An announced release date is a plan, not a guarantee. Before paying, identify exactly what is being sold, separate what you can play now from what is promised for later, and check the refund rules for your storefront, region, and edition. If the remaining uncertainty or the cancellation terms are unacceptable, wait for launch and independent player feedback.
First, identify what kind of purchase it is
“Pre-order,” “Early Access,” and “early access” can describe different delivery states. The label affects what you can play at checkout, what remains uncertain, and how refunds work.

These distinctions come from Steam’s Early Access documentation and Steam’s Advance Access guidance. A game being available to play does not mean it is finished, and an early-play benefit is not the same thing as buying an Early Access product.
Judge evidence you can see now
Start with the present product, not the most ambitious version described in a trailer or roadmap. A practical check is to look for sustained gameplay footage, a demo or playtest if one is available, and a clear description of what is playable now. Check which platforms and features are actually included at launch.

- Playable evidence: Does a demo, playtest, or Early Access build let you see the game in motion? If footage is promotional, treat it as evidence of a slice of play—not proof that the slice represents the full game.
- Current versus planned: Make two lists: what is playable or included today, and what is announced for later. Put roadmap items, target dates, and promised additions in the second list.
- Specificity: Look for concrete information about the current build and platforms, rather than relying on broad promises about future features.
For Early Access, Valve advises customers to buy based on the game’s current state, not on promises of a future that may not be realized. Its guidance also cautions developers against promising an exact finish date or guaranteeing that planned additions will happen. A roadmap can explain intent; it cannot establish delivery.
Assess the release date without guessing at the odds
Note whether the store lists a specific date or a broad release window, whether the date has changed, and whether recent official updates explain the schedule. These are useful facts for your decision, but they do not produce a reliable probability that a particular game will launch on time.

A 2022 study, An Empirical Study of Delayed Games on Steam, analyzed 23,485 Steam games to examine release-date delays: the study record. That sample establishes that delays have been studied; the available description does not provide a delay rate. Do not turn the sample size into a prediction about a specific title.

Compare an edition’s extra price with the benefit it names. Earlier play, cosmetic items, and bundled content are different kinds of value, and their worth depends on whether you want them. Ask whether you would still buy the game at that price if the bonus were removed.

Steam’s Advance Access guidance notes that early play may be a poor fit for some games, including narrative single-player games and titles where an early competitive advantage affects other players. On Steam, Advance Access playtime also counts toward the two-hour refund limit. Treat the earlier start as a paid benefit only if it is worth both its price and the time it uses under the refund rules.
Check cancellation and refund terms before paying
Refund rights depend on the store, region, product, and timing. Read the current policy for the exact purchase rather than assuming another platform’s rules apply.

Steam
Valve’s Steam Refunds policy says eligible games can be refunded when the request meets the applicable return period and the game has less than two hours of play. For an unplayable pre-purchase, a refund may be requested any time before release; after release, the standard 14-day and under-two-hour conditions apply. Pre-purchase playtime, including Advance Access, counts toward the two-hour limit. Steam’s pre-purchase support FAQ also describes refunds before release and the post-release conditions. Eligibility depends on the transaction and applicable terms; check the policy when you buy.
PlayStation Store in the United States
The cited US PlayStation Store pre-order policy distinguishes orders placed more than 14 days before release from those placed 14 days or less before release. For the former, cancellation may be requested before release if the main product has not begun downloading or streaming. For the latter, the policy describes a 14-day period from payment, with the same download-or-streaming condition. Auto-download can start delivery, so check that setting as well as the order date. This summary is specific to the US policy; do not assume it applies in other regions or at other retailers.

Local consumer rights
Store rules may coexist with statutory rights. The cited PlayStation policy notes that local law can provide additional rights; this is not a jurisdiction-specific legal assessment. Check the rules that apply where you live if they affect your decision.

Before checkout, answer these questions for the specific game and edition:
- What can I actually play or verify today, and which important features exist only in future plans?
- Would I still want the game if some announced features were absent or arrived later?
- Is the price affordable to have tied up if the release moves or the finished game differs from expectations?
- What does the more expensive edition add, and is that benefit worth its cost to me?
- What exact cancellation or refund conditions apply to this storefront, region, and edition?
- Would waiting for release and independent player feedback give me information I value more than an early-play bonus?
If the answers leave you relying mainly on promises, or the refund terms do not protect you in a way you are comfortable with, waiting is a valid choice.
