What Happens to a Fantasy Hockey Roster When a Player Is Out?

When a fantasy hockey player is out, you can usually bench them, move them into an eligible injured-reserve (IR) slot, add a replacement if your league permits it, or drop them. What you can do depends on the player’s platform status, your league’s roster settings, and its lineup and transaction rules. An IR slot can free an active roster place, but you may need to make room again when the player is healthy.

Start with the player’s status and your league settings

Do not assume that an injury report automatically makes a player eligible for a fantasy IR slot. Platforms use their own labels, and league managers can customize roster positions. Check the player’s status on your fantasy roster and confirm which designations qualify for an IR or inactive slot in your league.

  • Yahoo Fantasy Hockey: Yahoo distinguishes NA for players not yet active, IR for players on NHL injured reserve, and IR+ for players designated IR, day-to-day (DTD), or out (O). The league’s settings determine which roster positions are available. Yahoo’s hockey roster-position guidance explains the labels.
  • ESPN Fantasy: ESPN says only players tagged IR, IL, or O qualify for an IR/IL slot, and the league must have that slot enabled. ESPN’s guidance says IL and DTD are baseball designations rather than hockey ones. See ESPN’s IR and IL roster-spot instructions.

These labels are not interchangeable between platforms. The roster screen and settings for your active league are the practical authority.

Choose what to do with the out player

The right move depends on eligibility, the likely length of the absence, the player’s value, replacement options, and your league’s transaction rules. There is no universal injury-duration cutoff that makes holding or dropping correct.

Option What it does What to weigh
Bench the player Keeps the player on your roster without putting them in a scoring lineup. Yahoo says bench and inactive positions do not earn fantasy points; active players do. Yahoo’s roster-position guidance describes scoring positions. Whether your lineup rules let you bench the player before the relevant lock, and whether you can spare the roster place while they are out.
Move the player to IR or another eligible inactive slot Preserves the player while potentially opening an active roster place for another addition. NHL.com’s fantasy guide says placing an injured player on IR or IR+ can let you add a replacement. NHL.com’s fantasy hockey glossary discusses the strategy. Whether your league has the slot, the player’s tag qualifies, and your league permits the intended add under its waiver and transaction rules.
Hold without using IR Keeps the player on your roster while they recover, but continues to use a roster place. Expected absence, player value, roster depth, and the quality of available replacements.
Drop the player Frees a roster place for another player, but exposes the dropped player to acquisition by another manager. How much you value retaining the player compared with the replacement and the cost of using a roster spot.

Use an open roster spot carefully

If an eligible IR move opens a place, check your league’s waiver priority, add limits, and transaction rules before making a replacement plan. NHL.com’s guide recommends looking for a player whose opportunity could increase, such as a teammate of the injured player, or choosing the best available option for your roster’s needs. That is a way to assess opportunity, not a promise of equivalent production.

Yahoo’s official help describes roster positions and lineup behavior, while NHL.com’s strategy guidance dates to September 24, 2016. Treat that older guide as general strategy; your current league settings control what transactions are allowed.

Plan for the player’s return

An IR spot is not a permanent extra roster place for a healthy player. Yahoo says an active roster opening is needed to move a player out of an inactive position. ESPN says you need an empty roster spot to activate a player, which may mean dropping someone; a healthy player left in IR/IL can also prevent new adds. ESPN further notes that a waiver claim may process if the player becomes healthy after the claim is placed, but you still need room to activate them. See ESPN’s IR and IL instructions and its add, drop, and trade guidance.

Before the player is ready to return, decide which roster spot you can clear. Waiting until activation is required can force a rushed choice between the returning player and a replacement you have added.

Check lineup locks before acting

Roster moves and lineup deadlines depend on league settings. Yahoo says game start is the default deadline in specified cases, but leagues can use different settings; weekly and custom formats may work differently. NHL.com also cautions that lineup cadence and add/drop rules vary by format. Check the active league’s transaction and lineup settings rather than assuming all fantasy hockey leagues lock at the same time. Yahoo’s lineup-deadline guidance and Yahoo’s roster-change guidance cover those settings.

If you use Yahoo’s automatic lineup tool, Yahoo says it considers injury status when the tool is set; an injury reported afterward is not accounted for retroactively. Review the lineup again when a player’s status changes. Yahoo’s automatic-lineup help describes the tool.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Check the player’s fantasy status and whether it qualifies for your league’s IR or inactive slot.
  2. Confirm that the league includes the slot and review waiver, add-limit, and lineup-lock rules.
  3. If eligible, compare using IR with benching or holding the player; if not, weigh holding against dropping.
  4. If you add a replacement, choose based on available role and your roster’s needs, not the injured player’s name alone.
  5. Before the player returns, identify a roster place for activation.
