Align Technology’s latest results show two different growth stories: Invisalign-led Clear Aligner revenue rose, while Imaging Systems and CAD/CAM Services revenue fell. That split, together with lower revenue per case in fiscal 2025 and a wide gap between recent GAAP and non-GAAP operating margins, is central to evaluating the stock. ALGN’s valuation snapshot below is dated October 2, 2026; it is a starting point for testing assumptions, not a standalone buy-or-sell signal.
What Align Technology sells and how it makes money
Align Technology designs and sells Invisalign clear aligners and Vivera retainers, as well as iTero intraoral scanners and services and exocad CAD/CAM software. Its fiscal reporting groups these activities into two segments:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Segment | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Clear Aligner | Comprehensive and non-comprehensive treatment packages, plus non-case revenue such as retainers, training, professional adjustment tools, and selected accessories. Align says Invisalign remains its majority revenue stream. (Align Technology 2025 Form 10-K) |
| Systems and Services | Scanner systems and wand upgrades, lease and pre-owned scanner revenue, subscriptions, disposables, pay-per-scan services, and exocad software. (Align Technology 2025 Form 10-K) |
The two segments have different demand drivers. Aligner revenue depends in part on case volume, revenue per case, product and geographic mix, and discounting. Scanner and software revenue is also affected by system placements, scanner pricing, and the mix of purchases, leases, rentals, and certified pre-owned equipment.

Align’s fiscal 2025 results showed modest company-wide growth, with Clear Aligner cases rising faster than revenue per case. The latest reported quarter then showed stronger aligner growth alongside a contraction in Systems and Services.

The 2025 gap between case growth and revenue per case is a reminder that unit growth alone does not establish stronger pricing or revenue quality. In the first six months of 2026, Align said higher volume and favorable foreign exchange helped aligner revenue, while discounting and a shift toward lower-priced countries and products partly offset those gains. Track cases and revenue per case together, and distinguish shipment growth from revenue growth.
How to read Align’s margins and earnings quality
In fiscal 2025, Align reported operating income of $545.8 million, a 13.5% operating margin, net income of $410.4 million, and diluted EPS of $5.65. The company attributed gross-margin pressure to restructuring charges, impairments, depreciation on disposed assets, and lower average selling prices, partly offset by operating efficiencies. Clear Aligner gross margin was affected by $77 million of accelerated depreciation on assets disposed of other than by sale and lower average selling prices; Systems and Services faced lower average selling prices and a $15 million inventory impairment. Q2 2026 reported margins should not be read as a clean underlying trend in isolation. The quarter’s GAAP gross margin was 71.7% and GAAP operating margin was 14.6%, versus a non-GAAP operating margin of 22.9%. GAAP net income was $108.3 million, or $1.51 per diluted share, while non-GAAP diluted EPS was $2.64. Align reported that foreign exchange reduced year-over-year operating margin by about 1.4 percentage points and recorded an estimated $37.5 million UK VAT liability, inclusive of interest. (Align Technology Q2 2026 earnings release, July 29, 2026)
Non-GAAP results can help isolate items management excludes, but they do not replace GAAP results. Compare the company’s reconciliation and the nature of adjustments across periods; do not annualize one quarter’s GAAP or adjusted margin. Management also anticipated additional restructuring and accelerated depreciation in Q3 2026.

What management expected for 2026
These are forecasts issued with Align’s July 29, 2026 Q2 release, not reported outcomes. The distinction matters because the forecast assumed aligner volume growth while scanner-related revenue remained under pressure.
| Forecast period or measure | Management outlook |
|---|---|
| Q3 2026 worldwide revenue | $1.000–$1.020 billion |
| Q3 2026 Clear Aligner volume | Mid-single-digit year-over-year growth; sequentially lower average selling price was expected from geographic mix and foreign exchange |
| Q3 2026 Systems and Services revenue | Expected to decline both sequentially and year over year |
| Fiscal 2026 total revenue | Growth of 3%–4% |
| Fiscal 2026 Clear Aligner | Volume growth of about 6%, with average selling price flat to slightly down |
| Fiscal 2026 Systems and Services | Revenue decline of 6%–8% |
| Fiscal 2026 GAAP margins | Gross margin of 70.2%–70.5%; operating margin of 15.1%–15.6% |
| Fiscal 2026 non-GAAP operating margin | About 23.7% |
Management said scanner shipment growth was expected to be double-digit even as Systems and Services revenue was forecast to decline, reflecting a shift toward lower-priced scanners and lease, rental, or certified pre-owned models. That contrast makes revenue and average selling price important alongside units placed.

