On a personal Windows 11 PC, OneDrive does not offer a switch that filters backups by file extension. Microsoft documents extension-based exclusions as administrator controls for work or school devices: an OneDrive sync policy set through Group Policy or Intune, and, for an entire organization, a block-upload setting in the SharePoint admin center. If you use a personal Microsoft account on a PC you manage yourself, the realistic options are folder selection and keeping the files outside the OneDrive folder. The sections below explain which option fits your situation and what each one does and does not stop.
Check which kind of OneDrive account you have
The available controls depend on who manages the account and the device:

- Work or school account on a managed PC: your IT administrator can set an extension-based upload exclusion in the OneDrive sync app policy. You can ask them to do it; you usually cannot do it yourself.
- Work or school account, organization-wide rule: a SharePoint administrator can block uploads of listed extensions for everyone in the organization.
- Personal Microsoft account: there is no administrator console for the account, and the SharePoint admin center is not available to you. Use the folder-level and location-based approaches described below.
Option 1: Exclude file types with the OneDrive sync policy
This is the most flexible client-side control. Microsoft’s OneDrive policy is named “Exclude specific kinds of files from being uploaded.” The administrator can enter a full filename or a wildcard pattern such as *.pst, and matching files are skipped during upload. Pattern matching is case-insensitive, so *.LOG and *.log behave the same way.

- Matching new files stay in the local OneDrive folder. They are not uploaded, and OneDrive shows them with an “Excluded from sync” status.
- The policy takes effect only after OneDrive is restarted.
- The policy governs the sync app. A user can still upload an excluded file manually through the OneDrive website, so this control is not a complete security boundary.
To apply it, an administrator follows these steps:
- Open the OneDrive policy in Group Policy or in the Intune device configuration profile for OneDrive.
- Enable Exclude specific kinds of files from being uploaded and add each pattern on its own line, for example
*.log, or a complete filename such ascustomers-export.csvwhen only that file should match. - Restart OneDrive on the affected PC: right-click the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area, select Quit OneDrive, then open OneDrive again from the Start menu.
- Confirm the result by placing a matching file in the OneDrive folder. It should remain on the PC and show the “Excluded from sync” status rather than uploading.
This policy does not remove copies that already exist in OneDrive. Those are covered in the section on existing files below.

Option 2: Block uploads of an extension across the organization
If the rule should apply to everyone in a work or school organization, a SharePoint administrator can use the file-type block instead of a per-device policy. The path is SharePoint admin center > Settings > Sync > Block upload of specific file types.
- Sign in to the SharePoint admin center as an administrator.
- Go to Settings > Sync.
- Under Block upload of specific file types, enter each extension without a leading period or other punctuation. Enter
exe, not.exe. - Save the change and allow about eight hours for the OneDrive sync app to detect and apply it.
This setting blocks uploads only. It does not stop downloads of files with those extensions that are already stored in the organization’s libraries.

Options for a personal PC
Without administrator access, three approaches are available. None of them is an extension filter, so choose based on what you are trying to achieve.

Choose folders: keep selected folders off this computer
To stop specific OneDrive folders from syncing to one computer, open the OneDrive settings and go to Account > Choose folders. Clearing a folder removes its local copy from that PC, but the folder and its contents stay available online. Some important folders cannot be cleared. Do not clear Documents, Desktop, or Pictures as a workaround for a particular file type, because the choice applies to every file inside the folder.

Files On-Demand: manage local storage, not uploads
Files On-Demand is built into the OneDrive app in Windows 11, according to Microsoft Support. It controls whether the content of synced files is downloaded to the PC, which can free disk space. It does not keep any extension from uploading. A file that is online-only is still part of your OneDrive, so do not treat this setting as a way to avoid backup.
Keep files outside the OneDrive folder
Files stored outside the OneDrive folder in File Explorer are not synced by location. This is the only personal-account approach that keeps a particular file type out of OneDrive entirely. The trade-off is that those files are not protected by OneDrive, so they need another backup method if they matter.

Moving or renaming files inside the synced folder is not a reliable exclusion. Changes and deletions in the OneDrive folder can sync to the cloud and to your other devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsComparing the methods
| Method | Who can configure it | What it controls | Key limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| OneDrive sync policy (Group Policy or Intune) | Administrator of a managed work or school PC | Upload of new files matching a filename or wildcard pattern | Restart OneDrive to apply; website uploads still possible; not a personal-account setting |
| SharePoint admin center block-upload setting | SharePoint administrator | Uploads of listed extensions across the organization | Enter bare extensions; blocks uploads only, not downloads; about eight hours to apply |
| Choose folders | Account owner | Whether selected OneDrive folders sync to this PC | Folder-level only; cleared folders stay online; some folders cannot be cleared |
| Files On-Demand | Account owner, on this PC | Whether synced file content is downloaded locally | Storage control only; not an upload exclusion |
| Keep files outside the OneDrive folder | Account owner | Whether a file is inside the synced folder at all | Those files are not protected by OneDrive |
Files already in OneDrive
An exclusion stops future uploads. It does not delete anything that has already reached OneDrive. Whether an existing local file is treated differently can depend on whether it was already synced and on the account’s policy, so verify before assuming anything about old copies. To review or remove a cloud copy, check it on the OneDrive website and delete it there deliberately. Do not rely on deleting the local copy, because that deletion can sync to the cloud.

Troubleshooting
- A matching file still uploads: confirm the policy is enabled and the pattern is spelled correctly, then restart OneDrive. Remember that the file may have been uploaded through the website, which the sync policy does not control.
- The SharePoint block has not taken effect: wait about eight hours after saving the setting before testing again.
- The setting is missing from your settings: the control is an administrator policy or SharePoint admin setting. A personal account or an unmanaged PC will not show it.
Microsoft notes that organization-level restrictions can vary, so confirm the behavior with your administrator if your organization has its own rules.
