Use AI to help investigate; verify material facts independently before investing or granting account access.
First identify what the service actually does
“AI investing” can describe very different activities. A public chatbot might explain a financial term or summarize a company filing. Another service might recommend securities, assemble a portfolio, send trade instructions, or control trading activity in a brokerage account. The risks increase when a tool moves from explaining information to recommending an investment or acting on an account.

Write down what the offer promises and what it asks you to do. Does it provide general information, personalized recommendations, or automatic trading? Does it ask you to open an account, deposit money, connect an existing brokerage account, or share login credentials? FINRA describes auto-trading as a third party sending trading instructions directly to an investor’s brokerage account for execution. That is materially different from asking a chatbot to explain a term.

Identify the accountable parties
Find the legal name of the company operating the service, the people responsible for it, the country or countries where it operates, and any financial firm it says it partners with. A product name or app-store listing alone does not tell you which legal entity is accountable. If a firm’s name or logo appears in a pitch, verify the relationship by contacting that firm through contact information obtained independently from its official directory—not through a phone number, email, or link in the pitch.

For a US provider or professional, Investor.gov recommends checking registration and disciplinary history; FINRA BrokerCheck can be used for relevant individuals and firms. Use the official lookup for the jurisdiction where the provider operates and where you are investing. Canada and other jurisdictions have different registration resources, so a US lookup is not a substitute for the relevant local regulator’s records.
Registration is a diligence check, not a guarantee. It does not establish that a strategy performs well, that a recommendation is right for you, or that a claimed partnership is genuine. Conversely, do not infer a provider’s legal status from an AI label; verify the specific entity and service with the relevant regulator.
Turn the AI pitch into questions you can verify
Ask the provider to describe the AI’s role in the full investment workflow. Does it gather information, summarize it, forecast prices, select securities, allocate a portfolio, or generate and send orders? What parts are automated, and where does a person review the result? A tool that uses AI only to summarize documents should not be treated as though it has demonstrated predictive or trading ability.
Ask what data the service uses, how current those data are, what assumptions shape its recommendations, and what the system cannot account for. Ask how it handles errors or changing market conditions, and whether its output is reviewed before an investment decision or order. A provider should be able to explain these points specifically enough for you to understand the claimed capability and its limits.
“AI-powered,” “proprietary algorithm,” and “machine learning” are labels, not explanations. FINRA advises skepticism toward buzzwords without specifics and says a service should explain its technology with specificity. If the provider will not explain what the system does or what evidence supports the claimed advantage, treat the claim as unsubstantiated rather than filling in the gaps yourself.

The SEC Chair’s March 18, 2024 statement addressed “AI washing”: firms should not mislead the public about whether they use AI or how they use it. It also said public companies should have a reasonable basis for AI-related claims and disclose relevant risks. Those points make a useful diligence test: can the company describe the actual use and support the claims it makes, rather than relying on a fashionable label?
Test performance claims, not just the presentation
A return figure is meaningful only when you know how it was produced and what it leaves out. Ask whether the performance is from live investing or a simulation, which dates and market conditions it covers, what benchmark it is compared with, and whether it includes the complete set of recommendations or trades. Ask for losing positions as well as winners, and whether fees, trading costs, and other expenses are included.
Find out whether an independent party verified the evidence and what exactly that verification covered. An attractive chart or a handful of profitable examples does not answer those questions. FINRA warns that some pitches highlight winning trades while omitting poorly performing investments, and advises disregarding claims that lack specifics or audited proof. A backtest is not a record of what an investor actually experienced; even a documented past result does not establish what will happen next.
Check whether the period and comparison fit your own intended holding period and tolerance for losses. A result shown for one market environment may tell you little about a different one. If the provider does not disclose the dates, benchmark, full results, costs, or basis for verification, you cannot fairly compare its claim with another strategy or judge its relevance to your situation.
Be especially careful with highly specific return promises. FINRA describes some unregistered auto-trading services as promoting “consistent monthly returns of more than 10 percent.” That is a description of marketing claims to scrutinize—not a measured or verified performance statistic. The SEC, NASAA, and FINRA investor alert warns that a promise of high returns with little or no risk is a warning sign; even registered professionals should not be assumed capable of guaranteeing remarkable returns.

Decide whether the service fits your finances and goals
A tool can produce an internally consistent recommendation and still be unsuitable for you. Before paying or investing, read the terms and determine all fees and expenses, how the provider is compensated, what investments it considers, and how to end the relationship or withdraw funds. Understand whether the provider has an incentive that could affect the recommendation, and whether the investment choices are limited to a particular universe.

