To evaluate an AI assistant’s privacy, check the exact product, account type, and settings you use—not just whether the provider says it trains on your data. Model improvement, safety review, retention, deletion, and administrator controls are separate questions, and a setting that changes one may not change the others. The comparison below reflects official guidance available on October 7, 2026; confirm the current notice and controls for your own account.
Start with the account and service you actually use
A provider can have different rules for a personal app, a managed work or school workspace, and an API. Before assessing a privacy promise, identify the specific service and who manages the account. A business administrator or contract may determine settings that an individual user cannot change.

- OpenAI: ChatGPT consumer controls vary with plan, account, and workspace settings. OpenAI says ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare workspaces, and the API Platform are not used to train models by default unless the organization opts in. - Anthropic: Claude consumer guidance and commercial/API terms are distinct. Check whether you use a consumer account, a commercial workspace, or the API; an API retention arrangement does not automatically describe Claude’s consumer app. See Anthropic’s consumer retention guidance and API retention documentation.
- Google: Gemini Apps guidance distinguishes personal accounts, work or school accounts, and signed-out use. A work or school administrator may control activity settings; Google’s general Privacy Policy applies when Gemini Apps are used signed out. Consult the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
For any service, note the product name, account type, region if the notice makes it relevant, and date you checked the policy. If you cannot establish that the notice covers your exact product or account, treat the answer as unconfirmed rather than assuming the most favorable terms apply.

Read the rule for your account and the exceptions around it. “Not used for training” does not necessarily mean the service does not process the content to answer you, protect the service, investigate safety issues, or handle feedback.

Look for the scope of the training choice: does it cover prompts, uploaded files, voice inputs, coding sessions, connected-app content, and feedback? The cited policies describe some distinctions and exceptions, but do not establish a universal inventory of every input type for every feature. Check the notice for the feature you use.
What else can happen to a conversation?
Separate ordinary service processing from model improvement. A provider may process content to generate a response, secure the service, or investigate a flagged interaction even when a training control is off. Human review is a distinct consideration: check whether reviewers may see the conversation, why review occurs, and how long reviewed material or related records can be retained.
- OpenAI: Its consumer guidance says content may be shared with service providers for service, annotation, and safety purposes under confidentiality and security obligations. It says chat content is not shared for marketing or advertising. Temporary chats may be retained for safety for up to 30 days. OpenAI consumer data guidance
- Anthropic: Safety-flagged conversations are an exception to the ordinary consumer model-improvement setting. Feedback can cause the full related conversation to be retained for up to five years, with de-linking described by Anthropic. Anthropic training guidance
- Google: Google says chats may still be used to respond and protect Google, users, and the public even with Keep Activity off or in temporary chats, including with help from human reviewers. Feedback may include recent context and submitted content. Gemini Apps Privacy Hub
When reviewing a policy, distinguish routine processing from exceptional review, and both from use in model improvement. A single “training off” control should not be read as “nothing is retained or reviewed.”

How long do you store my data?
Find separate time limits for active history, deleted content, temporary chats, feedback, human-reviewed conversations, safety flags, and API requests. A number in a retention policy applies to the specific category and account described—not automatically to every copy or processing purpose.

For Anthropic’s consumer limits, the page is dated July 1, 2026. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub was last updated September 24, 2026, and its notice is dated June 29, 2026. Retention terms can change; use the linked live notice to verify the current rule.
Does deleting a chat erase data already used for training?
Deletion from chat history, deletion from backend storage, removal from a training pipeline, and changing what a future model learns are different outcomes. Check which of these the policy promises and whether an exception applies.

- OpenAI: Cleared consumer chats are generally deleted within 30 days, subject to the exceptions above. The cited consumer guidance does not establish that deleting a chat reverses model training already completed. OpenAI consumer guidance
- Anthropic: Turning model improvement off prevents future model training from previous or new chats, but does not remove data from training already underway or from models already trained. Before relying on deletion, check whether the action covers the conversation itself, attachments, feedback, reviewer copies, safety records, and data already used in improvement. The cited policies do not make those categories interchangeable.

