Before it reaches a release branch, assign a human owner, inspect the complete diff and its dependencies, run tests and security checks, and obtain approval from someone who understands the affected system. In multiplayer features, treat every client-supplied value as hostile until an authoritative server validates the action, permission, range, rate, and current game state.
A dependable review also covers build scripts, CI workflows, deployment files, transitive dependencies, license obligations, and the legal status of AI output in the jurisdictions where you release. No scanner can prove a change safe by itself; a defensible decision combines human reasoning with automated evidence.

What “safe to ship” means for AI-written game code
“AI-generated” describes how a suggestion was produced, not a lower standard of engineering. The developer who accepts and ships the change remains responsible for its behavior, security, maintainability, and legal compliance. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance says every AI-assisted change should have a human owner, explicit review and approval, and attribution to the developer responsible for it.

Use the same engineering gates you would use for hand-written code, while adding scrutiny for unusual assumptions, generated dependencies, and files an AI agent may have changed outside the requested feature. A change is ready only when a reviewer can explain what it does, why it is correct in the project’s architecture, how it fails, and what evidence supports merging it.

A release decision in one view
| Gate | Question to answer | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Who accepts responsibility for the suggestion and its future maintenance? | Named author, reviewer, approved pull request |
| Scope | Which files, runtime paths, dependencies, and deployment assets changed? | Complete diff and dependency delta |
| Correctness | Does the implementation satisfy intended gameplay and handle invalid, missing, delayed, or concurrent inputs? | Unit, integration, and gameplay test results |
| Security | Are authorization, validation, secrets, deserialization, network boundaries, and privileged scripts protected? | Threat-model notes, static and secret-scan findings, reviewer sign-off |
| Licensing | Are direct and transitive components allowed by the project’s policy, with required notices? | Manifest or SBOM, license report, attribution records |
| Provenance | Can the team reconstruct the prompt or tool context, edits, tests, and approval where policy permits? | Change record with privacy-safe provenance |
Step 1: Establish ownership and map the entire change
Name a human owner
Record the developer who accepts the AI suggestion. That person should understand the relevant engine, language, networking model, and deployment process. A reviewer who cannot describe the code path and its assumptions should return the change for clarification rather than approving it because the code compiles.
Read the complete diff, not only the requested feature
List every affected source file, asset or serialization format, package manifest, generated file, build script, CI workflow, container definition, and deployment manifest. AI tools can modify adjacent files while “fixing” a task. A harmless-looking configuration edit may add network access, run an untrusted download, expose a secret, or change which code executes with elevated permissions.
Ask for an explainable change
Require a short description of the execution path, data assumptions, error behavior, state transitions, and tests. Note which parts were generated, which were rewritten by a human, and which were copied from an external source. Keep prompt or model details only when organizational policy and privacy rules allow; never place secrets or sensitive source in a tool without confirming what context leaves the environment.

Visual plausibility is not evidence of correctness. Compare the implementation with the intended behavior and with the surrounding architecture, then exercise the paths where game code commonly fails.
Check boundaries and invalid states
- Missing, null, empty, negative, oversized, or incorrectly typed values.
- Out-of-range coordinates, quantities, damage values, timers, and identifiers.
- State transitions that occur twice, never complete, or happen in the wrong order.
- Timeouts, retries, disconnects, reconnects, and partially completed transactions.
- Concurrent updates to inventory, scores, quests, matchmaking, or shared world objects.
- Cleanup when a scene, level, actor, or network session is destroyed.
- Failure paths that silently grant an item, duplicate a reward, skip an authorization check, or leave a lock held.
Trace assumptions across systems
Follow values from input to storage, rendering, physics, network replication, analytics, and persistence. Confirm units and coordinate systems, integer-versus-floating-point expectations, time zones, frame-rate assumptions, and serialization formats. Generated code often uses a plausible API with subtly different lifetime or threading semantics than the project’s actual engine version.
Test the new behavior and its regressions
Run the project’s compiler or engine diagnostics first, then add tests that target the new path rather than relying only on an existing suite. Unit tests should cover pure rules and boundary values. Integration tests should exercise save data, services, databases, and network messages together. Gameplay tests should cover real scenes, spawning, interaction, replication, and recovery from disconnects. Re-run regression tests for neighboring systems such as input, inventory, UI, progression, and matchmaking.

