1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo estimate your gaming PC’s electricity use, measure or estimate the whole setup’s average power draw at the wall, track how many hours it spends gaming, idle, and asleep, then convert each mode to kilowatt-hours (kWh). Multiply the total kWh by the price per kWh on your electricity bill. The result depends on your hardware, schedule, what equipment you include, and your local rate—there is no single current wattage that represents every gaming PC.
How much electricity does a gaming PC use?
It varies with the system and how it is used. A gaming PC drawing more power during a game can still use a substantial amount of energy while left on at the desktop for many hours. Include the monitor and peripherals only when estimating the complete setup; for a tower-only estimate, measure the tower alone.

A useful historical reference is a 2016 study by Nathaniel Mills and Evan Mills. Their model estimated about 1,394 kWh per year for a typical 2014-era gaming computer including one display, assuming an average of 4.4 hours per day in gaming mode. The authors reported a 512 W peak during active gaming and a mode-weighted average of 212 W while the system was on for their study’s base case. These are results for the study’s measured systems and modeled usage—not a universal figure for current PCs. Read the study, “Taming the energy use of gaming computers.”

For example, RunWatts published mid-range and high-end setup illustrations in June 2026 using assumed wall draws of 350 W and 500 W, respectively, and an April 2026 U.S. residential average electricity rate of 18.05¢/kWh. Those inputs should not be treated as defaults for your setup or bill. See the dated cost illustrations.

Calculate energy use and cost
For each operating mode, use average power in watts and hours spent in that mode:
Energy (kWh) = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000
Then add the kWh for gaming, idle, and sleep as relevant. To estimate cost, multiply the total by your electricity price:

Cost = total kWh × price per kWh
Use the rate and billing period that apply to you; electricity prices can vary by location and tariff. If you want a rough monthly estimate based on daily use, a 30-day calculation is: (watts × hours per day × 30 × price per kWh) ÷ 1,000. The 30-day multiplier is an approximation. Calculator Collection explains the monthly formula and inputs.
Example: estimate separate modes
Suppose a tower averages 400 W while gaming for 3 hours each day and 70 W while idle for another 5 hours. Ignoring sleep and other equipment, the daily energy is (400 × 3 + 70 × 5) ÷ 1,000 = 1.55 kWh. Multiply 1.55 by your own price per kWh for a daily cost; multiply by the number of days in your chosen period for a longer estimate. These wattages are example inputs, not typical values.

Measure your own gaming PC at the wall
A plug-in electricity meter can measure the connected equipment’s real-world energy use. A meter such as Kill A Watt is one example; it is optional, not a requirement. Connect the equipment you want included, then measure during representative use. For a gaming-session average, record accumulated energy and elapsed gaming time; divide kWh by hours to get average kW, or multiply that result by 1,000 to express it in watts. Measuring several days can capture a more representative mix of use.
If estimating the full setup, connect the monitor and any peripherals whose consumption you want counted. If estimating only the tower, leave them out. Keep track of the hours spent gaming, idle, and asleep so the measurement reflects your routine rather than just a single session. The guide’s measurement section discusses wall meters and software readings.

- AUTOMATICALLY ALARM: When your power supply test value is normal range, the Power Supply Tester would issue a buzzer alarm, Easy to Know.
- WITH LED DISPLAY: We have developed a portable computer power tester for the power supply market that can judge the quality of the power supply. It has LCD display intuitive and accurate display voltage (+/ 0.01V), automatic fault alarm, complete test interface, small and beautiful appearance, and more test functions. It is your best choice and helper to quickly detect PC power.
- EASY TO USE: This power tester only needs to be connected to the power supply ATX connector to easily and intuitively know whether the output of each power supply is normal. It can detect ATX, BTX, ITX, TFX computer power supply, and can display various voltage and PG values in LCD screen to quickly detect the performance of computer power supply.
- PRACTICAL & CONVENIENCE: Small and practical power tester. Now the number of power output groups is increasing. As long as one of them has problem, the hardware of the computer system may work abnormally or even burn out. To measure whether the output voltage output of the power supply is stable, the player usually uses a multimeter. But for the average user is still a little troublesome.
- NOTE: It can also measure the output wire P4/P6/P8/SATA/IDE, and the external DIE/SATA/P6/P8 is the light display, there is no LCD voltage. There is LCD voltage display only when connecting to the 24pin or 20pin.
Why software readings may not match the wall
CPU and GPU monitoring software can help compare component power use across workloads, but it may not capture the rest of the system or losses from converting power inside the PC. A wall measurement of the connected equipment is the more direct way to estimate electricity drawn from the outlet.
Why the PSU rating is not your electricity use
The wattage printed on a power supply unit (PSU) is its capacity rating, not a statement that the computer continuously draws that many watts. Actual power at the wall changes with workload, hardware, settings, and operating mode. Mills and Mills found that measured peak power for their tested complete systems was around 50% below estimates based on component nameplates; that finding cautions against adding specification labels together, but it is not a correction factor to apply to every PC. The study describes its measurements and modeling.

Make estimates comparable
When comparing two setups or estimates, align the inputs rather than comparing a peak specification with an everyday average. Check that both figures use:
- Wall power measured during the same workload, or clearly identified as an estimate rather than a measurement.
- The same gaming, idle, and sleep hours over the period.
- The same equipment scope: tower only or tower plus display and peripherals.
- The same electricity price per kWh and tariff period.
Idle time matters: a lower draw sustained for many hours can add meaningfully to the total. Calculate it as its own mode instead of treating all powered-on hours as gaming hours.
