How to Evaluate AI Stocks When Spending Growth Slows

AI spending can keep rising even as its growth rate slows. Evaluate exposure by tracing spending to revenue, cash flow, financing risks and valuation assumptions.

When AI infrastructure spending grows more slowly, the amount spent can still be rising. That distinction matters: suppliers may face slower order growth and lower investor expectations even while customers keep spending heavily. To evaluate an AI-exposed company, trace who pays it, test whether spending is producing revenue and cash flow, inspect the financing and bottlenecks, then check what the current valuation assumes.

What does slower AI spending growth actually mean?

Spending growth decelerates when spending continues to increase but at a slower rate. If a buyer raises its outlay from one year to the next by a smaller percentage, that is not a spending cut. A decline in spending is a different scenario, with more direct implications for budgets, orders and capacity utilization.

For investors, the distinction does not make deceleration harmless. A supplier whose sales depend on expanding infrastructure budgets may grow more slowly as customer spending growth eases. Its stock can also fall if the market had priced in faster growth than the company ultimately delivers. Goldman Sachs Research identifies the timing of a capex-growth slowdown as a valuation risk for infrastructure companies, and notes that investor reactions may differ when companies show a clearer connection between capital spending and revenue.

Keep three things separate in your analysis: reported results, company guidance and third-party forecasts. A forecast is an estimate, not a completed investment or a reported outcome; management guidance is also not the same as realized revenue.

Start by locating the company in the AI spending chain

“AI stock” can describe businesses with very different sources of revenue and exposure to capital spending. Classify the company by what it does, who pays it, and how directly its results depend on new infrastructure budgets.

Business role What to examine Exposure to slower spending growth
Cloud or platform buyer Whether cloud, software or other product revenue grows alongside investment; customer usage, retention and pricing; and whether AI improves established businesses. High investment can support future capacity and services, but weak monetization or utilization can weigh on returns.
Chip and systems supplier Orders, shipments, backlog quality, repeat demand, customer budgets and the share of sales tied to a small number of buyers. Sales can be sensitive to order timing, customer concentration and changes in infrastructure plans.
Data-center or power enabler Access to land, power and data-center capacity; customer commitments; project timing; and financing obligations. Deployment can be delayed by physical constraints or customer funding, even when demand remains strong.
Software platform Paid usage, renewal and retention, pricing power, margins and how much AI changes product economics rather than operating costs alone. Infrastructure demand may precede software monetization, leaving a gap between investment and measurable returns.
Application or product seller Paying customers, repeat purchases, adoption, customer retention and evidence that AI features support revenue or reduce costs. End-user monetization may be less established than infrastructure demand.

Also map the customer relationship. Ask whether revenue is recurring or transactional, whether a few customers have bargaining power, and whether buyers can switch to internal or alternative solutions. S&P Global Market Intelligence has discussed hyperscalers’ use of proprietary silicon and models to reduce reliance on third parties and retain margin, while also noting the investment and lock-in trade-offs. A supplier should therefore be assessed not just on end-market demand but on its role in customers’ own build-versus-buy decisions.

How can you tell whether AI spending is paying off?

Look for a traceable chain from investment to usage, revenue and ultimately cash generation. The evidence differs by business model, and management’s claims about strategic value or productivity should not be treated as equivalent to AI-attributed sales.

For cloud and platform buyers

  • Compare infrastructure investment with growth in cloud or relevant product revenue over several reporting periods.
  • Look for evidence of customer usage, retention and pricing, rather than capacity announcements alone.
  • Ask whether AI is increasing revenue in existing businesses, improving customer retention or lowering costs—and whether the company quantifies the effect.
  • Separate revenue specifically attributed to AI from broader claims that AI improves productivity or competitiveness.

For suppliers and enablers

  • Compare orders and reported sales with customers’ disclosed budgets and deployment plans.
  • Check whether backlog converts into shipments and revenue on the expected schedule; a large backlog does not by itself establish delivery timing or repeat demand.
  • Look for repeat orders and a broader customer base, not just one period of accelerated purchases.
  • For data-center and power businesses, track whether projects reach deployment and whether the customer has funding and the physical capacity to proceed.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s 2026 analysis describes AI monetization as concentrated in infrastructure, while monetization among end users remains early, uneven and opaque. That observation is a useful reason to assess infrastructure providers and application sellers on different evidence—not a guarantee that infrastructure companies will earn attractive returns.

Test margins, cash conversion and the cost of capacity

Revenue growth alone cannot show whether investment is economically attractive. Review gross and operating margins, incremental margins, operating cash flow, capital expenditure and free cash flow across multiple periods. A company can report rising sales while spending heavily to build capacity, or see costs rise before the new capacity produces revenue.

  • Margins: Check whether additional revenue is translating into stronger or weaker gross and operating margins. Consider whether growth requires discounts, higher operating costs or continued infrastructure investment.
  • Cash conversion: Compare operating cash flow and capital expenditure with earnings. Free cash flow can reveal the cash left after investment that reported earnings alone do not show.
  • Capacity utilization: Ask whether existing capacity is being used effectively and whether additional inference demand could improve returns on installed infrastructure.
  • Ongoing costs: Consider depreciation and the cost of power and operations. These costs can offset revenue gains if capacity is underused or monetization lags.

