Quote the exact trade on the network and route you plan to use, then repeat the quote at larger sizes. Compare each result with a contemporaneous reference price and include fees, gas, and the transaction’s execution limit. This reveals how the expected trade worsens as size increases—but no quote guarantees the price you will receive when a transaction executes.
Price impact, slippage, fees, and gas are different costs
These terms describe different parts of a swap. Keep them separate when deciding whether a trade is worth making.

| Term | What it means | When it arises |
|---|---|---|
| Price impact | The change in price caused by the proposed trade itself as it uses available liquidity. | It is reflected in the quoted trade. A larger order relative to the liquidity it traverses will generally have greater impact. |
| Slippage | Price movement between the quote or submission and execution while the transaction is pending. | Other trades or changed market conditions can move the execution price before your transaction is included. |
| Pool or protocol fees | Charges associated with the swap or its route. | They affect the economic result and may be reflected differently in an interface’s price-impact figure. |
| Gas | The network cost of submitting and executing the transaction. | It is separate from the token price and can matter particularly for small trades. |
Uniswap Developers defines slippage as price movement while a transaction is pending. Slippage tolerance is the amount of execution movement you permit; it does not remove price impact already present in the quote. Check how the interface defines its displayed price-impact estimate, including whether fees are included.
Estimate a trade size step by step
- Fix the trade you are evaluating. Record the network, token addresses, direction, quote time, and whether the swap is exact-input or exact-output. Keep these the same for every candidate size; different routes or pools can return different results.
- Get a current quote. Record the input and expected output, route, fees, gas estimate, and the transaction bound: minimum output for exact-input or maximum input for exact-output.
- Choose a reference price. Compare the quote’s effective execution price with a contemporaneous reference on the same basis. For a token pair, account for token decimals and units: the effective price is output divided by input, expressed in the intended units. Uniswap’s v2 guide warns that relying only on current pool reserves without an external fair-price reference can expose a swap to front-running.
- Assess the quoted price impact. Use the interface estimate if available, or compare the quoted output with the output implied by your reference price. Keep fees distinct unless the interface clearly says they are included.
- Increase the input in steps and re-quote. Track how much additional output each added unit of input buys. If the incremental output worsens sharply, the next portion of the trade is encountering less favorable liquidity or pricing.
- Compare complete routes at the same size. Evaluate expected output after route and pool fees, gas, and execution constraints. A split or multi-pool route may differ from an estimate based on one pool’s reserves.
- Set your acceptable execution limit. Choose the minimum output or maximum input that corresponds to the loss you are actually willing to accept while the trade is pending.
- Refresh the quote before signing. Pool conditions and quotes change, and the displayed estimate cannot promise the execution price at block inclusion.
There is no universally safe trade size or slippage percentage. The acceptable limit depends on the pair, route, liquidity at the prices the trade will traverse, and your own cost threshold.

What minimum output and maximum input protect
For an exact-input swap, the transaction’s minimum output sets the least amount you will accept. For an exact-output swap, the maximum input sets the most you will spend to receive the requested amount. These bounds determine whether the transaction can execute under changed conditions while pending.
A tighter bound rejects more unfavorable execution but may cause the transaction to revert if the market moves outside it. A wider bound allows execution after a larger adverse move. Set the bound from a real loss limit, not from an assumption that a particular tolerance is suitable for every trade.

Why the pool’s reserves or total value locked are not enough
Constant-product pools
For a simplified constant-product pool with input reserve x, output reserve y, and input amount dx, the invariant is x · y = k. Ignoring fees, after adding the input the output reserve is k/(x + dx), so the output is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →dy = y − k/(x + dx) = y · dx/(x + dx)
This is why output is not simply the input multiplied by the starting reserve ratio: the trade changes that ratio as it executes. The equation illustrates a v2-style constant-product pool; an actual quote must account for fees, integer arithmetic, and implementation details.

Uniswap’s v2 documentation distinguishes exact-input quotes, which calculate output for a fixed input, from exact-output quotes, which calculate the input needed for a fixed output. It also warns that relying on an unprotected reserve lookup can be front-run and describes execution bounds based on an observed fair price.
Concentrated-liquidity pools
In designs such as Uniswap v3 and v4, liquidity providers choose price intervals. A trade uses liquidity active around the current price and can cross ticks into other liquidity. Total value locked therefore does not tell you by itself how much liquidity supports the exact price levels your trade will traverse.

Uniswap Developers explains that price impact varies with the liquidity available at different price points, and that more liquidity at a given price means lower impact for a given swap size. Its v2 DAI/USDC example says approximately 0.50% of total available capital is used for trading between $0.99 and $1.01. That is an explanatory protocol example, not a current measurement of a live pool.
