Check the bid–ask spread and executable depth, estimate the average execution price and price impact for your order, account for fees, and compare like-for-like alternatives. A token’s chart price or 24-hour volume cannot tell you by itself how much you can buy at that price. Liquidity changes, so check again close to execution.
What token liquidity tells you—and what it does not
Liquidity is the ability to trade without causing a large change in price or accepting a substantially worse execution than expected. It is not one permanent score attached to a token. A token may have a relatively active market on one exchange and a thin market on another, or trade differently against different quote assets. A pool on one blockchain is also a distinct market from a pool for the same token on another chain.

The displayed price on a chart is not a promise that you can buy at that price. A chart may show the most recent trade, while your purchase depends on the sell orders or pool liquidity available when your order arrives. S&P Global describes crypto liquidity as fragmented across assets, pairs, and venues; its discussion covers both centralized exchanges and decentralized markets. S&P Global’s analysis is useful context, not a live quote for the market you are considering.

For a buyer, the practical question is not “Is this token liquid?” in isolation. It is: What spread, executable depth, fees, and likely price impact would my order face in this specific market right now? The answer depends on the size and type of order you place, as well as market conditions.

Identify the exact market and order first
Before comparing liquidity, write down what you intend to trade. This prevents a common error: treating ticker-level information as if it described every market for an asset.
- Identify the asset. Check the asset name and, where applicable, the token contract address. On a decentralized exchange (DEX), confirm the blockchain as well; similar names or tickers do not establish that two tokens are the same asset.
- Specify the pair. Note the quote asset, such as USD, USDT, or ETH. A token/USDT market is not interchangeable with a token/USD market.
- Specify the venue. Record the particular exchange, DEX, or pool—not just the token’s name.
- Set the intended order size. Estimate how much you will spend and whether you plan to place a market order, a limit order, or a swap. The execution estimate is only useful if it is for approximately your actual size.
Compare like with like. If you are considering several venues, use the same asset, comparable quote currency, similar order size, and the same measurement time. If those conditions differ, explain the difference rather than treating the results as a direct comparison.
Read the spread and order-book depth on a centralized exchange
Calculate the quoted spread
In a centralized exchange order book, the bid is the highest displayed price a buyer is offering, and the ask is the lowest displayed price a seller is requesting. The quoted spread is the ask minus the bid. A buyer crossing the spread with an immediate purchase generally faces the ask rather than the last-traded price.
To compare markets at different price levels, express the spread relative to the midpoint:
Midpoint = (best bid + best ask) / 2Spread percentage = (best ask − best bid) / midpoint × 100

For example, if a hypothetical book shows a bid of 9.90 and an ask of 10.10, the midpoint is 10.00 and the spread is 0.20, or 2% of the midpoint. This illustration is arithmetic only, not a recommended spread or a claim about any live market. A smaller spread means a lower quoted cost for a small trade at the top of the book, but it does not establish that a larger order can be filled near that quote.
Inspect cumulative depth, not just the best quotes
Depth shows how much buying or selling interest is available at different prices. For a planned purchase, inspect the sell side—the asks you would consume—and, for a fuller picture of the market, the bid side as well. Cumulative depth means adding available order value through successive price levels. State the distance from the midpoint when comparing depth, such as within 1%; a depth figure without a price band and venue is difficult to interpret.
S&P Global describes 1% market depth as executable volume within a 1% range of the quoted midpoint. It notes that shallow depth makes a large trade more likely to affect price. A narrow top-of-book spread can coexist with little size behind the best ask. If your order exceeds that displayed size, it may consume several price levels, producing a higher average purchase price.
Where the interface allows it, inspect depth on both sides and observe whether it persists rather than relying on a single snapshot. Order-book quotes can change or disappear. Kraken also identifies order-book stability and bid–ask imbalance as useful considerations when assessing market liquidity. Neither a large displayed order nor a momentarily balanced book guarantees that the same liquidity will remain available for your execution.
Understand the EU transparency rule in context
For covered crypto-asset service providers operating trading platforms under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), Article 76 requires publication of advertised bid and ask prices and the depth of trading interests at those prices. The information is to be available continuously during trading hours; transaction price, volume, and time are to be made public as close to real time as technically possible. This is a requirement for covered platforms under the EU framework, not a claim that every exchange worldwide publishes identical data. See ESMA’s MiCA Article 76 text.

Estimate the execution for your actual purchase size
Once you have the market identified, model the order you expect to place. On a centralized exchange, use a depth calculator or order preview if available, or work through the asks the order would consume. The resulting estimate should reflect the average fill price, not only the best ask. Include trading fees in the comparison, because a market with a slightly tighter quote may not have the lower total execution cost after fees.

Compare the estimated average purchase price with a stated reference, such as the current midpoint, and record the implied price impact. One useful way to express the buyer’s estimated price impact is:
Estimated price impact = (estimated average fill price − reference price) / reference price × 100
Use the same reference for every market in a comparison and say what it is. This calculation describes the modeled effect of executing the order against the visible liquidity; it is not a guarantee of the eventual fill. For an immediate purchase, the reference price should not be mistaken for a price at which the full order is available.
Slippage describes the difference between the expected and actual execution outcome. Price impact is an estimate of how the proposed trade interacts with available depth; realized slippage can differ if quotes move, liquidity changes, or execution conditions shift before the order completes. S&P Global discusses slippage as a difference between expected and actual outcome and notes that a large trade relative to pool size can cause significant deviation. Its market-liquidity analysis does not establish a universal acceptable slippage percentage.

