A sharp drop in Cameco shares is not, by itself, evidence that the stock is cheap. To judge whether the investment case has weakened or the valuation has simply reset, check the exact share-price move, update operating and cash-flow assumptions, account for Cameco’s contracts and Westinghouse earnings, then compare the share price with a current valuation model. Cameco’s July 31, 2026 results showed both reasons for caution and factors that had not worsened at that reporting date; they do not establish a buy or sell signal.

What does the price drop tell you—and what does it leave unanswered?

A Yahoo Finance article published October 3, 2026, described Cameco shares as down 24% over three months. Treat that as the article’s characterization, not as a verified return calculation: the precise start and end dates, exchange, currency, closing prices, and treatment of dividends or other corporate actions were not independently established. Before relying on the percentage, reconstruct the move from exchange data.

Specify whether you mean NYSE-listed CCJ in U.S. dollars or TSX-listed CCO in Canadian dollars, and whether the comparison is peak-to-trough or over a defined period. Decide whether you are measuring closing-price return or total return. Then compare the same dates and currency against uranium spot and term-price indicators, other uranium equities, a broad-market index, and the CAD/USD exchange rate. Without a consistent comparison, it is difficult to tell whether Cameco-specific news, sector sentiment, currency movements, or a wider market repricing drove the decline.

A lower share price can reflect weaker expected business results, a lower valuation multiple applied to similar expectations, or both. The October 3 article suggested multiple compression alongside operating and Westinghouse concerns, but that is an interpretation, not a company-reported fact. The information summarized below does not establish a current P/E, EV/EBITDA, price-to-NAV, intrinsic value, or peer valuation. A price drop alone cannot fill that gap.

What Cameco’s July 2026 results show

Cameco’s Q2 2026 report and release, dated July 31, 2026, are a time-specific operating and financial snapshot. The reported results show why headline quarterly earnings can be misleading, while also providing concrete figures to check in an updated model. Adjusted net earnings and adjusted EBITDA are non-IFRS measures; read them alongside IFRS net earnings.

Area Company-reported figures How to read them
Consolidated earnings For Q2 2026, net earnings were C$25 million, adjusted net earnings C$77 million, and adjusted EBITDA C$391 million. For the first six months of 2026, the corresponding figures were C$156 million, C$281 million, and C$899 million. Management said quarterly and year-to-date results were lower than in 2025 primarily because of lower equity earnings from Westinghouse.
Uranium segment Q2 2026 earnings before tax were C$170 million and adjusted EBITDA C$252 million, versus C$281 million and C$352 million, respectively, in Q2 2025. For the first half of 2026, the figures were C$528 million and C$676 million, compared with C$509 million and C$641 million in the first half of 2025. Cameco attributed quarter-to-quarter comparisons to normal delivery variation and lower planned 2026 sales delivery volumes under its contracting strategy. The first-half and quarterly comparisons tell different stories.
Westinghouse contribution Cameco’s share of Westinghouse adjusted EBITDA was C$163 million in Q2 2026 versus C$352 million a year earlier, and C$284 million in the first half of 2026 versus C$445 million in the first half of 2025. These are company-reported adjusted measures. Q2 2025 included an unusually large Dukovany reactor construction project contribution; the report associated about US$170 million of Cameco’s share of Westinghouse revenue and adjusted EBITDA with that project. Do not assume an unusually strong project contribution recurs on the same schedule.
Uranium production 2026 attributable uranium-segment production guidance was 19.5–21.5 million pounds of U3O8. Cameco’s share of Q2 production was 3.9 million pounds. Guidance was unchanged in the July 31 update despite difficult spring road conditions and temporary disruptions at Key Lake/McArthur River and Cigar Lake. It was guidance as of that date, not a guarantee against later changes.
Inventory and purchases At June 30, 2026, inventory was 8.7 million pounds at an average cost of C$58.05 per pound. Q2 purchases were 2.8 million pounds at an average C$91.40 per pound (US$66.60 per pound). Mined production is only part of delivery economics. Inventory cost and the price and timing of third-party purchases can affect margins and cash needs.
Contracting and outlook Cameco reported contracts for average annual uranium deliveries above 28 million pounds over the following five years, with higher-than-average commitments in 2026–2028 and lower-than-average commitments in 2029–2030. Its 2026 outlook estimated an average realized uranium price of C$91–C$96 per pound, uranium revenue of C$2.70–C$2.91 billion, fuel services revenue of C$610–C$650 million, and consolidated revenue of C$3.32–C$3.57 billion. The delivery and revenue figures are company statements and estimates, not guaranteed results. Cameco said it planned to add volumes selectively using market-related pricing mechanisms.
Liquidity and debt At June 30, 2026, Cameco reported C$1.1 billion in cash, C$1.0 billion in total debt, and an undrawn C$1.0 billion revolving credit facility. Use updated balance-sheet figures when assessing enterprise value, financing flexibility, and resilience to operational or market changes.