Risks that could change the investment case
- Price, volume, and mix: Align says lower volumes or average selling prices can reduce revenue, gross profit, operating profit, and net income. Promotions, discounts, geographic mix, channel mix, and lower-priced products can weigh on revenue per case.
- Competition and substitution: Align’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies traditional wires and brackets, clear-aligner rivals, laboratories, startups, doctors, dental support organizations, and direct-to-consumer businesses as competitive factors. Scanner competition includes other intraoral scanners and traditional impression workflows. Lower-priced alternatives or faster technology changes could pressure adoption and pricing.
- Scanner-market weakness and sales-model mix: The 2026 outlook points to declining Systems and Services revenue despite expected scanner shipment growth. A greater share of lower-priced, leased, rented, or certified pre-owned systems can make placements a poor proxy for segment revenue.
- Costs and operating leverage: Restructuring, impairments, and accelerated depreciation affected recent reported margins. The 2026 outlook also included restructuring, depreciation, and legal-settlement costs, so investors need to judge whether margin improvement reflects repeatable operating efficiencies or timing and one-off effects.
- Currency, tariffs, supply chain, and geopolitics: Foreign exchange affected Q2 results. Align’s 2025 Form 10-K describes tariff exposure, cross-border production and supply chains, and geopolitical risks, including operations in Mexico and iTero operations headquartered in Israel. These factors can affect costs, demand, and execution.
- UK VAT matter: Align said the UK Upper Tribunal overturned an earlier VAT exemption decision on July 7, 2026. From September 7, applicable aligner and retainer invoices began including 20% VAT, with list prices unchanged. The company recorded an estimated $37.5 million liability and said it intended to appeal; the final outcome remained uncertain in its July release.
How to assess ALGN’s valuation
On October 2, 2026, ALGN closed at $143.74. Stock Analysis reported a market capitalization of approximately $10.21 billion, enterprise value of $9.23 billion, trailing P/E of 24.97, and forward P/E of 12.13. These are that provider’s calculations, last updated October 2, 2026, and not company-reported statistics. The forward P/E depends especially on forecast earnings; another provider or earnings definition may produce different multiples.

Those figures are a dated market snapshot, not intrinsic value or a price target. A lower forward multiple than trailing multiple can reflect expected earnings growth, but it is not proof that the shares are undervalued. The available figures do not establish a defensible single fair-value estimate.
| Valuation lens | What to test for Align | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Earnings multiples | Identify the earnings period and whether the denominator is GAAP, adjusted, trailing, or forecast earnings. | Margins include unusual items, and forward earnings rely on forecasts that may change. |
| Enterprise-value measures | Compare enterprise value with a clearly stated operating measure and period. | This places debt and cash in the valuation frame rather than relying only on equity market value. |
| Cash-flow yield | Use a defined cash-flow measure and account for capital spending and cash conversion. | Cash generation can differ from reported earnings; a yield is only meaningful with its period and assumptions stated. |
Build an investment view by testing how valuation changes under different operating assumptions, rather than labeling one multiple cheap or expensive:
- More supportive case: Clear Aligner volume growth persists, revenue per case stabilizes, scanner revenue recovers, and margin gains are supported by durable efficiencies and cash generation.
- More demanding case: Discounting or mix continues to dilute revenue per case, Systems and Services weakness persists, costs or legal matters weigh on GAAP earnings, or competition limits pricing power.
These are analytical scenarios, not earnings forecasts. Any valuation comparison should state the earnings period, source, and assumptions used.
