How to Evaluate Microsoft Stock: Earnings, Growth, and Valuation

A practical framework for assessing Microsoft stock: connect FY2026 earnings and Azure growth to capital spending, cash generation, risks and valuation assumptions.

Evaluate Microsoft (MSFT) by connecting three things: the profits it reports, the growth and investment needed to produce them, and the price investors pay for those results. Microsoft’s FY2026 results were strong, led by cloud growth, but capital spending, one-off earnings effects and the share price all matter to whether that performance supports a particular valuation. This is an analytical framework, not a buy-or-sell recommendation.

Start with reported earnings, not the stock narrative

Microsoft’s fiscal year ends June 30. Its FY2026 results cover the year ended June 30, 2026; the company released them on July 29, 2026. For the full year, Microsoft reported revenue of $331.8 billion, operating income of $155.2 billion, net income of $133.7 billion and diluted GAAP earnings per share (EPS) of $17.95. Revenue rose 18%, operating income 21%, net income 31% on a GAAP basis and diluted GAAP EPS 32% year over year. Microsoft’s FY2026 Q4 earnings release provides the reported results.

Use the same accounting basis when comparing periods. Microsoft also reports non-GAAP measures that adjust for specified items; those can help explain performance, but they are not interchangeable with GAAP results. For FY2026, the annual GAAP EPS figure is $17.95. The release’s available annual summary does not establish a corresponding non-GAAP dollar figure, so do not infer one from a growth rate.

Check whether earnings growth came from operations

Revenue, operating income and net income tell different parts of the story. Operating income tracks the profitability of Microsoft’s operations before interest and taxes; net income also reflects items such as investment gains and taxes. When net income or EPS grows faster than revenue, look for the drivers in the filing and earnings commentary rather than assuming the core business accelerated by the same amount.

That distinction was relevant in Q4. Microsoft reported a $3.2 billion gain from its Anthropic investment and said discrete items benefited quarterly EPS by $0.27 per diluted share compared with guidance. These items affect the interpretation of quarterly earnings and should not automatically be treated as recurring operating profit. For Q4, revenue was $90.0 billion and diluted GAAP EPS was $4.81; the company’s non-GAAP Q4 EPS was $4.74, reflecting its stated adjustments. See the earnings release and earnings-call transcript for the company’s figures and explanations.

Judge growth by its sources and durability

Microsoft Cloud was the main growth engine in FY2026. The company reported $214.4 billion in Microsoft Cloud revenue, up 27% for the year. Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 41% for FY2026 and 43% in Q4. In Q4, Microsoft Cloud revenue was $59.3 billion, also up 27%. These are company-defined measures covering multiple services; Azure’s growth rate is not a separately disclosed Azure revenue amount in the metrics table. The figures are in Microsoft’s FY2026 investor metrics.

Cloud is not the whole company. Microsoft’s FY2026 metrics report Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud revenue growth of 17%, LinkedIn growth of 11% and Dynamics 365 growth of 18%. In More Personal Computing, Windows OEM and devices declined 1%, while Xbox content and services declined 5%. These figures are the company’s reported year-over-year growth rates; consult the metrics table for the stated GAAP and constant-currency presentations where both are shown. The contrast helps explain why a company-wide result can be strong even when some product lines are flat or shrinking.

Treat contracted demand as a forward indicator, not as sales

At June 30, 2026, Microsoft’s commercial remaining performance obligations (RPO) were $678 billion, up 84% year over year. RPO represents contracted future revenue that has not yet been recognized; it is not current revenue, cash on hand or a guarantee that every dollar will arrive on a specific schedule. On the earnings call, management said roughly 30% was expected to be recognized over the next 12 months and gave a weighted average duration of 2.3 years. It also said RPO growth excluding OpenAI was 25%, highlighting how large commitments can affect the headline growth rate. See the earnings-call transcript and investor metrics.

Separate actual results from management’s forecast

Management’s FY2027 Q1 guidance included approximately 45% Azure revenue growth in constant currency. That is a forecast, not a reported result. Microsoft cautioned that quarterly growth can vary with capacity timing and contract mix, and said customer demand exceeded available capacity. Compare subsequent reported results with that guidance rather than blending the two into one growth figure. The company’s discussion is in the earnings-call transcript.

Ask whether growth is turning into cash

Growth in cloud and AI infrastructure takes capital. In FY2026, Microsoft generated $182.9 billion in cash from operations and used $139.5 billion in investing activities. Additions to property and equipment increased by $51.4 billion year over year. At year end, cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments totaled $76.8 billion. These figures are reported in Microsoft’s FY2026 Form 10-K.

Microsoft Cloud’s gross margin was 66% for FY2026 and 65% in Q4. Management attributed pressure to a mix shift toward Azure and investment in AI infrastructure and product usage, partly offset by efficiency gains. The key question is not simply whether spending is rising: it is whether the capacity being built supports durable revenue and attractive margins over time.

  • Track additions to property and equipment, depreciation and operating leases alongside cloud growth.
  • Watch operating cash flow and free cash flow over several years; a single investment-heavy year may not represent a lasting cash-generation level.
  • Compare cloud gross margins and overall operating margins with the pace of infrastructure spending.
  • Distinguish customer demand from realized returns: demand that exceeds capacity creates an opportunity, but the return depends on deployment, utilization and profitability.

How to assess Microsoft stock valuation

A valuation multiple is only meaningful when its price date, earnings denominator and assumptions are explicit. Microsoft’s FY2026 Form 10-K reports that the market value of common stock held by non-affiliates was $3.6 trillion as of December 31, 2025. That is a historical figure, not Microsoft’s current market capitalization or a current valuation input. The primary sources cited here do not establish an October 7, 2026 closing share price or a consensus forward EPS estimate. Obtain and date those inputs before calculating current multiples.

Valuation lens How to calculate it What it helps assess
Trailing price/earnings (P/E) Current share price divided by trailing 12-month diluted EPS. Identify whether EPS is GAAP or adjusted; using FY2026 GAAP EPS of $17.95 gives an annual-period denominator, not necessarily a trailing-12-month figure once newer results are available. What investors pay for a dollar of reported earnings. It is sensitive to the EPS basis and the date of the share price.
Forward P/E Current share price divided by a named, dated forward EPS estimate. State the estimate source and whether it is GAAP or adjusted. How price compares with expected earnings; estimates can change and are not reported results.
Enterprise value/operating income Enterprise value, incorporating market capitalization, debt and cash, divided by operating income for a clearly named period. A cross-check that accounts for capital structure rather than relying on equity value alone.
Price/free cash flow or enterprise value/free cash flow Price or enterprise value divided by free cash flow for the stated period, with the free-cash-flow definition made clear. How valuation relates to cash remaining after investment, including capital expenditure.

For Microsoft, read the cash-flow multiple in the context of data-center investment. Heavy capital expenditure can weigh on near-term free cash flow while the company builds capacity; that does not make the spending irrelevant or guarantee it will pay off. Compare cash generation across several years and examine whether margins, utilization and growth support the investment.

Is Microsoft stock overvalued?

There is no universally correct multiple that settles this question. Compare the valuation with growth rate and durability, operating and cloud gross margins, capital requirements and cash conversion. Historical ranges and relevant peers can add context, but only if the businesses and accounting bases are sufficiently comparable. Strong company results alone do not establish that a stock is attractive at every price. A defensible judgment needs a dated market price, a clearly specified earnings or cash-flow measure, and explicit assumptions about future growth and investment.

What could challenge the growth case?

  • Returns on infrastructure: rising capacity costs may not produce adequate returns. Follow capital spending, depreciation, leases, free cash flow and cloud margins against Azure growth.
  • Capacity and timing: management reported demand beyond available capacity, but quarterly growth can shift with deployment timing and contract mix.
  • Commitment concentration: total RPO growth was 84%, while management cited 25% growth excluding OpenAI. Both the headline and the concentration context matter when judging the durability of contracted demand.
  • Uneven business performance: cloud strength coexisted with declines in Windows OEM and devices and Xbox content and services.
  • Accounting effects: investment gains, tax effects and other discrete items can move GAAP results. Read reported statements and the company’s reconciliation rather than treating adjusted results as a replacement.
  • Valuation risk: a business can execute well while its shares still offer a weak prospective return if the price already assumes more growth or profitability than the company delivers.