Automated tools may rely on assumptions, or omit details such as taxes, your other holdings, cash needs, investment experience, and a changing time horizon. If a questionnaire or prompt does not capture information that matters to your decision, do not assume the system has taken it into account. FINRA’s guidance on automated investment tools highlights the risk that assumptions or limited inputs can produce a recommendation that does not reflect the investor’s full circumstances.
Before acting, compare the recommendation with your goal, the date you may need the money, and the amount of loss you could tolerate. If the recommendation changes your portfolio substantially, ask what assumptions drove the change and whether it remains appropriate when your circumstances change. Do not treat a confident tone or personalized wording as evidence that the system has understood your full financial situation.
Check permissions and protect your account
If a service can connect to a brokerage account or trade, find out precisely what authority it receives. Determine whether it can view account data, submit orders, or do anything beyond the task you intended. Review the account’s authorization and connection settings, and monitor activity rather than assuming an automated system will wait for your approval.
FINRA warns that auto-trading can generate losses before an investor notices transactions. It also warns that unregistered services may request brokerage credentials, creating privacy and financial-safety risks. Do not hand over login details merely because a provider says they are required. If a service asks for credentials or permissions you do not understand, stop and confirm the arrangement with your brokerage using independently obtained contact information before proceeding.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify AI-generated facts at the source
AI can help you form questions or translate unfamiliar terminology, but its output may be stale, inaccurate, incomplete, misleading, or fabricated. A citation in an AI answer is a lead to investigate, not proof that the answer accurately represents the source. Open the original document and confirm that it says what the AI claims, in the relevant context and as of the relevant date.
For claims about a company, check authoritative company disclosures and regulator material, then look for corroboration from more than one reliable source. Separate a stated fact—such as a reported financial figure—from the AI’s interpretation or forecast of what it means. If a material fact cannot be traced to an original source or independently corroborated, do not base an investment decision on it.
The UK Financial Conduct Authority’s consumer guidance, updated July 30, 2026, says: “Use AI to guide you where to dig deeper, not as your final answer.” The FCA also cautions that AI content may be outdated and recommends checking facts against original sources. FINRA and the European Securities and Markets Authority likewise caution against relying solely on public AI output.

A forecast is not a certainty. The FCA says AI can analyze historical data and risks but cannot predict sudden unexpected events. ESMA’s 2025 warning says no one and nothing, including AI tools, can guarantee success in the stock market. Treat a forecast as an assumption-based view that could be wrong, not as assurance that a gain or protection from a loss is coming.

Compare services using the same evidence
If you are considering more than one provider, do not compare a detailed evidence-backed explanation with another provider’s headline return alone. Ask each one the same questions and record what it can substantiate. “Not stated” is a meaningful result: it tells you a point cannot be evaluated from the information the provider has supplied.
| What to compare | Evidence or answer to seek | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operator and registration | Legal entity, responsible professionals, jurisdiction, registration and disciplinary-history checks, and independently verified partnerships. | Establishes who is accountable and whether the relevant regulatory checks can be made; registration does not prove performance or suitability. |
| AI function and inputs | Specific role in the workflow, data sources and freshness, assumptions, limitations, and human review. | Shows whether the actual capability matches the language in the pitch. |
| Performance evidence | Live or simulated results, dates and conditions, benchmark, complete gains and losses, costs, and independent verification. | Helps expose selective examples and makes the claim more interpretable. |
| Fees and incentives | All fees and expenses, provider compensation, and any conflicts that could affect recommendations. | Costs and incentives can affect what you pay and how a recommendation is made. |
| Investment scope and fit | Investments considered, inputs and assumptions, and fit with your goals, time horizon, other holdings, cash needs, and risk tolerance. | A limited universe or incomplete picture of your circumstances can make an otherwise plausible recommendation unsuitable. |
| Account access and privacy | Data requested, permissions granted, whether the service can place trades, and how you can monitor activity. | Reveals the consequences of connecting an account and the control you retain. |
| Support and exit | Human oversight or support, how to pause or stop the service, revoke access, and withdraw funds. | Lets you judge whether you can get help and regain control if your needs or the service change. |
These comparison points reflect risks identified in guidance from FINRA, the SEC, the FCA, and ESMA. They are questions for evaluating a particular offer, not a ranking or endorsement of any provider.
Make the decision in sequence
- Classify the service. Decide whether it explains information, recommends investments, sends orders, or controls account activity.
- Verify the operator. Identify the legal entity and responsible people; use the relevant jurisdiction’s official regulator resources, and independently confirm any claimed firm relationship.
- Request a specific explanation. Ask what AI does, which data and assumptions it uses, how current those data are, and what human review and limitations apply.
- Demand complete performance context. Establish whether results are live or simulated and request dates, benchmarks, all gains and losses, costs, and independent verification.
- Check fit and terms. Review fees, compensation, investment scope, the assumptions about your circumstances, and how you can terminate the arrangement.
- Limit access and verify facts. Understand and restrict permissions; trace important AI-generated claims to original sources and corroborate them.
If a provider cannot answer a material question, do not substitute a testimonial, a buzzword, or a confident chatbot response for the missing evidence. Pause before transferring money or enabling trading. The right choice may be not to use the service.

Regulatory protections depend on where you are and on the nature of the service and provider. A general-purpose public AI tool is not automatically regulated financial advice. The FCA’s consumer guidance and ESMA’s warning address the limits of relying on public AI, while US investor guidance points readers to registration checks for relevant professionals and firms. Those sources do not make one country’s lookup or protections universal.
Check the local regulator’s official resources for the provider and service relevant to your location. If you are unsure whether a service is providing advice, trading on your behalf, or merely supplying general information, ask the provider to state that distinction clearly and verify any regulatory claims with the regulator. Do not infer authorization from a firm’s use of AI, from its website language, or from a registration result alone.
When AI can be useful in investment research
AI may help you organize questions, summarize material for closer review, or explain unfamiliar financial language. Use it as a starting point with a verification step: identify the original source, check the date and context, and confirm consequential facts elsewhere. The more a decision depends on a prediction, a claimed return, or a recommendation tailored to your finances, the less appropriate it is to rely on an unverified AI answer alone.
No cited regulator guidance establishes an independent performance statistic for AI investing tools. That means a reader should not treat a general claim that “AI beats the market” as a demonstrated result without provider-specific, complete, and verifiable evidence. It also does not show that every AI-assisted tool is ineffective; it means the claim needs evidence specific enough to assess before you risk money.
