Researchers have demonstrated a paper-like film that can be written with ultraviolet light and erased with heat. It is not ordinary paper that responds to any light, nor is it an established retail product: the 2014 prototype uses a specialized composite material and a laboratory UV lamp.
How does rewritable paper work?
In the 2014 study by Wenshou Wang, Ning Xie, Le He and Yadong Yin, the writing surface was a composite film made with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocrystals, a redox dye and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC). Light changes the dye’s color state; heat reverses that change.

UV light writes by bleaching the dye
The researchers used a 365-nanometer ultraviolet lamp. TiO2 helps drive a photocatalytic reduction reaction in the dye where the light falls, bleaching those exposed areas. In the methylene-blue version, the blue dye becomes a colorless reduced form, leaving a pattern without adding ink during writing. This describes the laboratory method, not a recommendation to use a UV lamp yourself. Nature Communications’ study details the material and process.
Heat restores the color and erases the image
Heating the film in air promotes oxidation, returning the dye to its colored state and erasing the pattern. The demonstration used a 115°C treatment. That temperature is a reported experimental condition, not a consumer-use instruction or a specification for a product available to buy. The authors’ report describes the result in its laboratory context.

Why the image lasts
The bleached image does not immediately recolor in ambient conditions because HEC helps stabilize the reduced dye and slows oxygen diffusion. In the reported tests, images remained legible for more than three days. The authors also reported more than 20 write–erase cycles without significant loss of contrast or resolution. These are results from their setup, not independent replication or guaranteed performance for a commercial material. The study provides the experimental findings.
Can you print on paper with light and erase it with heat?
Yes, in the sense demonstrated by this research: UV light can form an image on a specially formulated composite film, and heating it in air can erase that image. The distinction matters: the study did not show that ordinary office paper can be rewritten this way. The University of California, Riverside’s Office of Technology Commercialization describes a patented film that uses UV for printing and heat for erasure, with flexible plastic substrates, signage and sensing among possible application directions. “Rewritable paper” can mean other technologies
The term covers products and research systems that work in very different ways. A reusable notebook, an electronic writing tablet and a light-printable film should not be treated as interchangeable.

What the results do—and do not—show
The study establishes that a light-written, heat-erased image can be produced repeatedly on the researchers’ material under the conditions they tested. The cycle count, image persistence and erasure temperature belong to that experimental setup; they are not specifications for a product consumers can purchase.
