To evaluate a wide receiver beyond catches, yards and touchdowns, separate opportunity from performance. Start with the player’s role and routes, then consider route type, target difficulty, efficiency and yards after the catch. No single advanced statistic is a complete grade, and comparisons are most useful when they use the same season, provider and definitions.
Why the box score can mislead
Receiving totals combine a player’s skill with how often he plays, how many passes his offense throws, where he is deployed and which targets reach him. A rotational receiver may have fewer catches simply because he runs fewer routes; a high-volume receiver may accumulate yards without being especially efficient. Box-score stats describe outcomes, but on their own they do not explain the opportunities behind them.

Tracking data can add context. NFL Football Operations says its system captures player location, speed, distance traveled and acceleration ten times per second. Those measurements underpin provider-specific models, not direct readings of a receiver’s ability. NFL Next Gen Stats overview
Start with role and opportunity
Check routes and participation
Find out whether the receiver was a full-time route runner, a rotational player or a specialist. Routes run and route participation, when available, help distinguish playing time from production. Pair them with targets: a receiver cannot catch passes on routes where he is not targeted, and a low number of targets may reflect role or quarterback decisions as well as receiver performance.

Put totals beside exposure
Read receptions, yards and touchdowns alongside routes and targets. Per-target or per-route measures can help compare players with different workloads, but rates based on limited opportunities are uncertain. There is no established universal minimum sample size that makes a rate conclusive, so show the underlying route or target count rather than presenting a percentage alone.
Account for route mix and depth
Route type affects both the chance of being targeted and the conditions for a catch. A receiver running screens and short routes faces different target depths and catch conditions from one sent deep downfield. Compare players with similar route mixes where possible, and consider depth before treating raw catch rate as a fair like-for-like measure.

NFL Next Gen Stats uses player tracking to identify high-level route types. Its route-recognition explanation says route data are capped at the forward pass or a set post-snap time to limit noise from broken plays and post-catch movement; therefore, route counts and results depend on the model’s classification and inclusion rules. In the dataset reported in that article, the average pass catcher ran a go route on 22.3% of routes, and go routes were targeted 10.8% of the time. Those figures describe that article’s dataset, not a current-season benchmark for an individual player. NFL Next Gen Stats route-recognition explanation

Use efficiency metrics with their definitions
EPA per target
Expected points added (EPA) per target estimates how a target changes the value of a play in its game situation. NFL describes EPA by comparing the down, distance and field-position situation at the start of a play with its end state. It can distinguish a short catch that converts an important situation from yardage that adds less value, but it is not a standalone measure of receiver skill: play design, quarterback decisions and other context also affect the result.

Catch rate over expectation
Catch rate over expectation (CROE) compares a receiver’s catches with modeled completion probabilities for the targets he received. It helps put catch totals in the context of target difficulty. Treat it as a provider’s model-based estimate, not an objective universal standard: different models can use different data and definitions. NFL’s explanation of CROE and EPA per target is in its route-recognition article.
Separation and coverage
Separation can help describe whether a receiver gets open, but the label does not guarantee that two providers calculate the same thing. NFL Next Gen Stats discusses separation from the nearest defender and notes that typical separation varies by route. Pro Football Focus describes its 2024 “separation percentage” as measuring how often a receiver beats coverage to get open. Name the provider and definition when citing a value; do not combine differently defined figures as if they were one common stat.

Press-coverage results can add another view of a receiver’s release and performance against tight coverage. PFF announced a receiver metric for success against press coverage in its 2024 advanced-metrics article. Use it as PFF’s measure and check the applicable season’s definition before interpreting player values. PFF’s 2024 advanced-metrics announcement

A catch rate does not tell you whether targets were easy throws or contested attempts. Consider target depth, separation and coverage conditions together. NFL’s 2025 metric update describes an occlusion-aware separation feature in completion probability, illustrating that estimated catch difficulty can account for more than a receiver’s raw catch percentage. Models and definitions can change by season, so verify the current season and provider before using a ranking or comparing historical values. NFL Next Gen Stats’ 2025 metric update

Judge yards after the catch against expectation
Raw yards after catch (YAC) reward a receiver for gaining yards after securing the ball, but starting position and the defenders around him shape the opportunity. NFL Next Gen Stats’ expected YAC (xYAC) estimates how much a player would be expected to gain based on tracking context at the catch. Its YAC Success Rate indicates whether the receiver gained more or less than expectation on a per-play basis. These are model-based estimates, so read them as context for actual YAC, not a replacement for it. NFL Next Gen Stats’ xYAC explanation
Compare receivers on equal terms
- Match the season and provider. Use the same season and the same source for proprietary metrics wherever possible; definitions and models can change.
- Compare role and exposure. Put routes run, participation and targets beside receiving totals so workload differences are visible.
- Check deployment. Compare route mix and depth before drawing conclusions from catch rate or yards.
- Assess target outcomes and difficulty. Read catches and production alongside measures such as CROE, EPA per target and separation, with each metric’s provider and definition stated.
- Evaluate after-catch results in context. Compare actual YAC with xYAC or YAC Success Rate when available, while keeping the model’s estimate distinct from observed yards.
- Show sample counts. Include routes or targets with rates, especially for players with limited opportunities; do not treat a small-sample difference as definitive.
This framework helps explain whether a receiver produced on his opportunities and what kinds of opportunities he received. It does not isolate receiver talent from quarterback play, scheme, coverage or other teammates, so avoid turning any one stat into a definitive ranking.
