Estimate Claude API costs by modeling each kind of request separately: forecast input and output tokens, apply the selected model’s current rates and any relevant pricing modifiers, then multiply by expected request volume. Compare the result with the startup credit balance and expiry shown in Claude Console. The estimate is a planning tool, not a promise of how long credits will last; actual usage, model choice, and pricing details determine the bill.
What determines Claude API cost?
API charges depend on the model and the number of tokens processed. Input and output are priced separately, with rates listed per million tokens on Anthropic’s pricing page. Input generally includes the system instructions, conversation history, user message, retrieved material, and any tool schemas or results sent with the request. Output is the content Claude generates.

Other charges or rate rules may apply when you use prompt caching, Batch API, long-context requests, or server-side tools. Include only the features your application will actually use. Pricing and model availability can change, so check the live pricing page and confirm the model is currently available before relying on a specific rate.
How to estimate your application’s API spend
1. Separate your request types
Group calls with meaningfully different token patterns rather than averaging the whole product into one request. For example, a short classification call, a user-facing answer, and a retrieval-augmented request with substantial repeated context should be separate classes. For each, estimate calls per day or month, average input tokens, average output tokens, and any peak-usage or retry factor. This makes it easier to see which part of the product drives spend.

2. Estimate tokens for a representative request
Use representative prompts and outputs, and count tokens directly when possible. Anthropic offers a rough English-language shortcut of about four characters or 0.75 words per token, but tokenization varies by language and content. Treat that as an initial planning heuristic, not an exact conversion.
Count all content that is actually sent or returned: system instructions, prior conversation turns, retrieved passages, tool definitions and results, and expected generated output. A long conversation can have substantially more input than the latest user message alone suggests.

3. Apply the model’s rates and relevant modifiers
For each request class, use the current model-specific input and output rates. The basic calculation is:

Then multiply the per-request estimate by forecast call volume and add the totals for each request class. Keep input and output calculations separate: combining them into a single token count can conceal the effect of their different rates.
- Prompt caching: If enabled, account for cache writes and cache reads using the current pricing rules. Do not assume caching reduces charges unless your request pattern and configuration qualify.
- Batch API: For eligible asynchronous work, apply the live Batch API rates rather than assuming ordinary request rates.
- Long context: Check whether the model’s pricing changes when a request crosses a long-context threshold.
- Server-side tools: Add any tool-specific charges. Tool definitions and results may also contribute ordinary input or output tokens.
4. Build low, expected, and high scenarios
Multiply each request-class cost by the number of calls expected during your planning period. Create low, expected, and high cases by varying both request volume and token lengths—for example, fewer or more active users, shorter or longer conversation histories, and different rates of retries. Label these as your assumptions, not as Anthropic benchmarks. Do not infer a typical monthly bill or a credit duration without workload-specific inputs.

5. Compare the forecast with your actual credits
Anthropic’s Claude Startups page describes $1,000 in Claude API credits for approved companies, with credits expiring six months after the grant. That is a published offer, not a guaranteed award to every startup. Check that your company was approved and confirm the amount, grant date, expiry, and applicable terms in Claude Console. The forecast period should fit within the credit’s actual validity period.
6. Update the estimate using measured usage
Run a representative sample of your real application requests, inspect actual token usage and billed spend, and revise the assumptions. A small sample may not capture peak traffic or unusual inputs, so keep the low, expected, and high scenarios for planning rather than treating one observed average as a guarantee. Anthropic’s platform materials describe usage and cost tracking; use the figures for your account to ground the forecast.

There is no fixed number of users, calls, or months that $1,000 covers: it depends on the selected model, input and output lengths, request volume, and applicable modifiers. Estimate your own workload with the steps above, then compare its projected spend with the amount and expiry in your organization’s Claude Console billing settings.
The startup offer applies to the first-party Claude API through Claude Console. Anthropic says these credits do not apply to Claude usage billed through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or other third-party platforms. If your application uses one of those routes, budget against that provider’s rates and credits instead of subtracting Anthropic’s startup credits.
Are startup credits guaranteed for every company?
No. Anthropic’s Startup Program Official Terms say eligibility is assessed at Anthropic’s discretion and may involve factors including a company’s traction, investment or funding, and Claude integration and usage. Treat the published credit amount as an offer for approved companies, and rely on the award and terms shown for your own account.
Which costs and assumptions should you compare?
If your application has meaningful alternatives, compare them on the same workload rather than choosing by token rate alone. Consider model input and output rates alongside task quality and latency, and compare uncached with cached requests, synchronous with batch-eligible work, and ordinary with long-context use where those patterns apply. Also compare the billing route: first-party API credits are distinct from a cloud provider’s billing and credit programs.
Finally, distinguish a rough token estimate from measured usage. Anthropic’s character-and-word shortcut can help with an early forecast, but representative requests provide a more relevant basis for budgeting your application.