For a market order, an order preview or depth calculation is an estimate against currently visible liquidity, not a fixed-price contract. A limit order can specify the worst price you are willing to accept, but it may not fill, may fill only in part, or may wait while the market moves. The choice is a trade-off between execution certainty and price control; liquidity assessment does not remove that trade-off.
Assess liquidity in a DEX pool
A DEX swap is evaluated against a specific pool, not against an exchange-wide order book. Identify the chain, token contract, pool, and paired asset. Then enter the intended swap size in the interface or another pool-specific quote mechanism and inspect the estimated amount received, the price impact shown, fees, and applicable network costs. Check that the estimate is for the intended pool and exact tokens; a token’s aggregate pool value does not reveal the execution cost of your particular swap.
Automated market makers (AMMs) use pool balances and pool-specific mechanics to determine swap prices. The size of a trade relative to the pool and its pricing curve matters: a trade that is large relative to available liquidity can move the price substantially. As a result, a pool’s headline size alone is not a substitute for a quote at your trade size.
Uniswap’s cited pool documentation is specifically for Uniswap v2. It explains that a v2 pool is a smart-contract trading venue for a token pair, seeded with token balances before it can facilitate trades. That description should not be generalized to other AMM designs or versions. Uniswap Developers’ v2 Pools documentation points readers to v4 documentation for the current version.

Use trading volume as context, not proof
Trading volume measures past activity over a stated period. It does not show how much can be bought now at a reasonable price. A market can report substantial volume yet have limited executable depth at the time you trade. Volume can also be split across exchanges and pairs, so a token-level or aggregated figure may conceal conditions in the precise market you plan to use.

Reported volume deserves scrutiny because some activity may be fabricated or wash-traded—matched or offsetting trades that inflate volume without representing genuine liquidity. Kraken discusses this risk in its explanation of crypto-market liquidity. Use volume to understand recent activity and whether trading has been consistent, then corroborate it with the live spread, depth, and a size-specific execution estimate. Kraken’s overview also identifies order-book stability and bid–ask imbalance as additional context.
Market capitalization and a price chart are not substitutes either. A market-cap figure does not tell you how much is available for sale at nearby prices, and the chart’s latest price is not an executable quote for your order. Treat each as context, not evidence that a specific order can be filled cheaply.
Compare alternatives and recheck before placing the order
If you have access to more than one suitable venue or pool, compare them using the same purchase size and a consistent measurement time. Record enough detail to avoid comparing unlike markets:
- Exact token, contract where relevant, quote asset, venue or pool, and chain.
- Best bid, best ask, midpoint, and spread percentage for an order book.
- Executable depth within a stated band around midpoint, especially on the side relevant to your purchase.
- Estimated average execution price and price impact at your intended size.
- Trading or pool fees and applicable network costs.
- How stable the visible depth or quote appears under current conditions.
A higher reported volume does not automatically identify the better execution venue. Compare the expected cost for your own order, not a token-wide ranking. Volatility, external events, and venue conditions can change available depth; take a fresh look close to execution rather than treating a saved quote, chart, or screenshot as a guarantee.
S&P Global’s report analysis covers the historical window from January 1, 2023, through February 28, 2025, and discusses selected Binance and Uniswap v3 markets, including example-specific depth observations for EUR-USDT and BTC-USDT/ETH-USDT. Those are historical findings attached to the report’s selected markets and context—not current liquidity readings or benchmarks for an arbitrary token. The examples do not supply a universal threshold for deciding whether a purchase is safe.
A practical pre-trade checklist
- Confirm the asset. Verify the token identity and contract address where relevant; confirm the chain for a DEX trade.
- Choose the exact market. Write down the exchange and pair, or the pool and paired asset. Do not substitute another pair’s volume or depth.
- Set your order size. Base the check on the amount you plan to buy and the order type you expect to use.
- Measure the quote. For an order book, record the best bid and ask and calculate spread relative to midpoint. For a pool, request a quote for the precise swap.
- Check executable liquidity. Inspect cumulative asks and depth bands for a centralized purchase; inspect the pool-specific swap estimate for a DEX purchase.
- Estimate total execution cost. Compare the expected average fill or amount received against a clearly stated reference, and include fees and network costs where applicable.
- Compare comparable alternatives. Use the same size and time window, and note any difference in pair, access, or mechanics.
- Refresh the check before execution. Reassess if the price or market conditions have moved, and do not rely on old displayed liquidity.
Why there is no universal liquidity cutoff
The cited sources do not establish a universally safe minimum 24-hour volume, maximum spread, required depth, or acceptable slippage threshold. A spread or impact that is tolerable for one buyer and order size may be unacceptable for another. Nor does a threshold applied to one venue, pair, or market regime automatically transfer to another.
Make the decision from the estimated cost and execution risk of your own order in its intended market. If the available evidence does not let you estimate the likely execution—because the pair is unclear, depth is unavailable, or the quote cannot be checked for your order size—then volume alone cannot fill that gap.
