A stablecoin is useful collateral only if your venue accepts it for your specific product and account—and gives it enough collateral value to support the position. Check the venue’s live eligibility rules, valuation method, haircuts, limits and liquidation process separately from the token’s peg, reserves and redemption terms. Those are distinct layers of risk; a stablecoin can be redeemable by an eligible holder yet receive a haircut, lose eligibility or be liquidated by a venue.
Start with the venue and account, not the token’s peg
A stablecoin targeting one unit of a currency is not necessarily credited as one unit of collateral. The venue sets the rules for whether it accepts the asset and how much margin value it recognizes. Those rules can vary by product, account mode, jurisdiction and market conditions.

Confirm the exact eligibility and valuation terms
- Check the precise token and supported network. A venue’s acceptance of one asset or chain does not establish acceptance of every token with a similar name or every version of that token.
- Confirm that the asset is eligible for the specific spot, futures or other derivatives account you plan to use, in your jurisdiction and account mode.
- Find the collateral value ratio or weight, haircut schedule, price index, asset cap and any concentration limit. A cap or concentration rule can reduce recognized value even when the token remains eligible.
- Check how often valuation updates and what happens if the venue’s price index, conversion rate or eligibility status changes.
For example, Binance’s USDⓈ-M Futures Multi-Assets documentation describes asset-specific collateral value ratios and haircuts, real-time exchange-rate valuation and automatic exchange triggers. Treat the interface and parameters as dynamic: check the current terms shown for your account.

Use the venue’s own formula rather than assuming a token’s market value counts in full. Coinbase Global Exchange describes collateral value using notional value and collateral weight; it applies the greater of a base haircut and a closeout-horizon haircut. The relevant value may therefore depend on both the asset amount and the venue’s current rules. If the venue gives you a calculator or account-level collateral figure, verify that it reflects the product and account mode you will actually use.

Understand how collateral can be liquidated
Collateral risk is not limited to whether a token holds its peg. When margin falls below a required level, a venue may sell or convert collateral to meet obligations. That can happen while the token is still trading near its target value.
Trace the liquidation sequence
- Identify the maintenance-margin threshold and what account metric is compared with it.
- Check whether liquidation can affect only the position using the collateral or can draw on assets across a cross-margin account.
- Find out which collateral assets may be sold or converted, in what order, and whether the venue uses automatic exchange rules.
- Review whether the venue can change collateral parameters or eligibility, and how those changes are communicated.
Coinbase’s portfolio-margin documentation says collateral may be liquidated when portfolio margin falls below maintenance margin. Binance’s multi-assets documentation describes automatic exchange conditions. These are venue-specific mechanics, not a universal process; read the rules for your own account. Liquidation can also expose you to conversion prices, fees or execution conditions set by the venue.
Assess the issuer’s redemption promise and your access to it
Issuer redemption and exchange collateral treatment are separate. A redemption promise does not require a trading venue to accept a token, credit it at par or keep it eligible. Nor does an exchange’s acceptance guarantee that every holder can redeem directly with the issuer.

Check who can redeem and under what conditions
- Determine which holders can redeem directly, and whether access depends on geography, customer status or onboarding.
- Review any minimums, fees, timing and procedures that apply to redemption. Distinguish direct issuer redemption from selling the token on a secondary market.
- Consider whether you could complete the required transfer and redemption steps during the period in which you need liquidity.
The GENIUS Act defines a payment stablecoin around payment or settlement use, an issuer obligation to convert, redeem or repurchase for a fixed monetary amount, and a representation or reasonable expectation of stable value. Its statutory provisions address permitted reserves, redemption procedures and risk management. Those provisions do not by themselves establish identical rights for every token or holder, or require a venue to accept a token as margin.
Look beyond reserve headlines
Reserve reporting can inform an assessment of backing, but it is dated evidence about an issuer’s reported assets—not a guarantee of immediate redemption, uninterrupted liquidity or venue collateral credit.
Evaluate the reserve information
- Review reserve composition, liquidity, concentration and custody arrangements.
- Check whether assets are segregated and what the issuer reports about custodians and risk management.
- Note the date and nature of each report, including whether it is an attestation or an audit, and what period or point in time it covers.
Circle Internet Group, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K reported that approximately 88% of USDC reserves were held in the Circle Reserve Fund as of December 31, 2025. That figure is a dated issuer filing; it does not establish that all reserves are immediately available to every holder or determine how a venue values USDC as collateral.

