Estimate an AI data pipeline in two passes: first project retained bytes from measured source and transformed data; then price storage alongside ingestion, processing, queries, serving, and network transfer. There is no defensible universal cost per terabyte: the total depends on the provider, region, storage class, workload, and retention rules. Build low, expected, and high scenarios from explicit assumptions, then check them against the provider’s current calculator and actual usage.
What to include in a capacity estimate
Raw ingestion is only a starting point. Pipelines may compress or expand data during transformation, retain raw and processed copies, and create additional datasets such as embeddings, vector indexes, feature stores, checkpoints, or intermediate outputs. Estimate each category separately rather than applying an assumed universal overhead factor.

A useful first-pass planning expression is:
retained capacity ≈ existing retained data + (daily ingested raw data × retention days × growth/seasonality adjustment)
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThen adjust for measured compression or expansion, replicas, backups, and derived datasets. This is a capacity-planning model, not a cloud provider’s billing formula; actual storage overhead and billing units vary by product.

Estimate retained bytes step by step
- Define the workload and time horizon. Record data sources and formats, existing retained data, average and peak ingestion, batch or streaming cadence, expected growth, and the retention period for each data class. Include replicas, backups, recovery copies, and materialized outputs.
- Measure a representative sample. Record raw bytes and bytes after transformation using the formats and compression you expect to deploy. Avoid assuming a compression ratio from an unrelated dataset; content and configuration affect the result.
- Project each data class separately. Multiply expected daily volume by its retention period, apply growth or seasonality assumptions, and add the relevant measured copies and derived data. For AI retrieval, measure embeddings and index storage for the chosen design; there is no established universal multiplier.
- Keep units consistent. Track decimal GB/TB or binary GiB/TiB consistently, and confirm which units the provider’s calculator uses. The reviewed provider materials do not establish one universal convention.
Build a complete cost model
Use separate rows for each potential billable activity. A service may bundle or omit some charges, so use its own current pricing documentation and calculator rather than treating one product’s rate as a cloud-wide price.
| Cost line | What to estimate |
|---|---|
| Storage | Average retained volume by storage class or tier, region, and retention period. |
| Ingestion | Data volume and the chosen ingestion service or path; check whether billing is based on raw, uncompressed, or otherwise processed data. |
| Transformation and orchestration | Compute resources, run frequency, job duration, and any idle time. |
| Queries and serving | Query frequency and data scanned, plus warehouse, cluster, or endpoint capacity used to serve results. |
| Replication, backups, and recovery | Additional copies, retention rules, and product-specific recovery or retention charges. |
| Network | Potentially billable inter-region transfer, internet egress, and service-to-service transfer. |
Separate rows make it easier to see why a pipeline costs what it does. A low storage charge can coexist with high query, transfer, or always-on compute costs.

Model retention and access behavior
Retention affects how much data accumulates, while access frequency and query patterns can influence processing and serving costs. Define retention separately for raw records, transformed datasets, indexes, logs, and other outputs instead of assigning one duration to everything.

AWS says CloudTrail Lake ingestion is charged based on uncompressed data ingested, while queries are charged based on the amount of optimized and compressed data scanned; these terms apply specifically to CloudTrail Lake, not to AWS services generally. Its documentation also distinguishes retention options: the one-year extendable option includes storage for the first 366 days, while its seven-year option includes storage in ingestion pricing. Check the current CloudTrail Lake cost documentation before applying those terms to a design.

Use data layout to control storage and query costs
Compression and columnar formats can reduce stored bytes, and partitioning and filters can reduce the data a query scans. These choices may involve trade-offs in compatibility, write behavior, and performance, so measure them with representative data and queries.
A historical AWS whitepaper example illustrates the potential, not a general forecast: its sample 8 GB CSV dataset compressed to 2 GB, a 75% reduction. The same example extrapolated to 100 TB and reported illustrative monthly costs of $2,406.40 without compression and $614.40 with compression. Those figures belong to the whitepaper’s assumptions and are not a current quote. Its GDELT example reported 102.9 GB scanned and $0.10 for an unpartitioned query versus 6.49 GB scanned and $0.006 for the partitioned example, describing a 94% saving and improved query time. See the AWS data-lake cost modeling example for its context; do not use these amounts as current service rates.

Account for AI indexes and serving endpoints
For retrieval or vector-search workloads, index storage is only part of the estimate if queries also require a serving endpoint. Databricks’ AI Search guidance says it bills for indexes that store vectors and endpoints that serve queries; it describes capacity-based endpoint scaling, usage monitoring, combining smaller workloads in some cases, and triggered sync when near-real-time updates are unnecessary. These are Databricks AI Search behaviors, not universal rules for vector services. Review the Databricks AI Search cost management guide and measure index and endpoint use for the design you intend to run.

Compare options on equal assumptions
When comparing providers, storage tiers, or batch and continuous ingestion, hold the workload assumptions constant. Compare the same region, ingestion volume and shape, measured compression, retention, query frequency and scanned volume, latency target, recovery needs, and network routes. Include every applicable storage, ingestion, query, compute, and transfer charge.
Provider pricing pages describe different product-specific cost drivers. Google Cloud says Cloud Storage pricing is largely based on storage, processing, network use, and optional caching, and provides cost estimation; use its Cloud Storage pricing information with the intended region and configuration rather than an assumed rate. Microsoft’s Azure Data Explorer cost-driver guide identifies ingestion, retention and storage duration, cluster size, schema, ingestion path, and autoscaling as relevant drivers, and describes product-specific retention-buffer and recoverability overhead. These are not defaults to apply to other services.
A reference architecture can help identify stages to account for, but it does not prescribe one required platform design. Databricks’ reference architectures describe one platform’s source, ingest, transform, query/process, serve, analysis, and storage stages.
Run scenarios and validate the estimate
- Create low, expected, and high cases. Vary ingestion, retention, measured compression, query frequency and scanned volume, and batch schedule. State the assumptions behind each case.
- Price the same scenarios. Enter the selected service, region, storage class, and workload into the provider’s current calculator or pricing tool. Confirm how it treats units, retention, and each billing dimension.
- Reconcile after deployment. Compare observed use and billed line items with the estimate. Update the assumptions when real ingestion, query scans, compute schedules, or transfers differ.
Without a specified provider, region, and pipeline workload, an exact total would imply precision the inputs cannot support. A scenario range tied to measured data is more useful than a standalone cost-per-terabyte figure.
