. Feature availability varies by app and platform, so check what its free tier includes before relying on a particular catalog, offline access, or night mode.

The current Google Play listing for the Stellarium mobile app describes a base app with sky simulation for any date, time, and location, deep-sky objects, and red night mode. It lists Stellarium Plus separately as an in-app purchase, with a deeper catalog and advanced observing tools. The listing showed an update on 2026-09-13. Do not assume that features listed for Plus are included in the base app, and check the listing for your device for current terms.

- Explore a target indoors. Browse NASA’s Hubble Skymap and choose an object you want to learn about. Treat images as references, not a preview of how the object will look through binoculars or a small telescope.
- Choose a realistic first target. NASA describes Messier catalog objects as targets backyard astronomers can observe with binoculars or a small telescope under a relatively dark sky. The Caldwell catalog adds targets in both northern and southern skies. These are starting points, not guarantees: visibility depends on the object, equipment, location, and sky conditions.
- Set the observing location and time. Enter your location, date, and planned observing time in the sky map or app. NASA JPL’s sky-software activity explains how to use an azimuthal grid and record a target’s direction and altitude.
- Check when the target is above your horizon. Note its direction and altitude at the time you plan to observe. A target may be technically above the horizon but hidden by buildings, trees, or terrain.
- Check darkness and the Moon. Artificial light brightens the sky and reduces the contrast of faint objects. NASA describes the Bortle scale as nine classes, from class 1 (darkest) to class 9 (most light-polluted), and says a class 3 or 4 location is dark enough for a great evening of stargazing for most people. Check the Moon’s phase and rise and set times, too: moonlight adds skyglow.
- Check weather and access. Clouds, wind, temperature, and wildfire smoke can all affect a session. Confirm that your chosen site is safe and legally accessible at night. For an unfamiliar spot, NASA recommends scouting during daylight and arriving before sunset.
- Protect your night vision. NASA’s May 2024 beginner guide says eyes take approximately 30 minutes to become dark adapted, and a bright light can temporarily disrupt night vision. Use a red flashlight or headlamp; you can also switch a phone display to red or cover it with red cellophane.
Can you see galaxies with binoculars?
Some catalog targets are suitable for binoculars or a small telescope when the sky is relatively dark. That does not mean every galaxy will be easy to find or show visible detail. A Hubble image is captured by a powerful space telescope and processed for viewing; it is not a realistic expectation for what a backyard observer will see through modest equipment.

Use the app to find a target’s position, then judge visibility by the actual conditions. Light pollution and moonlight reduce contrast, while clouds, smoke, obstructions, and the target’s altitude can make an otherwise promising plan impractical.

A printable chart is a useful backup if you do not want to keep checking a bright screen. NASA JPL points to monthly and customizable charts. If you use a circular chart, hold it overhead with its north aligned to local north.
