Retail stores use cameras with computer-vision software to turn views of shelves, aisles, entrances, and checkout areas into signals such as likely stock gaps, estimated shopper counts, movement patterns, and queue length. The camera captures the scene; AI and connected software interpret it and can route alerts or summary metrics to store teams. These systems estimate what is visible—they do not provide a perfect inventory count or reveal what shoppers intend to do.
How camera-based retail analytics works
A typical setup combines cameras aimed at specific store areas with a computer-vision model and software that turns detections into operational events or measurements. Depending on the design, video may be analyzed on an in-store edge device, with derived data sent onward for cloud analytics. AWS describes a reference architecture using PoE cameras connected to an on-premises Panorama device, alongside downstream streaming and storage components (AWS retail reference architecture).

What the system sees and sends
The model may detect people, products, shelf states, or activity. Software then converts those detections into outputs such as a likely shelf gap, a traffic count, or an alert for staff. A camera is only the visual input: it does not itself confirm stock levels, update inventory, or dispatch an employee. Those actions depend on the analytics, integrations, and store workflows connected to it.

What stores can measure
Shelf analytics and shopper-traffic analytics use cameras for different operational questions. A shelf-facing view focuses on product presence and placement; a broader aisle or entrance view focuses on people and movement. AWS lists use cases including aisle traffic, customer movement, shelf and product interaction, checkout queues, loss-prevention patterns, and inventory management (AWS).

Shelves and product availability
A shelf-monitoring system can flag a likely low-stock or out-of-stock condition, a misplaced product, or another shelf state for an associate to inspect. This is a prompt to check and act, not proof that the store has no units elsewhere: back-room inventory and the accuracy of stock records are separate matters.
Traffic, dwell, and queues
Traffic analytics can estimate how many people pass through a view, how they move between areas, how long they remain in a zone, or how busy a checkout queue appears. Those measures can help a retailer understand congestion or compare activity across areas. They cannot, by themselves, establish why someone stopped, whether a display caused a purchase, or what an individual shopper wanted.

| Sam’s Groceria, described by UST | UST says it installed 15 smart cameras at each store to gather shopper headcounts, customer flow, dwell times in store areas, and on-shelf inventory. It reports a 25% reduction in operational costs, a 20% increase in sales and reduction in shrinkage, and a 15% improvement in employee productivity. | These are UST case-study claims; the page does not state a year. The grouped wording about a 20% sales increase and shrinkage reduction should not be treated as two separately verified causal effects. UST case study. |
| Conad Superstore in Sorbolo, described by VusionGroup | VusionGroup says the store installed 100 shelf cameras for its Captana monitoring solution. The case describes improved associate visibility into shelf conditions and out-of-stocks. | The source identifies the retailer location and solution, but its benefits are a vendor case description, not an independent measurement. The page does not state a year. VusionGroup case study. |
| AiFi, in a Microsoft customer story | Microsoft’s story, dated April 13, 2026, describes AiFi’s platform turning camera data into queryable, real-time intelligence. Examples include monitoring shelf availability and helping an apparel retailer see which displays attracted engagement and foot traffic during a Black Friday test. It reports a 25–40% reduction in shrink as an AiFi client outcome. | The outcome is company-reported. The story does not establish that the result will recur in another retailer’s stores. | Three-store pilot, described by orionic | orionic reports claimed improvements in restocking delay and on-shelf availability. | The retailer is not named on the page, and the results are vendor claims. orionic case study. |
What a retailer should evaluate before deployment
A useful system depends on more than image recognition. Coverage, the question being measured, data handling, integrations, and on-the-ground performance all affect whether camera signals become practical store operations.

Coverage and placement
Check whether views actually include the shelf faces, entrances, aisles, or queues that matter. Blind spots, lighting, camera angle, and shoppers blocking products or one another can change what a system can detect. A deployment designed for shelf gaps is not automatically suitable for counting entrance traffic.
Measurement and processing
Specify the output the store needs—such as shelf gaps, product placement, traffic estimates, movement, or queue conditions—rather than treating “AI cameras” as one interchangeable capability. Compare whether analysis happens on an in-store edge device or in the cloud, whether raw footage is retained, and what derived data is transmitted.

Integration, validation, and ongoing work
Find out whether alerts reach associates in a usable workflow and whether the platform connects appropriately to inventory or store-management systems. Validate detection performance in the actual store before relying on it; installation, network requirements, maintenance, staff time, and total operating cost also matter. Vendor-reported accuracy or business results should not be assumed to transfer to a new location without a local pilot.

A PoE security camera or PoE network camera can be a video input to a retail computer-vision setup; AWS’s reference architecture uses PoE cameras. That does not make a consumer camera a complete inventory or traffic analytics system. The camera must be compatible with the analytics platform and the store’s coverage, integration, and privacy requirements.

Privacy, identification, and legal obligations
Video may be personal data depending on what is captured and how it is processed. Stores should define the purpose for collection, provide appropriate notice, control access, set retention and security practices, and review the rules that apply in their jurisdiction. Aggregate traffic measurement should not be casually described as identifying individual shoppers.
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) surveillance guidance covers public- and private-sector organizations processing personal data through CCTV and more advanced AI-based surveillance. It emphasizes fairness, accountability, transparency, and data protection by design. The live guidance page says it is under review following changes made by the UK Data (Use and Access) Act, so organizations should check the current guidance when assessing a UK deployment (ICO video-surveillance guidance).
For the EU, the European Data Protection Board’s April 2026 summary says GDPR applies to video surveillance and discusses lawfulness, transparency, and disclosure. It cautions that people may not expect security footage to be reused for marketing or employee monitoring. This is EU GDPR guidance, not a universal statement of law for every country (EDPB summary).

Counting anonymous traffic or detecting shelf conditions does not require facial recognition. Facial recognition analyzes facial features to create biometric templates. The ICO says processing biometric data to uniquely identify people requires both a UK GDPR lawful basis and an applicable special-category condition; its checklist calls for a data-protection impact assessment and documented justification. The ICO notes that this guidance is also under review (ICO facial-recognition guidance).