Forecasts illustrate why the period and scope matter. In an August 27, 2026 announcement, S&P Global Ratings said its analysis projected negative free operating cash flow for the six hyperscalers it covered—Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle and SpaceX—in 2026 and 2027, with recovery not projected until 2029 in that analysis. It also projected more than $1.3 trillion in combined hyperscaler capex by 2027. These are S&P Global Ratings forecasts, not reported outcomes, and they do not describe every AI-related company.

Look beyond conventional debt for financing exposure

Balance-sheet debt is only part of the financing picture. Review company filings for leases, purchase commitments, guarantees, joint ventures, special-purpose vehicles and residual-value arrangements. Consider when obligations come due, whether projects need refinancing and how sensitive expected returns are to interest rates.

S&P Global Ratings has highlighted increasingly complex financing structures as relevant to credit analysis. Its Managing Director and Sector Lead, Naveen Sarma, said in the agency’s August 27, 2026 announcement: “As AI infrastructure investment accelerates, the focus is expanding beyond the scale of spending to the funding models, financial commitments and long-term implications that accompany it.”

Company disclosures can show how these exposures arise. NVIDIA’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26, 2026 describes guarantees and other commitments connected with land, power and data-center shells, as well as risks involving customer funding and deployment. Such arrangements can link a supplier’s own obligations to whether customers complete infrastructure projects; they are not interchangeable with ordinary reported debt.

Measure customer concentration and physical bottlenecks

A company’s exposure can be concentrated both commercially and operationally. Check what share of revenue comes from major customers, how much negotiating power those buyers have, and whether sales depend on a narrow set of suppliers, sites or deployment conditions. Customer concentration can amplify a slowdown if a large buyer delays or changes a plan.

In its Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q, for the quarter ended July 26, 2026, NVIDIA reported that two direct customers accounted for 23% and 16% of revenue, respectively. That is a company-specific disclosure for that filing period, not a measure of the wider AI market or a permanent share of future revenue.

Physical constraints can disrupt deployment independently of demand. Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K says AI deployment may depend on the availability and pricing of technical infrastructure, including network capacity, energy and equipment. NVIDIA’s filing also identifies land, power, data-center shells and capital as potential constraints. For a company exposed to these inputs, ask whether projects can be delivered on schedule and whether constraints could raise costs or defer revenue.

Stress-test valuation under three spending paths

Valuation is a question about the company’s future cash flows relative to the price investors pay, not a label attached to AI exposure. Model how results might change under multiple spending paths, varying revenue growth, margins, reinvestment needs and longer-term assumptions. Then compare the implied outcomes with the current market price and with businesses that have similar economics.

Spending path Questions to model What the scenario tests
Spending accelerates Can the company deliver capacity on time? Do margins and cash conversion improve as revenue grows, or does expansion require proportionately more capital? Whether growth produces attractive economics rather than merely higher sales.
Spending stays high but grows more slowly How much does the company depend on continued acceleration? Can current capacity support revenue, and do orders, margins and cash flow remain resilient? Whether the investment case works without another step-up in customer budgets.
Spending falls What happens to order growth, utilization, backlog conversion, margins and financing obligations if customers cut or defer plans? How much downside comes from lower demand, delayed deployment or underused capacity.

A slowdown in expectations can affect a stock before it appears as lower reported sales. That is why a scenario should account for what the market already expects, not only the company’s most recent growth rate. Keep assumptions explicit: a more optimistic terminal growth rate or margin can materially change the implied valuation even if near-term revenue assumptions are unchanged.

Broad valuation statistics offer context, not a verdict on an individual security. J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s 2026 analysis described an approximately 28x collective P/E for the mega-cap technology stocks it discussed. That scoped group statistic does not establish whether any one company is cheap or expensive; business mix, growth expectations, profitability and balance-sheet exposure differ.

Use a repeatable company-by-company checklist

  1. Identify the economic role. Classify the company as a buyer, supplier, enabler, platform or application seller, and identify who pays it.
  2. Trace monetization. Separate reported AI-related revenue and observable usage from strategic or productivity claims.
  3. Check durability. Examine repeat demand, retention, backlog conversion, customer bargaining power and alternatives such as proprietary silicon or models.
  4. Review returns and cash. Compare margins, capital spending, operating cash flow and free cash flow over several periods.
  5. Read the obligations. Include leases, guarantees, commitments and other financing structures alongside debt.
  6. Map concentration and constraints. Note major customers, critical suppliers, energy and site availability, and deployment capacity.
  7. Run the scenarios. Test acceleration, slower growth with spending still high, and falling spending; compare the resulting economics with the price investors pay.
  8. Label every number. Mark whether it is a reported result, management forecast or third-party estimate, and retain the period, scope and date.

For peer comparisons, keep companies with similar business models together where possible. Compare direct capex exposure, concentration and bargaining power, monetization evidence, incremental returns, free cash flow and financing obligations, valuation sensitivity, and capacity or energy constraints. A cloud buyer and an application seller may both be exposed to AI, but their spending-to-revenue paths are not directly interchangeable.
