To judge an AI search answer, check each important claim against the cited source, read enough context to catch qualifications, and look for material facts the answer leaves out. A citation or confident tone is not proof. The more a decision could affect your health, money, rights, or safety, the stronger the evidence and expertise you should require.
How to check an AI search answer
- Separate the answer into claims. Identify statements that can be checked, especially dates, numbers, causal claims, and advice. Decide which claims are material to the question rather than treating the answer as one all-or-nothing block.
- Open the citations and find the supporting passage. Check that the source supports the specific claim beside the link. A page that discusses the same topic may not substantiate the answer’s wording.
- Read beyond the cited sentence. Review enough of the source to understand its scope, qualifications, limitations, and intended meaning. NIST’s evaluation probes frame related checks as faithfulness (whether the source supports the claim), completeness (whether the answer captures the source’s message), and sufficiency (whether the evidence is strong enough for the claim). NIST’s citation-probe project describes faithfulness as asking whether the source actually supports the claim.
- Assess the source itself. Prefer primary documents, official information, or relevant expert sources when they are available. A source’s prominence or inclusion as a citation does not establish that it is authoritative for the question or that the answer interpreted it correctly.
- Look for missing context. Check whether the response omits a relevant date, jurisdiction, uncertainty, limitation, competing view, or important caveat. An answer can cite real material and still make a disputed issue appear settled or simplify a source’s message. OpenAI’s guidance on ChatGPT accuracy warns that answers can oversimplify or misrepresent the weight of scientific consensus or social debate.
- Scale your scrutiny to the stakes. For a low-stakes question, a quick source check may be enough. For decisions involving health, money, rights, or safety, verify against primary documents and consult appropriately qualified expertise. NIST’s guidance emphasizes evaluating systems in light of their expected use and potential harms. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework resource discusses contextual characteristics including validity and reliability.
Do not treat fluent writing, certainty, or a polished format as a reliability signal. Judge the evidence behind the answer, not how authoritative it sounds.

How to evaluate an AI search system repeatedly
When assessing a system rather than one response, use a repeatable method tied to the system’s intended task and audience. A single impressive answer—or a single mistake—does not establish how it performs overall.
Build a representative set of questions
Test realistic questions that reflect the system’s expected use, including the kinds of ambiguity, stakes, and subject matter it will encounter. Record the questions, scoring method, and conditions so that readers can interpret the results. NIST’s measurement guidance calls for realistic test sets and methodology details alongside accuracy measurements. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework resource also describes contextual measures such as robustness, bias, interpretability, and transparency.
#1 Best Overall
Score citation coverage separately from citation correctness
- Citation coverage: Are material factual claims supported by citations?
- Citation correctness: Does each cited source support the particular claim it accompanies?
These are different questions: a system may provide citations for many claims while linking to sources that do not actually substantiate them. Depending on the intended use, also assess source quality and relevance, completeness, preservation of context, and whether the response is useful for making the relevant decision.
Compare systems on the same dimensions
For a fair comparison, use the same representative questions and state the basis of the overall judgment. Consider factual support for material claims, citation coverage and correctness, source authority and relevance, preservation of caveats and competing evidence, performance for the intended audience and task, and the consequences of errors. A system can do well on one dimension and poorly on another, so a single score or impression can conceal important differences.

What published citation figures can—and cannot—tell you
A 2023 human-audit study by Nelson F. Liu and coauthors evaluated answers from Bing Chat, NeevaAI, Perplexity, and YouChat across a diverse set of information-seeking queries. In those evaluated answers, 51.5% of generated sentences were fully supported by citations on average, and 74.5% of citations supported their associated sentence on average. These figures describe that study’s products and conditions at that time; they are not current rates for those services, a measurement of every AI search system, or a market-wide accuracy estimate. Read the study.
Those numbers also measure different things: the first concerns the share of generated sentences fully supported by citations, while the second concerns whether citations supported their associated sentences. Neither alone captures every question a reader should ask, such as whether the source is authoritative, whether context is preserved, or whether important evidence is missing.
Rank #3
A citation may be authentic but outdated, incomplete, low-authority, or misapplied. An uncited statement may happen to be true, but the answer does not provide a clear evidence trail for checking it. No single result should be generalized beyond the system, date, queries, and method on which it was measured.