For context, Cameco said the prior-year Q2 included an unusually large Westinghouse contribution associated with the Dukovany project. That makes a year-over-year earnings decline less informative unless you separate recurring operating trends from project timing. Likewise, a single quarter of uranium deliveries may not represent a steady run rate.

How to assess whether the decline changed the investment case

  1. Verify the move. Use exchange price history for the chosen security and dates. Record the currency, start and end prices, whether the calculation uses closing prices, and whether distributions are included. If comparing CCJ with CCO or with a benchmark, align dates and account for currency.
  2. Rebuild the operating outlook. Compare current company guidance with the assumptions in your prior estimate: attributable production, realized uranium prices, delivery volumes, costs, capital spending, and any purchases required to meet delivery commitments. Separate actual results from management estimates, and check whether any company update after July 31 changed the outlook.
  3. Model the contract book rather than spot alone. Cameco sells through a portfolio of contracts, so a move in the spot uranium price does not translate immediately or one-for-one into its realized price or earnings. Examine spot and term indicators alongside contract delivery schedules, market-related pricing mechanisms, realized prices, inventory, and purchased material. The reported higher commitments in 2026–2028 and lower commitments in 2029–2030 make the timing and pricing of future replacement contracts relevant.
  4. Test production and costs. Track Cigar Lake and McArthur River/Key Lake against guidance, including disruptions, transportation and milling dependencies, unit costs, sustaining and development capital, and the amount of purchased uranium needed for deliveries. A production target can remain unchanged while operational risks still warrant monitoring.
  5. Separate Westinghouse from uranium operations. Assess Cameco’s uranium and fuel-services businesses independently from its equity-accounted Westinghouse investment. Compare Westinghouse contributions across periods and distinguish ordinary earnings from large project-related contributions. A strong or weak quarter at Westinghouse should not be mistaken for a direct change in uranium production economics.
  6. Update the balance sheet and valuation. For a current valuation, refresh the share price, shares outstanding, cash, debt, minority and equity interests, and the latest earnings and cash-flow estimates. Then test more than one valuation approach and scenarios for uranium prices, production, cost inflation, contract renewals, and Westinghouse. Do not infer undervaluation just because the shares are below a prior high.

How to compare Cameco with another producer

Use matching dates, currencies, and definitions when comparing Cameco with another uranium producer or its own past valuation. One quarter is especially unsuitable for a simple earnings-multiple comparison if delivery timing or project contributions differ. Compare the businesses across these dimensions:

  • Contract coverage, pricing mechanisms, and delivery obligations.
  • Production reliability, attributable output, mine and mill profile, and cost position.
  • Exposure to spot versus term prices and the lag before price changes affect realized revenue.
  • Inventory, third-party purchase requirements, and working-capital demands.
  • Balance-sheet strength, capital spending, and operational or project risks.
  • Non-uranium earnings contributions, including Westinghouse, kept separate from uranium operations.
  • Valuation against normalized through-cycle earnings, cash flow, or asset value rather than a single quarter.

What a responsible conclusion can—and cannot—say

The July 2026 company update reported unchanged production guidance and substantial contracting activity, while also showing lower year-over-year quarterly results that were influenced by delivery variability and a difficult comparison for Westinghouse earnings. Those facts can inform an updated scenario analysis, but they do not determine whether Cameco is attractively valued at a particular share price. No date-verified valuation multiple or independently reconstructed return series is established here, so a conclusion that the stock is cheap—or a specific buy or sell recommendation—would require additional current market and financial inputs.
