Owning hundreds of stocks does not necessarily mean your portfolio is well diversified. Diversification depends on how your money is distributed across investments with different risks and return drivers—not just how many tickers you hold. When a few AI-linked mega-cap companies account for a large share of a broad index, that index can still provide wide company coverage while concentrating market-weight and theme exposure in a smaller group.
You can assess that exposure by looking through your funds’ holdings, weights, sectors, and shared business drivers. Broadening a portfolio is possible, but every alternative changes what you own and can lag if today’s leaders keep outperforming. Diversification can manage risk; it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent a loss.

What diversification means—and what it does not
Diversification is the practice of spreading investments across assets and exposures so that a portfolio does not depend entirely on one company, sector, or economic driver. The SEC describes diversification at two levels: across asset categories and within each category. Stocks, bonds, and cash are different asset categories; within stocks, holdings can differ by company size, sector, geography, and investment style.

The number of securities is only a rough clue. A fund can hold hundreds of companies and still be heavily weighted toward its largest names. Several funds may also own many of the same companies or rely on the same theme. As Fidelity’s head of capital markets strategy, Bradford Pineault, puts it: “An index can hold hundreds of securities, but if their performance is driven by just a few companies, sectors, or themes, investors may be less diversified than they’d intended.”

A broad index fund can therefore be diversified in one sense—owning many companies—yet concentrated in another, such as market value or shared exposure to AI-related investment. The distinction matters because a portfolio’s results can be more dependent on a handful of businesses than its security count suggests. The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing also cautions that a narrowly focused fund, such as one limited to a single industry, does not necessarily diversify a portfolio.
How AI-linked leadership can concentrate a broad index
Many broad U.S. stock indexes use market-cap weighting: companies with larger market values receive larger index weights. When the largest companies rise faster than the rest, their share of the index grows. Investors in a cap-weighted index fund continue to own the full index, but more of each invested dollar is then tied to its biggest constituents.
Fidelity reported that the ten largest U.S. stocks made up nearly 40% of the S&P 500 as of June 30, 2026. For comparison, Fidelity put their share at 23% in 2020 and 17% in 1996. These are Fidelity’s figures for the top ten at the specified dates; they are not a universal measure of every index or a definition of which companies count as AI stocks. See Fidelity’s explanation of concentration risk in index funds.
Other publications measure concentration differently. BlackRock reported that the top 20 S&P 500 companies represented 49% of the index and contributed 64% of its five-year return in its 2026 analysis. Invesco’s 2026 outlook, published in 2025, said a group it defined as NVDA, MSFT, AMZN, META, AVGO, GOOGL, ORCL, and AMD accounted for more than half of S&P 500 returns and almost one third of global equity returns in 2025, using data through October 28. Those statistics cover different company groups, time periods, and calculations, so they should not be combined into a single concentration figure. Read the methodology in BlackRock’s mega-cap analysis and Invesco’s 2026 outlook.

Why the AI theme can cross company and sector lines
AI is not a single sector label. Companies in different industries may be linked by the same investment cycle: spending on AI infrastructure, demand for data centers, or expectations about future AI adoption. S&P Global Market Intelligence describes AI-related capital expenditure and data-center demand as shared drivers among major companies. If those drivers influence several holdings at once, owning more than one ticker does not necessarily provide as much independent exposure as the count implies.
That does not mean all AI-linked companies will move together, or that an index with large AI exposure is certain to fall. It means the portfolio’s outcome may be more sensitive to shared business and market conditions. S&P Global notes that historical correlations vary depending on the measurement window, return frequency, and weighting method. Options-implied correlations can offer a forward-looking signal, but S&P Global says they are not available or reliable for every less-liquid asset. Its discussion of these limits appears in its analysis of AI concentration and implied correlations.
How to check what your funds actually expose you to
Start with your whole portfolio, not one fund in isolation. A stock fund may be broad within U.S. large companies while your overall account also contains international stocks, bonds, or cash. Conversely, owning several funds does not guarantee that they diversify one another. The SEC recommends checking the top holdings across funds to see whether their combined exposures match the diversification you want.
- List every investment and its role. Include funds in retirement accounts and taxable accounts, along with individual stocks, bonds, and cash. Note whether each holding is a broad-market fund, a sector or style fund, an international fund, or another asset type.
- Look through each fund to its underlying holdings. Use the fund issuer’s holdings or portfolio information. Identify the largest positions and their weights rather than relying on the fund name or the number of securities it reports.
- Check for overlap. Compare the largest companies across your funds. A broad index fund and a technology-focused fund, for example, may both own some of the same mega-cap companies. Consider the combined exposure across your account, not only each fund’s separate top-ten list.
- Check concentration by company, sector, and theme. Ask whether a few holdings account for a large portion of your equity exposure, whether one sector dominates, and whether multiple companies depend on related drivers such as AI investment. A company’s sector classification will not always capture a shared theme.
- Review asset allocation against your circumstances. The SEC says an appropriate mix of stocks, bonds, and cash depends on factors including your time horizon and risk tolerance. The same stock-fund overlap can have different significance in portfolios with different overall allocations and goals.
- Revisit the picture periodically. Weights change as market prices move and funds rebalance. Rechecking holdings helps you see whether the portfolio still reflects your intended exposures; it is not a way to forecast which holdings will lead next.
The SEC’s overview of asset allocation and diversification explains that rebalancing means restoring a desired allocation. That is a portfolio-maintenance concept, not a universal schedule or an individual recommendation to buy or sell.

