What to do depends on what “emergency call mode” means on your iPhone. If an emergency call is still active, stay on the line and speak to the responder. If you texted 911, Apple says to restart the iPhone after the interaction ends. If the screen shows SOS, SOS only, No Service, or Searching, the issue is usually that the phone is not connected to its regular cellular network—not that an emergency call is in progress.
First, check whether emergency services are still being contacted
If an emergency call is active and it was placed by mistake, do not hang up or restart the phone. Apple’s instruction is: “If an emergency call has been made and you don’t need emergency services, don’t hang up. Wait until a responder answers, then explain that you don’t need help.” Apple’s iPhone User Guide gives this guidance for accidental calls.

If the emergency call has ended, allow the callback period to pass
On CDMA iPhones, Apple says the phone can remain in emergency call mode for a few minutes after an emergency call ends so emergency services can call back. During that time, data transmission and text messages are blocked. It may clear without action; do not reject a possible callback or disable emergency features to make the message disappear. Apple documents this behavior in the iPhone User Guide.

Apple says an iPhone enters emergency mode for 30 minutes after texting 911, and restarting exits that post-text mode. This instruction applies to the documented mode after texting 911; wait until the emergency interaction is finished before restarting. Apple’s emergency call and text guidance describes the behavior.

If SOS, SOS only, No Service, or Searching remains, troubleshoot cellular service
“SOS” or “SOS only” in the status bar means the iPhone is not connected to its own carrier network. In supported areas it may still place emergency calls using another carrier’s network; the status by itself does not mean an emergency call is active. Apple identifies Australia, Canada, and the United States for this status-bar feature in its cellular service troubleshooting guide. Try these steps in order:
