Evaluate China Construction Bank (CCB) by identifying the exact listing first, then checking earnings and margins, loan quality, reserves, capital, dividend status and valuation. CCB has separate Shanghai and Hong Kong listings, and the company’s latest cited results show operating and profit growth—but those historical results do not establish whether either listing is attractively priced today.
1. Identify which CCB listing you are evaluating
China Construction Bank shares trade on two markets: the Shanghai listing is 601939 and the Hong Kong listing is 939, according to CCB’s investor-relations page. These are separate securities with different market prices. Before calculating a valuation or yield, confirm the listing, ticker, trading currency and price date in your brokerage or market-data source.

This distinction matters because a dividend stated by CCB in renminbi per ten shares is not, by itself, a yield for either listing. A yield calculation needs a matching share price and consistent currency and share units. If converting currency, state the exchange rate and date used; do not mix a Shanghai quote with a Hong Kong quote or present the result as though it applied to both.

CCB’s company reports are useful for understanding the business, but an investor still needs a current price for the particular security being considered. The official materials cited here do not provide a timestamped market price, so they cannot support a current P/E, P/B, dividend yield or cheap-versus-expensive verdict.

2. Read the latest results as a starting point, not a forecast
CCB announced its 2026 interim results on 2026-08-28. For the first half of 2026, the company reported operating income of RMB 426.333 billion, up 10.48% year over year, and net profit of RMB 171.677 billion, up 5.56%. At 2026-06-30, assets were RMB 47.33 trillion, up 3.72% from year-end 2025. These are company-reported historical figures for specified periods, not forecasts. See the 2026 interim-results release.
Income grew faster than profit in that half-year. That difference is a reason to inspect the full income statement and profit drivers, not proof of a particular cause or a reliable forecast of future earnings. Check whether growth came from recurring banking activity, whether costs or impairment charges changed, and whether any one-off items affected the comparison. Use subsequent company results to see whether the first-half pattern persisted.
Separate interest income from other income
CCB reported first-half net interest income of RMB 310.958 billion, up 8.46% year over year, and net non-interest income of RMB 115.375 billion, up 16.31%. The split helps show which broad income streams contributed to reported growth. It does not tell you on its own whether each stream is durable: use the detailed report to examine what is included in non-interest income and how the components moved.
For a bank, also track net interest margin (NIM), which reflects the difference between interest earned on assets and interest paid on funding relative to the relevant asset base. CCB reported a first-half 2026 NIM of 1.37%, three basis points above 2025 and one basis point above 2026 Q1. The direction is worth monitoring, but one half-year reading cannot establish a long-term trend. Compare the same measure and reporting basis across later periods, and consider how lending rates, deposit costs, loan mix and asset yields may affect it.

Use a consistent period and accounting basis
When comparing CCB with its own past results or another bank, align the reporting period and accounting basis. A full-year figure should not be compared directly with a half-year figure as if they covered equal time. Likewise, make clear whether you are comparing year-over-year growth, a point-in-time balance-sheet ratio or an annualized measure. If you annualize a partial-year result, label it as an estimate rather than reported full-year performance.
3. Assess credit quality beyond the headline NPL ratio
At 2026-06-30, CCB reported a non-performing loan (NPL) ratio of 1.29%, down 0.02 percentage points from year-end 2025. Its allowance-to-NPL ratio was 238.69%, up 5.54 percentage points over the same comparison. Both figures are company-reported in the 2026 interim-results release.
The NPL ratio is a useful headline indicator, but it does not describe every loan that may become stressed or the amount of risk in each borrower group. A lower ratio is not a complete credit-risk conclusion. Read the 2026 Half-Year Report for loan mix, credit exposures and provision movements, then compare those disclosures with earlier periods. Look for changes in the composition of lending, concentrations, overdue or otherwise stressed exposures, and whether credit costs and provisions are moving in a way that fits the reported asset-quality trend.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe allowance-to-NPL ratio compares reported allowances with reported non-performing loans. It is not a guarantee that every future loss is covered: the ratio depends on classification, the allowances recognized and the loans included in the calculation. Read it alongside the report’s provisioning detail and definitions. Consider whether both the NPL measure and reserve coverage are stable or changing over time rather than treating a single period’s value as decisive.

Questions to ask in the report
- How are loans distributed across borrower types, industries and regions, and did the mix shift?
- What do the report’s disclosures show about overdue, restructured or otherwise higher-risk exposures?
- How did impairment charges and allowance balances change, and how does that movement relate to loan growth and asset-quality disclosures?
- Are reported NPL and reserve measures being compared on the same definitions and dates across periods?
These checks help distinguish a headline ratio from the underlying credit picture. If a report does not establish a detail you need, do not infer it from the NPL ratio alone.
4. Check capital as a loss-absorbing buffer
CCB reported a total capital adequacy ratio of 19.42% and a core tier-1 capital adequacy ratio of 14.24% at 2026-06-30. The company’s interim-results release gives the headline figures; the 2026 Half-Year Report contains the regulatory-capital detail.
Capital ratios are relevant because they indicate capital relative to risk-weighted exposures under the applicable regulatory framework. They are not interchangeable with cash on hand, and a single ratio does not show all constraints on a bank’s ability to absorb losses or distribute capital. Examine the definitions, movements, composition and regulatory disclosures in the report. Compare CCB with its own history and any peer bank using the same period and ratio definition; do not infer relative strength from figures calculated on different bases.

Dividend announcements have different statuses. CCB’s 2025 annual report proposed a final cash dividend of RMB 2.029 per ten shares, subject to shareholder approval. The 2026 Half-Year Report states that the 2025 annual shareholders’ meeting approved the 2025 profit distribution on 2026-06-26, and that total cash dividends for 2025 amounted to RMB 101.684 billion. The original proposal appears in the 2025 Annual Report; the later approval and total are recorded in the 2026 Half-Year Report.

Separately, on 2026-08-28 CCB proposed an interim 2026 cash dividend of RMB 2.010 per ten shares, tax inclusive. The results release said the proposal would be submitted to shareholders for deliberation; the Half-Year Report likewise describes it as awaiting shareholder consideration. Treat it as proposed in those cited documents, not as approved or paid. Check for a later company announcement before relying on its status.
CCB’s results release described the proposal this way: “To further enhance the sense of gain for the investors, the board of directors of CCB proposed to distribute an interim cash dividend of RMB 2.010 Yuan (tax inclusive) per 10 shares in 2026 to all common shareholders, with a total dividend of about RMB 52.582 billion and a dividend ratio increasing from 30.0% in 2025 to 31.0%, which will be submitted to the shareholders meeting for deliberation.” This is the company’s characterization of its proposal, not an independent assessment of future distributions. See the 2026 interim-results release.
Turn a dividend figure into a listing-specific yield carefully
A per-ten-share dividend is a cash amount tied to a stated share count; a yield requires dividing the applicable dividend per share by the share price for the exact listing and date. Before calculating, establish whether the dividend is approved, whether the amount is annual or interim, the relevant entitlement and payment details, the quote currency, and whether the share units match. Do not add a proposed payment to an approved dividend as if both were certain, and do not assume a past payout will recur.

A stated payout percentage is not a promise that the same percentage will apply in another period. Test whether the dividend is supported by earnings and whether the bank’s capital and regulatory disclosures are consistent with the distribution. The reports establish past and proposed amounts and statuses; they do not guarantee future dividends or determine an investor’s tax treatment.
Best Value
6. Value the exact share, rather than judging the company in isolation
A sound business can still be an unattractive investment at a sufficiently high price, while a low-looking multiple may reflect concerns about earnings, credit or growth. CCB’s operating figures and dividend record are inputs to valuation, not a valuation conclusion. The official materials cited here do not establish a timestamped price or peer multiples, so calculate current metrics only after obtaining reliable price data for the exact listing and date.
| Measure | How to use it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Price-to-book (P/B) | Share price divided by book value per share, using a consistent share basis and reporting date. | Compare with CCB’s own history and banks with comparable reporting periods; investigate whether differences relate to profitability, risk or other factors rather than treating a low multiple as proof of value. |
| Price-to-earnings (P/E) | Share price divided by earnings per share for a clearly identified earnings period. | State whether earnings are trailing, reported for a particular year, or otherwise defined. Do not substitute a half-year result for full-year earnings without clearly explaining any annualization. |
| Dividend yield | Applicable dividend per share divided by the matching listing’s share price. | Use only a clearly identified dividend status and period; distinguish approved amounts from proposals and identify the price date and currency. |
| Profitability | Compare measures such as return on equity (ROE) or return on assets (ROA) over aligned periods. | Use reported definitions and a consistent basis; interpret profitability alongside risk and capital rather than as a standalone quality score. |
| Operating and risk trends | Review NIM, earnings growth, NPLs, reserve coverage and capital ratios over time. | Compare the same period, definitions and reporting basis; a single favorable figure cannot establish a durable trend. |
The table gives a framework, not current CCB multiples: no live share price or sourced peer valuation is established by the cited materials. A calculation should state the security, market, price date, currency, financial period and formula. If using a peer comparison, use a consistent peer set and explain any differences in business mix or accounting basis that make the comparison imperfect.
7. A practical pre-investment sequence
- Choose the security. Confirm whether you mean Shanghai 601939 or Hong Kong 939 through CCB’s investor-relations page and your market-data source.
- Set the evidence date. Record the share price date and the latest financial reporting period you are using. Do not combine a current price with an old dividend or earnings figure without labeling the periods.
- Read the results release and full report. Use the 2026 interim-results release for headline operating figures and the 2026 Half-Year Report for detailed loan, provisioning and capital disclosures.
- Test earnings quality and direction. Separate net interest income from non-interest income, review NIM and profitability, and verify whether later reporting supports the half-year growth pattern.
- Examine credit and capital together. Consider asset-quality measures, loan composition, allowances and regulatory capital as related parts of the risk picture, not isolated pass/fail numbers.
- Confirm dividend status. Check the latest announcement for shareholder approval, payment details and any change since the proposal or report you are reading.
- Calculate valuation for that listing. With a dated price, calculate relevant price multiples and yield using matching currency, share units and financial periods. Compare with CCB’s own history and carefully selected peers on a consistent basis.
- Make the decision against your own constraints. Consider concentration, time horizon, currency exposure and tolerance for bank-sector risk. The company reports do not establish whether the investment suits an individual investor.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
CCB’s first-half 2026 results document growth in reported income and profit, a 1.37% NIM, and reported asset-quality and capital measures as of 2026-06-30. The dividend disclosures distinguish an approved 2025 distribution from a proposed interim 2026 payment. Together, those facts provide starting points for due diligence, but they do not supply a live listing-specific valuation or establish that either security is a buy. The decision depends on the price paid, the durability of earnings and distributions, and the risks visible in the detailed reports.