Ways to broaden exposure—and the trade-offs
There is no universally best way to respond to concentration. The approaches below alter different dimensions of a portfolio, and none guarantees better returns. Schwab discusses several equity approaches in its analysis of diversification in an era of concentration.
| Approach | What changes | Trade-off to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Keep market-cap weighting | Maintains exposure to the broad market, with larger companies carrying larger weights. | The portfolio remains more dependent on the largest companies when their index weights are high. |
| Equal-weight an index | Schwab says its S&P 500 Equal Weight Index gives each of the 500 constituents a 0.20% weight and rebalances quarterly. | It reduces the weight of the biggest companies relative to a cap-weighted S&P 500, while shifting more weight toward smaller constituents. Equal company weights do not produce equal sector weights; sector weight depends on how many companies in that sector are included. |
| Use fundamental weighting | Weights companies using measures such as revenue, profitability, cash flow, or yield rather than market value alone. | This creates a different portfolio from a cap-weighted index and can underperform it. |
| Add small- or mid-cap exposure | Broadens company-size exposure beyond mega- and large-cap stocks. | Smaller companies bring different risks and return patterns; their performance is not guaranteed to offset large-cap concentration. |
| Add value- or dividend-oriented exposure | Changes the portfolio’s style or factor mix relative to a growth-heavy exposure. | These styles can have different return patterns and may lag when the market favors other styles. |
| Add international equities | Expands geographic exposure beyond U.S. companies. | Geographic breadth does not guarantee independent returns; inspect the holdings and underlying exposures of the international fund as well. |
| Include bonds, cash, or other asset categories | Changes the portfolio’s asset allocation rather than only its stock mix. | The appropriate mix depends on an investor’s timeframe, goals, and risk tolerance; it is not a one-size-fits-all answer to stock concentration. |
Equal weighting is a different allocation, not a free hedge
Equal weighting reduces the influence of the biggest companies compared with cap weighting, but it also allocates relatively more to companies that are smaller within the index. Quarterly rebalancing means the index periodically restores its equal company weights. That process changes exposure; it does not establish that equal weighting will outperform or provide protection in every market. It also does not make sectors equally weighted, because sectors contain different numbers of index companies.
Broadening can mean underperforming recent leaders
If AI-linked technology leaders continue to outperform, an allocation with less exposure to them may lag a cap-weighted benchmark. Schwab identifies that possibility in its discussion of alternatives. Invesco likewise says its rebalancing stance could be wrong if the AI narrative dominates in 2026. A concentration review is therefore a decision about how much dependence on a group of companies or themes you accept—not evidence that those leaders are about to decline.

What diversification can and cannot do
Diversification can reduce dependence on a single investment or driver by spreading exposure, but it cannot reliably identify future winners. It also cannot remove market risk: investments across different holdings can lose value at the same time. Vanguard states the limit plainly: “Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss.” Its explanation appears in “How to invest your next dollar”.

Likewise, concentration is not proof of a bubble or a forecast of an imminent reversal. Invesco’s discussion of bubble concerns and rebalancing is an investment outlook, not a certainty. Investors can use holdings and allocation analysis to understand what they own, but past returns, market weights, and correlations do not promise what comes next.
Frequently Asked Questions
How diversified is my S&P 500 fund if a few AI stocks drive returns?
It may be broad by number of companies but concentrated by market weight or shared theme. Fidelity reported that the ten largest U.S. stocks made up nearly 40% of the S&P 500 as of June 30, 2026. Check the fund’s current holdings and weights, then consider how those holdings overlap with your other investments.
Does owning hundreds of stocks mean my portfolio is diversified?
Not necessarily. A high security count can still leave substantial exposure to a few large companies, sectors, or common return drivers. The SEC recommends checking a fund’s top holdings and looking across asset categories as well as within them.

No. Concentration describes how much an index or portfolio depends on particular companies or themes; it does not establish that prices are unsustainable or predict an imminent decline. Invesco’s discussion of bubble concerns and its 2026 rebalancing stance is an investment judgment, not a certainty.

Will equal-weighting an index protect me if AI stocks fall?
It reduces the biggest companies’ weights relative to a cap-weighted index, but it is not a guaranteed hedge. Equal-weighting changes the portfolio’s exposures, including giving more relative weight to smaller index constituents, and can lag if the largest leaders continue to outperform. Schwab says its S&P 500 Equal Weight Index assigns 0.20% to each constituent and rebalances quarterly.
Can diversification prevent investment losses?
No. It can spread exposure and reduce dependence on one holding or driver, but investments can decline together. Vanguard states that diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss.
The Bottom Line
To judge diversification, look beyond ticker count: review your combined holdings, weights, asset categories, and shared return drivers. Broadening exposure can change concentration, but it can also change performance relative to the market leaders. No approach guarantees gains or prevents losses.