In an April 4, 2025 statement, the SEC Division of Corporation Finance said that, for its scoped “Covered Stablecoin” category, “The assets held in the Reserve consist of USD and/or other assets that are considered low-risk and readily liquid so as to allow a Covered Stablecoin issuer to honor all redemptions on demand.” The statement’s category and scope matter; it should not be generalized to every stablecoin.

Plan for market and operational stress
A stablecoin’s market price, redemption access and venue collateral value can behave differently under stress. A token may trade away from its target, secondary-market depth may weaken, or transfers may be disrupted by chain or venue problems. At the same time, a venue may adjust haircuts or other collateral parameters. The cited venue documentation establishes that haircuts and collateral liquidation can apply; it does not establish a universal stress haircut or guarantee continuous market liquidity.
- Consider whether you could meet a margin call without relying on a single token, chain, venue or redemption route.
- Check whether deposits and withdrawals are available on the network you intend to use, and understand the venue’s process if transfers are delayed.
- Ask what happens to recognized collateral value if the token trades below its target, a price feed changes, or the venue changes its parameters.
- Keep enough operational flexibility to respond to conversion, withdrawal or liquidation rules—not only to an ordinary market-price move.
Account for jurisdiction and product-specific rules
Regulatory status is not a substitute for checking venue terms. The applicable rules can depend on the jurisdiction, product and entity involved.
On February 6, 2026, the CFTC described a revised staff no-action position for certain futures commission merchant requirements, including acceptance of qualifying non-securities digital assets as customer margin collateral. The release says staff reissued Letter 25-40 with a limited revision clarifying that a national trust bank may be an eligible issuer for that position. A staff no-action position has defined scope; it is not a blanket rule requiring every venue to accept every stablecoin.
Keep statutory requirements, proposed implementing rules, staff positions and a venue’s own collateral policy distinct. Each answers a different question, and none alone establishes the terms for your specific account.
Use a decision checklist before posting collateral
- Match the asset to the account. Confirm the token, network, product, account mode and jurisdiction are eligible.
- Calculate the recognized amount. Apply the venue’s current ratio or weight, haircut, price index, cap and concentration rules.
- Map liquidation and conversion. Identify the maintenance threshold, cross-account effects, asset sale or conversion order, and automatic exchange rules.
- Assess redemption access. Verify who can redeem directly, any conditions or costs, and whether that route is practical for you.
- Review reserves and custody. Read dated disclosures and identify what they establish—and what they do not establish—about liquidity and access.
- Stress the operational path. Consider peg deviations, thin secondary markets, transfer delays, venue outages and parameter changes.
- Recheck before trading. Venue parameters can change; confirm live terms rather than relying on a saved comparison or an example from documentation.
The European Central Bank reported in 2025 that around 80% of trades on crypto-asset trading platforms used stablecoins, up from 45% five years earlier. That is context about trading use, not a measure of how often stablecoins are pledged as collateral or proof that they are suitable for a particular margin account.
Is there one stablecoin that is best collateral?
No single stablecoin is established as the best collateral for every trader, venue and jurisdiction. The practical choice depends on the combination of issuer and reserve quality, redemption access, secondary-market liquidity, recognized collateral value, account limits, custody and legal protections, supported networks, and liquidation mechanics. Compare that full set for the account you will use rather than choosing on peg or headline ratio alone.