| Test layer | Useful cases for generated game code |
|---|---|
| Unit | Invalid parameters, rounding, limits, state-machine transitions, and deterministic rules |
| Integration | Persistence failures, service timeouts, serialization mismatches, and duplicate requests |
| Gameplay or end-to-end | Real client/server sessions, scene changes, respawns, reconnects, and multiplayer races |
| Fuzz or property-based | Malformed messages, unexpected sequences, large ranges, and invariants such as “currency never becomes negative” |
Step 3: Threat-model the multiplayer boundary
For a networked game, assume the client is controlled by an attacker. The client may alter message fields, call actions out of order, replay requests, send them faster than intended, or provide values never produced by the legitimate interface. Roblox Creator Hub’s networking guidance illustrates the principle: the server should validate client-triggered actions and remain the source of truth for critical state and decisions. The exact APIs and authority model differ in Unity, Unreal, Godot, and custom engines, so apply the principle to your own architecture rather than copying platform-specific code.
Inventory, currency, and purchases
Accept a client request such as “buy item 42” only after the server verifies the player’s identity, current balance, item availability, price, transaction state, and rate limit. Deduct currency and grant the item in an atomic operation. Never trust a client-reported price, balance, ownership flag, or success result.
Movement and combat
Validate speed, acceleration, teleport distance, fire rate, ammunition, cooldowns, line-of-sight or hit claims, and the actor’s current state. Depending on the game, the server may simulate movement, reconcile client prediction, or validate a bounded result. The generated code must fit that established model; adding a client-side “damage applied” event is not a security control.
Progression and rewards
Keep level, quest completion, achievements, drops, and reward grants on an authority that the player cannot modify. Validate prerequisites and ensure replaying the same event does not duplicate a reward. Test disconnects at every step so a player cannot receive both the item and a refund.
User-generated content
Validate size, encoding, ownership, moderation status, and allowed operations on the server before storing or broadcasting content. Treat deserialized objects and uploaded assets as hostile data, even when the client normally uses a trusted editor.
Use a threat-model table before approval
| Client-controlled input | Server-side checks |
|---|---|
| Action name and target identifier | Allowed action, ownership, current state, and target existence |
| Amounts, coordinates, or timing | Type, range, plausibility, cooldown, and rate limit |
| Purchase or reward request | Identity, price from server data, balance, prerequisites, and idempotency |
| Combat result or movement claim | Authority model, physics or rule constraints, and replay resistance |
| Text, files, or serialized objects | Size, schema, encoding, permissions, and safe parsing |
Step 4: Inspect security-sensitive code and AI-created infrastructure
Give extra review to high-risk code
Read authentication, authorization, cryptography, network handlers, deserialization, sandbox rules, file access, process execution, and secret-handling code line by line. Confirm that failures deny access, secrets are not logged, cryptographic libraries are used according to their documented APIs, and untrusted data cannot select a file path, command, class, or database operation.

Review build and deployment files as executable code
Inspect package scripts, Dockerfiles, CI workflows, release automation, editor plugins, and deployment manifests. Look for newly downloaded scripts, broad network permissions, unpinned actions or packages, credential exposure, commands executed on pull requests, and changes to artifact signing or publishing. A generated change in a workflow can be more dangerous than a bug in a gameplay class because it may run with repository or production credentials.
Account for repository prompt injection
Coding agents may read README files, issue text, comments, test fixtures, or other repository content as instructions. OWASP warns that untrusted content can influence an agent and that an agent may change build or CI files that execute in trusted contexts. Treat agent output as untrusted until a human checks the actual diff. Limit agent credentials and permissions, isolate write access where possible, and require explicit approval for pipeline, dependency, and deployment changes.
Step 5: Combine automated checks with human review
Use the tools supported by the project’s language and platform: compiler and engine diagnostics, unit and integration tests, static analysis, secret scanning, dependency vulnerability scanning, and license analysis. Add fuzzing or property-based tests for parsers, network messages, authorization rules, and other inputs with a large or adversarial space.

