Then test whether growth is durable by examining operating income, cash generation, customer acceptance, supplier and capacity constraints, debt, and the gap between reported results and management forecasts. Broadcom’s latest reported quarter shows rapid AI semiconductor growth, but that alone does not establish how sustainable the growth is or whether the stock is attractively valued.
What are Broadcom’s AI and VMware businesses?
Broadcom reports two segments: Semiconductor Solutions and Infrastructure Software. AI accelerators and networking belong to the semiconductor side; VMware products, including VCF, sit within Infrastructure Software. They are linked by Broadcom’s broader AI strategy, but their revenue drivers and execution risks differ. Semiconductor growth depends in part on customer programs, manufacturing capacity, and suppliers. Software performance depends in part on product competitiveness, licensing, renewals, and customer acceptance of the transition to subscription licensing.

Broadcom’s FY2025 annual report recorded $63.887 billion in net revenue: $36.858 billion from Semiconductor Solutions and $27.029 billion from Infrastructure Software. These are full-year segment figures, not a breakdown of the latest quarter. (Broadcom, 2025 Annual Report on Form 10-K, filed December 18, 2025.)

Broadcom’s Q3 FY2026 ended August 2, 2026, and its results release was dated September 2, 2026. The release reported $29.591 billion of consolidated revenue, up 86% year over year. AI semiconductor revenue was $16.7 billion, up 221% year over year and 54% quarter over quarter. These figures show exceptionally rapid reported AI semiconductor growth in that quarter; they do not by themselves show how much came from each customer, how repeatable the growth will be, or whether production can keep pace.

Do not compare FY2025 annual segment revenue directly with a single quarter as if the periods were equivalent. The cited Q3 release reports consolidated and AI semiconductor figures, but the segment split for the quarter is not stated in the cited figures. The FY2025 10-K and Q3 FY2026 release answer different questions: one supplies a detailed annual segment mix, while the other shows recent consolidated and AI semiconductor momentum.
How should you evaluate the AI semiconductor business?
Test the source and breadth of demand
Broadcom attributed AI semiconductor growth to demand for custom AI accelerators and networking. CEO Hock Tan said in the September 2, 2026 results release: “Demand for our custom AI accelerators and networking continues to be very strong. Q3 AI semiconductor revenue of $16.7 billion grew 221% year-over-year, and 54% quarter-over-quarter,” (Broadcom, Q3 FY2026 results release, September 2, 2026.) This is management’s description of demand. To assess durability, look for subsequent reported quarters and evidence that demand is distributed across customers and programs rather than relying on a narrow set of large opportunities.
Check whether suppliers and capacity can deliver
Strong orders do not automatically become shipments or revenue. Broadcom’s FY2025 filing identifies risks involving demand timing and volume, contract manufacturing and reliance on a limited number of suppliers, manufacturing capacity and quality, and its ability to continue winning semiconductor business. These are risks identified by the company, not evidence that a particular disruption has occurred. When evaluating later results, look for signs that supply, packaging, capacity, and quality are keeping pace with customer demand.

Revenue growth is only one part of the semiconductor case. Compare segment operating income and margins across periods, and keep GAAP results separate from any non-GAAP measure. Check whether operating income grows alongside revenue and whether the company explains meaningful changes in costs or mix. The figures cited here do not establish a Q3 semiconductor segment margin or operating-income result, so they cannot settle that question.
How should you evaluate VMware and Infrastructure Software?
Separate reported revenue from customer behavior
Broadcom’s FY2025 filing said Infrastructure Software growth was primarily due to strong VCF demand. It described revenue that included license revenue under certain non-terminable contracts and a transition to a subscription license model. Those details matter: revenue recognition under particular contract terms and a shift in licensing model are not, on their own, proof of renewal rates, realized pricing, or broad customer satisfaction.
Assess the software business by looking for evidence of renewals, customer retention or churn, subscription economics, realized pricing, and adoption of VCF. The reviewed official company materials do not establish an independent renewal or churn rate. Broadcom’s FY2025 filing also identifies software customer acceptance, virtualization demand, compatibility, licensing agreements, product lifecycle management, and competitiveness as risks to monitor.

Treat VMware’s AI positioning as a company claim
Broadcom introduced VMware Private AI Cloud in August 2026 and positions VCF as a platform for deploying and governing AI workloads on private infrastructure. These are Broadcom’s product and positioning statements, not independent evidence of customer outcomes. Evaluate the offering through customer adoption and other verifiable evidence rather than treating promised cost, security, or deployment benefits as proven results. What do cash flow and debt add to the analysis?
Broadcom reported $14.2 billion in cash from operations in Q3 FY2026. After $0.5 billion in capital expenditures, it reported $13.7 billion in free cash flow, equal to 46% of revenue. This is a strong cash-conversion figure for that quarter, but one quarter should not be treated as a guaranteed recurring rate. Compare cash from operations and free cash flow over multiple periods, alongside capital expenditures and the factors that influence working capital.
Also assess debt service capacity and cash allocation. Broadcom’s FY2025 filing identifies debt service and integration and acquisition risks. The relevant question is whether cash generation remains sufficient to support obligations and the company’s stated priorities under less favorable operating conditions—not simply whether a single quarter produced substantial free cash flow.

How should you handle Broadcom’s forward guidance?
For Q4 FY2026, Broadcom’s September 2, 2026 release projected $34.8 billion in consolidated revenue and $21.7 billion in AI semiconductor revenue. These are management forecasts, not completed-period results. Keep forecasts in a separate column from reported figures when updating an analysis, then compare the eventual reported results with the original outlook. A thesis that depends heavily on guidance is more exposed to execution and demand uncertainty than one supported by several periods of reported performance.

- Software acceptance: What evidence supports renewals, customer retention, subscription economics, and VCF competitiveness?
- Balance sheet: Can cash generation support debt service and other cash-allocation priorities?
- Evidence quality: Which parts of the case rely on completed results, and which depend on management forecasts or vendor product claims?
Broadcom’s FY2025 filing also lists competition, customer losses, integration, acquisition, and other business and regulatory risks. A company risk disclosure identifies issues that could matter; it does not establish that a risk has materialized or quantify its likelihood.

What this evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The reported figures establish that Broadcom delivered rapid AI semiconductor growth in Q3 FY2026, generated substantial cash in that quarter, and recorded significant annual revenue in both segments during FY2025. The filing attributes Infrastructure Software growth primarily to VCF demand, including revenue tied to certain non-terminable contracts and the subscription transition. Together, these facts provide a starting point for evaluating the businesses, not a complete forecast of their future performance.
The figures and company descriptions cited here do not provide an independent valuation, establish current fair value, or support a buy-or-sell conclusion. Those judgments require additional analysis of valuation, later reported results, customer and renewal evidence, and the risks relevant to each business.