Read each control’s documented effect instead of inferring privacy from its name. A temporary mode may change history or training use while leaving short-term safety processing intact; an activity setting may control future improvement use without preventing response or safety processing.
OpenAI temporary chat
OpenAI says temporary chats stay out of chat history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary. They may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Saving a temporary chat converts it into an ordinary history chat. See OpenAI’s consumer guidance.

Anthropic Incognito and model-improvement settings
Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. The general consumer setting and the Incognito exception are separate rules; feedback and safety-flagged conversations also have their own handling. See Anthropic’s training guidance.
Google Keep Activity and temporary chats
With Keep Activity off and no feedback submitted, Google says it does not use future chats to improve AI models. Temporary chats are not used to train Google AI models. Neither control prevents processing to respond and protect users; chats may be retained with the account for 72 hours for those purposes. See the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
What changes for workspaces and API use?
For organizational use, review the contract, admin console, and technical integration together. “Not used for training by default” is only one part of the arrangement; retention, endpoints, administrator access, and exceptions still matter.

- OpenAI: The provider says business data is not used for training by default. Enterprise, Healthcare, and Edu admins control retention; Business has separate retention details. API inputs and outputs may be retained for up to 30 days except for certain endpoints and features, and zero data retention is available for eligible use cases. OpenAI also reports AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit, role/access controls, a SOC 2 Type 2 audit, and a Data Processing Addendum for stated services. - Anthropic: The API documentation says content is not retained by default except for specified cases, including covered models requiring 30-day retention, and retained data is not used for training without express permission. Zero data retention applies only to qualifying endpoints, eligible features, and organizations; under that arrangement, prompts and responses are not stored at rest after the response. - Google work or school accounts: An administrator may control work or school activity settings. Check the administrator’s applicable rules and the service terms for that organization rather than assuming personal-account controls apply. Gemini Apps Privacy Hub
These points are not a legal determination that a service is suitable for regulated or confidential information. Confirm the specific contract, jurisdiction, use case, and configuration with the responsible organization or adviser.
A practical policy-evaluation checklist
- Identify the scope. Record the exact assistant, app or API, account type, plan, workspace, and administrator. Verify that the privacy notice covers that configuration.
- Inventory what you send. Check how the policy treats prompts, files, voice, coding sessions, connected-app content, and feedback. Do not assume a rule for text chats also covers every feature.
- Read the model-improvement rule and exceptions. Establish whether use is on by default, opt-in, controlled by a setting, or affected by safety flags or feedback. Note whether the control applies prospectively.
- Separate purposes. Write down the stated rules for answering requests, security and safety review, human review, service-provider access, and model improvement. They may have different triggers and time limits.
- Map retention by category. Find separate periods for ordinary chats, deleted chats, temporary use, feedback, human-reviewed data, safety records, and API requests. Capture any legal, security, or policy exceptions.
- Test what deletion means on paper. Determine whether deletion removes content from history, backend storage, reviewer records, training pipelines, or models already trained. If the policy does not say, mark that effect as not established.
- Inspect account controls. Review the live settings for training or improvement, temporary chat, activity, memory, and account deletion. For a managed account, ask the administrator which controls are enforced centrally.
- For work or API use, verify the agreement. Check retention by endpoint and feature, any zero-data-retention eligibility, opt-in terms, admin access, and documented exceptions.
- Save the policy version and date. Recheck when the service, account, or settings change; the links in this guide point to provider notices that may be updated.
What to do if the policy does not answer your question
Do not fill a gap with a neighboring product’s rule or a broad marketing statement. Ask the provider or workspace administrator for the answer tied to your exact product and account, especially for data types, reviewer access, deletion from training pipelines, and API endpoint coverage. Until clarified, treat an unaddressed effect as unknown rather than as a promise that the data is excluded.
