Evaluate an AI tool against the risks of the job you want it to do—not a universal “safe” score or a list of reassuring feature names. Start with the task, the data involved, the people who could be affected by mistakes, and whether the tool can take actions. Then check what the provider documents, how it tested its safeguards, and what controls you can verify in your own configuration.
Start with the use case, not the feature list
A tool that drafts low-stakes text has a different risk profile from an agent that can send email, edit customer records, execute code, or make a purchase. Define the job and its boundaries before comparing products. Keep the comparison consistent: assess the same task, model or product version, plan, region, settings, and integrations for each provider.

- Task: What will the tool be asked to do, and what would a consequential error look like?
- Data: Will it receive public information, personal details, confidential business material, credentials, or regulated data?
- People: Who may rely on or be affected by its output? Could errors affect people differently across groups or contexts?
- Authority: Can it only suggest an action, or can it make changes in another system?
- Failure response: Who reviews output, catches mistakes, reports incidents, and decides whether the tool should be paused?
Use these answers to set minimum requirements. For example, retention and access controls may be non-negotiable for confidential inputs; approval steps and action logs may matter more for an agent connected to external systems.
What safety features should an AI tool have?
There is no single feature set that makes every AI tool suitable for every task. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) identifies trustworthiness characteristics including validity and reliability, safety, security and resilience, accountability and transparency, explainability and interpretability, privacy enhancement, and fairness with harmful bias managed. It calls for considering these across design, development, deployment, use, and evaluation—not only at launch. See the NIST AI RMF FAQs.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
NIST also cautions that addressing characteristics one at a time does not ensure a trustworthy system: priorities vary by setting, characteristics can trade off, and not all apply equally in every situation. Treat the framework as voluntary guidance, not a product certification or an overall safety rating. AI RMF 1.0 was released on January 26, 2023; NIST says it is under revision, and its Generative AI Profile was released July 26, 2024. Check the NIST AI RMF page for current framework information.
Assess the evidence behind each claim
A feature label is not evidence that a safeguard works for your task. Ask what was evaluated, how it was tested, which model or configuration was covered, what limitations were found, and how results are monitored after changes. Look for dated documentation, a clear evaluation scope, and a way to test the product with safe, representative examples of your own use case.

Distinguish provider-reported tests from independent evaluation. A system card can describe useful methods and limitations, but it is not automatically a current, comparable audit of competing tools. NIST’s AI Resource Center supports operationalizing the AI RMF and provides resources for testing, evaluation, verification, and validation (TEVV). Its listed November 2025 ARIA 0.1 pilot report combines expert annotators and human testers. That is one example of structured evaluation, not a test method sufficient for every product or risk. See the NIST AI Resource Center.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check harmful-output safeguards in context
Ask which harmful requests or output categories the provider addresses, how it evaluates them, what known limitations remain, and how users can report failures. Refusals in a handful of demonstrations do not establish comprehensive protection. For a consequential use, test representative edge cases under controlled conditions and decide which outputs require human review.

Check reliability and limitations for the actual task
Seek task-specific evaluation methods, the tested version and date, known failure modes, and a safe way to try representative cases. A broad claim about model capability does not show how reliably the tool performs your particular job.
How can I tell whether an AI tool is safe for my data?
Read current, product- and plan-specific privacy documentation rather than inferring data practices from a general AI policy or security framework. Verify what information is collected, how long it is retained, what it is used for, who can access it, and which settings or contractual controls apply. Check specifically whether inputs may be used to improve models and whether retention or training choices can be configured.

For security, look for documentation covering accounts, data, APIs, integrations, model and application components, access controls, and vulnerability response. Pay particular attention to boundaries around connected systems: a tool’s permissions may expose data or actions beyond the chat itself. Google describes its Secure AI Framework (SAIF) as an approach to integrating security and privacy into machine-learning-powered applications. It is a framework example, not a certification or proof that a particular product is safe. See Google’s SAIF overview.
Do not assume that one provider’s stated practices apply to another product, plan, region, or configuration. Confirm the terms that govern the exact service you intend to use before supplying sensitive information.

For AI agents, inspect permissions and confirmation points
If a tool can send messages, make purchases, change records, delete files, or execute code, evaluate its authority separately from the quality of its answers. Find out whether permissions are granular, whether proposed actions are visible before execution, which actions require explicit approval, and whether you can stop or reverse an action. Consider whether the tool records what it did and whether that record is available to the people responsible for oversight.
OpenAI’s 2025 Operator System Card describes human oversight at key steps, explicit confirmation for certain actions such as financial transactions and sending emails, and restrictions on some tasks. It reports internal testing and external red teaming, including tests involving prompt injections and jailbreaks; it also notes that red-team constraints may not capture worst-case real-world risks. These are claims about the documented Operator system and its evaluation, not a universal control standard or a side-by-side independent comparison. The card reports a 1% success rate on its biorisk tooling evaluation set—a narrow, provider-reported result that is not an overall safety score and does not transfer to other models or tasks. See the Operator System Card.
Compare providers with a use-case checklist
Use the same questions for each candidate. Record what the documentation establishes, what you verified in a trial, and what remains unclear. Weight the answers according to your risk assessment instead of adding them into a single score.
| Area | Questions to ask | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Use-case fit and reliability | Which tasks and limitations are documented? How is performance evaluated on representative inputs? | Task-specific methods, tested version and date, stated limitations, and a safe way to test representative cases. |
| Harmful-output safeguards | Which harmful requests or outputs are addressed? How can failures be reported? | Documented policy, evaluation scope, and a clear reporting path—not refusal examples alone. |
| Privacy and data handling | What is retained, for how long, for what purposes, and accessible to whom? Which settings or contractual controls apply? | Current documentation for the specific product and plan, with retention and model-improvement choices explained where offered. |
| Security | How are accounts, data, APIs, integrations, and application components protected? | Security documentation, access controls, vulnerability response, and clear boundaries for connected systems. |
| Human control and permissions | Can the tool affect external systems? Which actions need review or confirmation? | Granular permissions, visible proposed actions, approval for consequential actions, and ways to stop or reverse them. |
| Transparency and accountability | Can the provider explain intended use, limitations, evaluation, and incident reporting? | Dated system documentation and named accountability or reporting paths. |
| Fairness and affected people | Who may be affected by errors or uneven performance? Does evaluation include relevant groups and contexts? | Evaluation tailored to affected populations and a plan for addressing disparate outcomes. |
| Ongoing evaluation | How are safeguards re-evaluated after changes? What happens when a test fails or a new risk appears? | Lifecycle monitoring and documented change management. |
Make a decision—and revisit it when conditions change
Set pass-or-fail requirements for the risks that matter most, then compare remaining trade-offs. If a provider cannot answer a critical question, treat that as an unresolved risk rather than assuming the control exists. If you proceed, limit permissions and sensitive inputs to what the use case requires, keep human review where errors could cause meaningful harm, and establish a way to report and respond to failures.
Recheck documentation when the model, plan, region, settings, integrations, or intended use changes. A safeguard claim applies only to the product and configuration it describes, at the time it was documented; a change can alter both capability and risk.
