How Bloom Energy Fuel Cells Power Data Centers—and What They Do Not Solve

Bloom Energy fuel cells turn fuel into onsite electricity for data centers, supporting islanded or grid-connected operation. Deployment scale, uptime, and emissions depend on project details and fuel source.

Bloom Energy’s Energy Server makes electricity onsite using solid-oxide fuel cells. Instead of burning fuel in an engine or turbine to turn a generator, it converts fuel into electricity through an electrochemical reaction. A data center can use that power as a primary supply, as a supplement to utility power, or in an islanded microgrid while waiting for a grid connection. The system still needs a suitable fuel supply and careful integration with the facility’s electrical and backup-power design.

How a Bloom Energy fuel cell makes electricity

A solid-oxide fuel cell uses fuel and oxygen in an electrochemical process to produce electricity. Bloom says its Energy Servers can use natural gas, biogas, hydrogen, or blends. The process is not conventional combustion in an engine or turbine, but the fuel source matters: a natural-gas installation still produces carbon emissions.

At a data center, the Energy Server supplies electricity to the facility’s electrical system. It is one part of a larger power design, not a standalone data-center power system: electrical distribution, power conditioning, redundancy, backup provisions, and cooling remain facility-level considerations. Bloom has also promoted DC-native output and 800 V DC architectures; those are electrical-architecture choices distinct from the fuel cell’s basic method of generating electricity.

How data centers use the electricity

Onsite primary power

A site may use fuel cells as a major source of its electricity where grid capacity is unavailable or a utility connection is delayed. In an islanded configuration, the facility operates without relying on an active grid connection. This makes fuel availability and the site’s electrical design central to whether the arrangement can meet the facility’s needs.

Supplemental power alongside the grid

Once connected to the grid, a data center can use fuel-cell output alongside utility power. Bloom describes systems that can shift from islanded operation to grid-connected support. The share of a site’s demand covered by fuel cells depends on the project; the presence of an onsite system does not by itself establish that a facility is fully independent of the grid.

Continuous operation is not the same as guaranteed uptime

Bloom describes its systems as capable of continuous operation, but a data center’s actual availability depends on configuration, redundancy, fuel supply, maintenance, and integration with the rest of the facility. Bloom’s data-center materials cite availability ranges from 99.9% to 99.999%; those are vendor claims, not a universal outcome or a site-specific guarantee. A system’s claimed availability should not be treated as the uptime of the whole data center.

Why operators consider onsite fuel cells

Large data centers need substantial, dependable electricity, and securing a grid interconnection can take time. Onsite generation offers a possible way to bring capacity online before a grid connection is ready or to add supply after connection. Modular installation can also let a project add capacity in increments, though schedules and economics depend on the site and are not assured by a vendor’s best-case example.

Bloom’s 2026 Data Center Power Report cites its November 2025 survey of 92 developers. In that survey, 73% of respondents said they were actively evaluating or selecting onsite power providers. Respondents also expected roughly one-third of data centers in 2030 to use 100% onsite power. These are survey responses and expectations, not a measurement of current industry deployments or a forecast confirmed by actual 2030 outcomes.

The same survey reported that 45% of respondents expected to implement DC architectures by 2028. Bloom’s earlier company blog cited an estimate that U.S. data-center IT load capacity could rise from about 80 GW in 2025 to 150 GW by 2028. Both are attributed expectations or forecasts, not established outcomes.

What reported deployments show—and what the figures mean

Project Bloom-reported scale and status How to read it
Equinix In its February 20, 2025 announcement, Bloom said the collaboration exceeded 100 MW across 19 Equinix IBX data centers in six U.S. states. About 75 MW was operational and another 30 MW was under construction at that time. The operational and under-construction amounts are different statuses. Bloom described the fuel cells as supplementing grid power.
Oracle In its April 13, 2026 announcement, Bloom said Oracle’s master services agreement permitted procurement of up to 2.8 GW, with an initial 1.2 GW contracted and deployment underway. Bloom also said an earlier Oracle system became fully operational in 55 days, compared with an anticipated 90-day schedule. The 2.8 GW is a procurement ceiling, not capacity already operating. The 55-day report is a specific company-reported deployment, not a standard delivery promise.

Bloom’s data-center materials also describe delivery in as little as 90 days and scaling from 20 MW to 500 MW and beyond. These are vendor statements; actual delivery, usable capacity, and schedule depend on project conditions. The Oracle example does not establish that another project can meet the same schedule.

Are Bloom Energy fuel cells carbon-free?

No—not when fueled by natural gas. Bloom’s How Bloom Reduces Emissions Technical Note states that Energy Servers running on hydrogen or biogas produce “carbon neutral or zero carbon power,” while natural-gas-fueled systems produce carbon emissions. The company’s characterization of biogas or hydrogen depends on the fuel’s source and production pathway; it should not be read as a verified lifecycle-emissions result for every project.

Bloom says its systems avoid combustion and reduce local air pollutants and water use. Those comparisons are company claims, and project-specific outcomes depend on the system and site. Bloom’s technical note says Ramboll, an independent engineering firm, verifies its annual greenhouse-gas inventory and avoided-emissions methodologies.

Bloom reports a cumulative reduction of 7.8 million metric tonnes of CO2e through the end of 2025 for deployments since 2011, along with reductions of 9 million pounds of sulfur oxides and 24 million pounds of nitrogen oxides. These are Bloom’s cumulative avoided-emissions figures, not emissions measurements for an individual data center or a lifecycle assessment of a particular natural-gas installation.

What fuel cells do not establish on their own

  • Project cost: The available figures do not establish comparable, site-level costs or total delivered cost over a project’s life.
  • Independent performance comparisons: Vendor availability statements do not provide a like-for-like, independently established ranking against grid supply, engines, turbines, batteries, or renewable-plus-storage systems.
  • Useful heat at every site: Bloom’s AI-power blog says combined heat and power can raise efficiency from 54% to over 90%. That is a conditional claim about combined heat and power, not electrical efficiency every data center will achieve. Recovered heat is beneficial only if a site has a practical use for it.
  • Automatic cooling savings or grid independence: Neither follows simply from installing fuel cells. Cooling effects and the degree of grid reliance depend on the facility’s design and operation.

For a project decision, operators need site-specific assessment of power demand, fuel access and price, interconnection timing, redundancy, permitting, emissions, water use, electrical architecture, and lifecycle cost. The reported deployments demonstrate commercial use at meaningful scale, but they do not settle those project-level questions for another site.
