Apple Photos can find pictures by more than filename: search can use details such as date, place, people and pets, visual category, text, and captions. Use search to retrieve an item; use albums, folders, and labels when you want to create structure that lasts.
How to search Apple Photos on iPhone
- Open Photos and tap Search. Enter a month or year, city or state, business, category, event, or the name of a person or pet.
- Try text or a caption. Search can find text in an image, including examples such as an email address or phone number, as well as captions you have added.
- Refine the results. A term such as “Video” or “Portrait” can narrow a query. Swipe up to see complete results, then use available filters such as Favorites or Edited, or sort by date added or date captured.
- Search in context. Search works in Library, Collections, and within an album or collection. In an iCloud Shared Photo Library, Apple also documents searching “Shared by” and choosing a participant.
Apple documents these search options in its iPhone Photos search guide. Exact interface labels can vary by software version.
What Apple Intelligence adds to search
In Apple’s documented supported configuration, Apple Intelligence lets you describe a specific image in natural language and search video clips for key moments. This is not a feature to assume on every iPhone: Apple lists iOS 27 or later and an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later. Availability also varies by language and region, and usage limits may apply. Check Apple’s current iPhone guide for eligibility details.
How People & Pets works—and why a pet may be missing
Photos uses recognition to group images and videos of people, dogs, and cats in People & Pets. If no pets appear, the collection may be labeled People. When you name a person or pet from a photo, Photos adds that identity to the collection and applies the name to other library images and videos it recognizes. You can correct a mistaken identification, mark favorites, or hide or stop featuring someone. With iCloud Photos, Apple says People & Pets stays up to date across devices.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A missing pet collection does not necessarily mean anything is wrong. Apple says detection and library indexing must finish first. On iPhone or iPad, the device needs to be locked and connected to power during detection; on Mac, detection can run while Photos is not in use. Depending on library size and background activity, this may take up to a few days. See Apple’s guide to finding and naming people and pets.
When to use albums and folders
Search is useful for a one-off find; an album is a durable, user-created grouping. On iPhone, go to Collections > Albums to create an album, give it a name, add photos, and choose a key photo. You can rename or reorder albums and place them in folders.

With iCloud Photos, albums are stored in iCloud and available on devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Deleting an album removes the grouping, not the photos: those photos remain in your library and in any other albums that contain them. Apple’s album guide covers the iPhone workflow.
Adding searchable details on Mac
On Mac, titles and captions add context you choose yourself, which can make particular images easier to find later. Select an item and use its Info view to add or edit a title or caption; Photos also supports metadata changes such as date, time, and location. Apple’s Mac guide to titles, captions, and photo information describes these controls.

Using Mac filters and ratings
Filters are useful for broad narrowing, while a specific search or added caption can help locate a particular subject. In the Mac Photos library, filters can show categories such as Favorites, Edited, Photos, Videos, Screenshots, or Not in an Album. You can also filter by keyword and star rating, and combine multiple conditions. These are documented Mac controls; do not assume the same filter set appears on iPhone. See Apple’s Mac guide to finding photos and videos.

Duplicate detection is a separate library-maintenance tool, not a search method. On Mac, open Utilities > Duplicates to review detected items and merge them. The list may take time to populate, especially for a large library. Apple documents this workflow in its Mac duplicate-removal guide.
