A forward deployed engineering (FDE) title can describe anything from partner-specific model and integration work to end-to-end enterprise implementation with commercial responsibilities. Before accepting, pin down what you will build, who owns it after launch, how customer work is measured, and what travel, on-call, compensation, and career progression actually mean at this employer. Get consequential answers in writing.
Start with the work: what will you actually build?
Ask for examples of the repositories, services, integrations, internal tools, and customer-specific artifacts the team has delivered. Then ask how a typical month divides among production engineering, configuration, technical discovery, demos, support, and presales. “Code when needed” is not a meaningful description of the engineering workload.

FDE postings illustrate how much the role can vary. Google DeepMind describes designing evaluations, unblocking integrations, optimizing generative AI workloads, and working with partner-specific datasets (Google DeepMind careers). Intuit describes APIs, enterprise integrations, deployment work, proof-of-value systems, and production reliability (Intuit careers). Warp describes architecting agent workflows, then hardening solutions through monitoring and iteration with real usage (Warp careers). These are examples, not a standard job definition.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Ask for a recent project example and the actual work split, not only the idealized role description.
- Find out whether the output is reusable platform code, customer-specific implementation, or both.
Trace ownership from deployment through failure and handoff
For each major artifact, identify the team or person responsible for code review, security approval, deployment, monitoring, incident response, maintenance, and handoff. Ask what happens when a customer reports a production failure after launch—and who handles it if you are unavailable.

Responsibility is not the same as authority. Clarify who can approve customer access, set technical scope, reject a request, or pause a deployment. Google DeepMind’s posting explicitly describes serving as a technical escalation path during critical launches and production issues. That does not tell you the on-call terms for another role—or even every detail of that posting’s schedule—so ask about the actual rotation, response window, escalation path, and backup coverage for this offer.
Make customer volume and commercial work visible
Ask how many customers an FDE typically supports at once, whether accounts are individually assigned or shared, and how staffing changes during deployment. Request a recent example from the hiring manager or a future teammate. Also ask how much time goes to discovery, workshops, demos, presales, adoption support, and production troubleshooting, and whether those duties count toward performance goals or compensation.

Commercial work can sit alongside engineering. Intuit’s posting connects proof-of-value work under sales-cycle pressure with reliable production systems, commercial awareness, and stakeholder management. Warp’s founding FDE role spans discovery through production delivery and sits across engineering, product strategy, and go-to-market. Ask directly how those responsibilities affect your schedule and priorities rather than assuming the job follows a conventional product-engineering rhythm.
Check how success is measured—and what you can control
Ask what your manager will use in performance reviews: technical delivery, reliability, workflow impact, adoption, customer outcomes, revenue support, or some combination. For each measure, ask what you can influence and who owns the dependencies.

Then find out how the team handles bespoke requests. Who can say no, and how do recurring customer needs become reusable product or platform capabilities? Ask for a concrete example. Google DeepMind describes turning partner evaluations and technical feedback into signals for model development and feedback-loop tooling; Warp describes surfacing friction and feature gaps to product and engineering to inform its roadmap. Those are examples of field feedback reaching product development, not proof that every employer has a mature productization process.
Put travel, hours, and on-call expectations in concrete terms
Ask for expected travel and the practical maximum, typical customer-site duration, how much notice you get, and how travel affects working hours and recovery time. “Occasional” is too vague to assess without recent team experience or a stated range.

For support coverage, ask whether on-call is scheduled, what response times are expected, how incidents escalate, and who covers nights, weekends, leave, and time-zone gaps. Ask how the team handles compensatory time after disruptive travel or incidents, and get commitments that materially affect your decision in writing. The reviewed postings do not establish a universal FDE travel or on-call standard. Google DeepMind does call for autonomy across global time zones and production escalation during launch windows; ask that employer what those expectations mean in practice for hours, rotation, and recovery.

Compare compensation on like terms
Separate base salary from target or variable pay, bonus, equity, benefits, location, and level. Confirm which level the range applies to, what conditions govern variable compensation, and the equity instrument and vesting terms—including what happens to unvested equity if you leave. A base-only figure is not directly comparable with a total-compensation figure.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ask what career capital the role builds
Ask where successful FDEs on this team have moved after one, two, or three years; how technical performance is leveled; and whether progression can lead to senior or staff engineering, product engineering, platform work, solutions architecture, or management. Find out what mentorship exists and what you should deliver in your first 30, 60, and 90 days—and who will help you ramp.
Intuit’s engineering career page describes vertical and lateral mobility and lists a software engineering path through senior, staff, principal, and distinguished levels. Treat that as one employer’s published path, not a standard FDE ladder across companies. Ask for the FDE team’s own promotion criteria and examples of internal moves.
Use the same scorecard for every offer
When weighing multiple roles, compare them on the same dimensions and ask for evidence or named owners rather than relying on title or company reputation.
- Engineering depth: production code, system design, integrations, evaluations, configuration, demos, and support mix.
- Lifecycle authority: responsibility from discovery to deployment and handoff, approval authority, and named owners after launch.
- Customer and commercial load: simultaneous accounts, deployment staffing, presales, revenue pressure, and customer-facing hours.
- Operational burden: on-call schedule, incident response, travel range, time zones, escalation coverage, and recovery time.
- Impact and control: success measures, influence over customer outcomes, authority to decline bespoke requests, and route from field needs to reusable product.
- Compensation quality: base versus variable pay, equity type and terms, vesting, benefits, location, and level.
- Career path: mentorship, first-quarter plan, technical growth, promotion criteria, and credible internal moves.
Questions to take into the offer conversation
- What repositories, services, or integrations would I own, and how much of my work reaches production?
- Who reviews, deploys, monitors, maintains, and supports each customer artifact after launch?
- How many customers would I support at once, and how does that change during a deployment?
- Which lifecycle stages do I own, and what decision authority comes with that responsibility?
- What measures are used in performance reviews, and which are within my control?
- Who can say no to a bespoke request? Can you give me a recent example of recurring field work becoming a reusable product feature?
- What were the team’s actual travel levels in a recent quarter? What are the expected and maximum levels?
- Is on-call formalized? What are its schedule, response expectations, escalation path, and backup coverage?
- How much time goes to presales, demos, workshops, and customer support?
- What should I deliver in the first 30, 60, and 90 days, and who will mentor or unblock me?
- What have successful FDEs on this team moved into, and how are they assessed for technical progression?
- Which compensation number is base, which is target or variable, and what are the equity instrument, vesting, benefits, and applicable level?
Look for specific answers that agree across the hiring manager and future peers and match the written offer. If production ownership, customer capacity, travel, on-call, or growth remains vague, ask for clarification before deciding.
