SD-WAN architecture creates a centrally managed, policy-controlled overlay across one or more wide-area network transports. Edge devices forward traffic, while management and control functions configure the network and distribute routes and policies. The architecture is not one fixed design: topology, deployment form, transport choices, and who operates the network are separate decisions.
What SD-WAN architecture means
Software-defined wide-area networking (SD-WAN) applies software-defined networking concepts to connections between geographically distributed sites. Instead of treating each WAN circuit as an isolated path, an SD-WAN design can use policy and link measurements to choose how application traffic travels across available transports.

The network has two useful layers. The underlay is the underlying connectivity, such as Internet, MPLS, or mobile links. The overlay is the logical SD-WAN fabric established across those connections. WAN edge devices at branches, campuses, data centers, or cloud environments connect sites to that fabric and forward user traffic.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCentral configuration does not mean that all traffic must pass through a central controller. Control systems distribute topology, route, and policy information; edge devices use that information to forward packets. Whether traffic goes directly between sites or through a hub depends on the overlay topology and policy.

Which components make up the architecture?
A common conceptual model separates SD-WAN responsibilities into four planes. This is a way to understand functions, not a mandatory industry-wide component list: vendors may combine or divide them differently.
| Plane | Primary responsibility | What it does in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Orchestration | Authentication and onboarding | Helps establish trust and bring devices into the SD-WAN environment. |
| Management | Configuration and operations | Provides centralized configuration, monitoring, and maintenance functions. |
| Control | Topology, routes, and policy distribution | Builds and maintains the overlay view and communicates routing and policy information to edges. |
| Data | Packet forwarding | WAN edge devices move customer traffic across the selected paths. |
Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN is one vendor-specific example: its documentation names SD-WAN Manager for management, SD-WAN Controller for control, SD-WAN Validator for orchestration, and WAN Edge devices for forwarding. Cisco also describes Overlay Management Protocol (OMP) as carrying control information. These names and OMP are Cisco implementation details, not universal SD-WAN terms.

What are the main SD-WAN topology types?
Topology describes how sites connect in the overlay. The right choice depends on where traffic needs to go, where security or other services must be applied, and how much operational complexity the organization can support.
| Topology | How traffic is arranged | Useful when | Trade-offs to assess |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hub-and-spoke | Spoke sites send traffic through one or more hubs. | Sites need centralized access to shared services or a consistent inspection point. | Hub transit can add a path for branch-to-branch communication; assess latency, hub capacity, and resilience. |
| Full mesh | Sites can establish direct spoke-to-spoke paths. | Branches exchange substantial traffic directly and avoiding hub transit is valuable. | Assess scale, policy consistency, and the operational effort of supporting direct connectivity. |
| Regional or partial mesh | Some sites communicate directly while other traffic uses hubs or regional structures. | Traffic patterns or service locations differ by region or application. | More design choices can mean more policy and troubleshooting complexity; map the intended paths explicitly. |
These are design alternatives, not a ranking. A topology should reflect actual traffic flows and required inspection or service locations, rather than a presumption that all sites should use direct paths or that all traffic should be centralized.

How do deployment form and operating model differ?
Deployment form answers where the SD-WAN functions run. Operating model answers who configures, monitors, and supports them. They are independent choices: a particular hosting form does not determine who runs the service.
- Physical appliances: Hardware SD-WAN edges are installed on premises at sites.
- Virtual appliances: Virtualized edge functions can be used where a physical appliance is not the desired form.
- Cloud deployment: Components or connectivity can be deployed in cloud or multi-cloud environments; some designs combine cloud with a backbone approach.
- DIY operations: The organization configures and operates the environment itself.
- Managed service: A provider operates the service under an agreed responsibility model.
- Co-managed service: The organization and provider share operational responsibilities.
Fortinet’s architecture and deployment materials describe physical, virtual, and cloud options as well as DIY, managed, and co-managed models. The specific functions available and who is responsible for them depend on the selected implementation and service arrangement.

What is SD-WAN used for?
SD-WAN is used to connect distributed branches, campuses, data centers, and cloud environments, and to apply centrally defined policies to traffic across available WAN links. Common use cases include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Application-aware path selection: Apply policy to steer application traffic across available transports, taking link measurements and application requirements into account.
- SaaS and cloud access: Design paths for cloud and software-as-a-service traffic rather than assuming every flow must take the same route through a central site.
- Centralized visibility and operations: Use central configuration, monitoring, analytics, and troubleshooting functions where the implementation supports them.
- Segmentation and service insertion: Separate traffic or direct it through required security and network services as part of the design.
- Resiliency policies: Define how traffic should use alternate available paths when link conditions or policy warrant a change.
Cisco’s design guidance identifies cloud connectivity, application visibility and recognition, real-time service-level policy, SaaS optimization, analytics, troubleshooting, and resource planning as capabilities or use cases. These are vendor-described capabilities, not proof that every deployment will deliver a particular operational or performance result.

What does SD-WAN architecture mean for security?
An SD-WAN overlay can support security design, but the architecture label alone does not establish that a network is secure. Cisco’s security documentation describes authenticated control components and data-plane traffic carried in IPsec connections, with authentication, encryption, and integrity mechanisms. Exact features and implementation details are vendor-specific.
Evaluate the full design, including how devices are authenticated and onboarded, how policies and configurations are controlled, how segmentation is applied, how software is maintained, and where traffic inspection or other security services occur. A path-selection policy should also be checked against the required inspection path: a direct route may not satisfy a design that requires traffic to pass through a centralized service.
How to evaluate an SD-WAN design
Start with traffic and service requirements, then compare architecture choices against them. A useful evaluation should cover these independent dimensions:
- Map traffic flows. Identify which sites, applications, cloud environments, and shared services communicate, and where inspection or service insertion is required.
- Choose the overlay topology. Compare hub-and-spoke, full mesh, and regional or partial mesh against traffic volume, latency needs, scale, resilience, and operational complexity.
- Specify deployment form. Decide where physical, virtual, or cloud-hosted functions belong; do not confuse this with who will operate them.
- Define the operating responsibilities. Establish which party handles provisioning, configuration, monitoring, maintenance, and support in a DIY, managed, or co-managed arrangement.
- Set transport and path policies. Document available link types, application needs, how link conditions are measured, and what policy should do when a path is unsuitable or unavailable.
- Review security and operations together. Check authentication, encryption, segmentation, inspection paths, software maintenance, visibility, analytics, and troubleshooting requirements.
Vendor documentation can explain how a particular product implements these functions, but product names, features, compatibility, and licensing should be checked against the relevant release and service terms before they are used to finalize a design.
What SD-WAN does not guarantee
Centralized policy and multiple transports can provide tools for managing application paths, but they do not guarantee lower costs, better performance, or higher uptime. Outcomes depend on the underlying links, application behavior, traffic patterns, policies, security services, and quality of the implementation. A design should be evaluated against its own requirements rather than assumed to deliver a universal improvement.