A clean scan is evidence, not proof. OWASP’s secure-development guidance treats automated tools as one component of a broader supply-chain program; scanners can miss logic flaws, authorization mistakes, unsafe combinations of individually acceptable components, and vulnerabilities without a detectable signature. Record findings, accepted risks, and the tests that reproduce important behavior.
Set merge rules by risk
- Require normal review for isolated, low-impact presentation changes.
- Require a reviewer familiar with the subsystem for persistence, networking, economy, or progression changes.
- Require explicit elevated approval for authentication, authorization, cryptography, CI, deployment, secrets, or dependency-policy changes.
- Block merging when required tests fail, a new dependency lacks provenance or an approved license, or a critical finding has no documented disposition.
Step 6: Check dependencies, licenses, and provenance
Inventory direct and transitive components
Confirm that every newly introduced package is the intended project, comes from a trustworthy source, is maintained well enough for the game’s support horizon, and is compatible with the target engine and platform. Inspect transitive dependencies; a direct package can pull in code that the developer never selected explicitly. Keep a manifest or software bill of materials (SBOM) and compare it with the previous revision.
Apply the project’s license policy before merge
Identify each component’s license, version, and required notices or attribution. Check whether the license is allowed for the game’s distribution model, platform, and linking or packaging method. Preserve copyright notices and source-offer obligations where required. Do not rely on a package name or an AI-generated comment as proof of licensing.

GitHub’s documented license-compliance feature evaluates dependency data, including transitive dependencies, and can block pull requests under active enforcement rulesets. GitHub describes that feature as being in public preview and subject to change, so verify its current behavior before making it the only control.
Record provenance and changes
Keep the reviewed diff, dependency report, license findings, test results, approvals, and any accepted exceptions together. Where organizational policy permits, record the tool or model identity and relevant prompt context without retaining secrets or personal data. This record helps maintainers investigate a later defect and demonstrate how a release decision was made.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.AI output and copyright are separate from dependency licensing
Ask two different questions. First, what licenses apply to code or assets incorporated from dependencies, examples, or copied material? Second, what copyright protection or rights attach to the AI-generated portion itself in the jurisdiction and release model that matter to you?
Do not assume every generated line is automatically unrestricted, and do not assume every output is necessarily infringing. Preserve evidence of human authorship, review, and edits; check the tool provider’s current terms; and obtain qualified legal advice when the uncertainty could affect a commercial release, a major asset, or an ownership dispute.
The U.S. Copyright Office’s overview states that Part 2 of its report on copyrightability of generative-AI outputs was published January 29, 2025, while Part 3 on training was released in prepublication form on May 9, 2025. Copyrightability of an output and the legality of training data are different issues. The overview does not determine the status of a particular game-code fragment, and laws differ outside the United States.

A practical pre-merge procedure
- Assign ownership: name the developer accountable for the change and a reviewer who understands the affected system.
- Freeze the scope: inspect the complete diff, generated files, manifests, scripts, workflows, and deployment assets.
- Explain the behavior: document the execution path, assumptions, error handling, state transitions, and intended tests.
- Check game boundaries: list every client-controlled value and verify server-side permission, range, rate, state, and replay checks.
- Run correctness tests: execute compiler or engine diagnostics, unit, integration, gameplay, regression, and targeted fuzz or property tests where appropriate.
- Run security checks: perform static analysis, secret scanning, dependency vulnerability analysis, and focused manual review of privileged code and infrastructure.
- Audit licenses: compare direct and transitive dependencies with the project policy, preserve required notices, and resolve unknown provenance.
- Review evidence: reproduce important findings, document accepted risks, and obtain the required approval level before merging.
- Retain the record: store the approved diff, test output, dependency and license reports, and privacy-safe provenance for future maintenance.
Common failure modes and what to do
“It passed the compiler, so it is safe.”
Compilation checks syntax and types, not authorization, economic invariants, race conditions, or license obligations. Add behavior-focused tests and a threat-model review.
“The client can send it, but our UI never does.”
An attacker does not need the UI. Validate the message at the server boundary and test forged, repeated, delayed, and out-of-order requests.
“The scanner found nothing.”
Confirm the scanner covered generated files, transitive dependencies, scripts, and the relevant language. Then perform manual review and tests for logic and architecture-specific risks.
“The package is popular, so its license is fine.”
Verify the exact version and all transitive components against the project’s distribution policy. Popularity does not replace a license record or required attribution.
“The AI wrote it, so the studio owns it.”
Ownership and copyright conclusions depend on human contribution, provider terms, jurisdiction, and the release facts. Preserve authorship records and obtain legal advice for material uncertainty.
