It can connect eligible phones where a participating carrier has no terrestrial signal, provided the service is available in that country and the phone can reach a satellite. What you can do, how well it works and whether your phone qualifies depend on the specific service and location.
How satellite-to-phone service differs from cellular
A traditional mobile network connects your phone to nearby cell sites. Direct-to-phone satellite service instead links a compatible phone to a satellite when terrestrial coverage is unavailable. The FCC uses the term Supplemental Coverage from Space (SCS) for this kind of U.S. service. The NTIA describes direct-to-device connectivity as a satellite communicating with an end-user device without specialized hardware or a large ground antenna.

That distinction describes the connection, not a promise that every ordinary phone can connect to every satellite service. Operators need compatible spectrum and satellites, carrier arrangements, regulatory authorization, and supported devices. A planned service or technical demonstration alone does not establish that customers can use it.

Cell towers generally provide the more dependable connection wherever their network reaches: the phone communicates with nearby infrastructure rather than relying on a clear path to a satellite. Satellite-to-phone service is most useful in remote areas and other places outside terrestrial tower coverage. Its value is extending reach into some coverage gaps, not outperforming towers everywhere.

Satellite reception depends on the handset having a usable path to the sky. Buildings, terrain, foliage and indoor surroundings can obstruct or weaken the signal; dense urban settings can also make reception difficult. A service map or advertised footprint is not a guarantee of usable signal at a particular spot.
Actual availability depends on the operator’s satellite coverage and spectrum, a participating mobile carrier, local regulatory approval, phone eligibility and conditions at the user’s location. For example, T-Mobile’s T-Satellite page describes its service for places without ordinary coverage and provides current eligibility and enrollment information. Check the operator’s live information for your own location and phone.
Is satellite-to-phone faster than cellular?
There is no established, current, independent, like-for-like speed comparison between live satellite-to-phone services and terrestrial mobile networks in the sources used here. Performance depends on the particular service, location, device, network load and activity, so there is no single speed figure that applies to either category.

- Below 1 Mbps download: A 2025 assessment by Telecom, Media and Finance Associates in a white paper commissioned by the Wireless Infrastructure Association described then-current satellite direct-to-device performance as below 1 Mbps download. This is a dated industry assessment, not a universal specification for today’s services.
- Over 150 Mbps peak per cell: AST SpaceMobile’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, states this as a peak capability for its next-generation BlueBird satellites. It is a company-stated capability, not a typical user result or an independent measurement of a live consumer service.
These figures describe different services, dates and metrics. They should not be treated as comparable real-world test results. Cellular performance also varies with signal, network load, device and location; the available sources do not establish a universal cellular speed number for comparison.
What can you do over a satellite link?
Do not assume that a satellite-to-phone service supports every task you can perform on cellular. A provider may offer only a subset of functions, and capabilities can evolve as networks and devices change. Check what the particular service supports—such as messaging, emergency messaging, voice or general data—and distinguish currently available features from planned or demonstrated ones.
For a practical comparison, assess the services against these questions:
- Is the service available in your country and at the place you need it?
- Does it support your carrier, phone, operating-system version and plan?
- Does it handle the specific activity you need, such as messaging or data?
- Will you usually have a sufficiently clear view of the sky, including where you expect to use it?
- Are local speed and latency measurements available for the service and activity that matter to you?
- What are the current cost and enrollment terms on the carrier’s page?
The sources available for this comparison do not establish current, comparable prices or local performance measurements. Confirm both with the carrier rather than relying on a general claim about satellite service.

Do you need a special phone?
Some direct-to-phone services are designed to work with eligible smartphones rather than a dedicated satellite handset. That does not mean every phone or carrier is supported. Eligibility can vary by operator, phone model, software, plan, country and supported function. Check the current device and enrollment information from the service provider before relying on it.
A dedicated satellite phone or satellite messenger is a separate category of equipment; it is not automatically required for direct-to-phone service. Whether one is appropriate depends on the service and communications you need.
Why service varies by country and carrier
Satellite operators need appropriate spectrum rights and regulatory permission to provide service in each market, as well as arrangements with mobile operators where required. An authorization in one country does not imply availability elsewhere, and an announced partnership does not by itself confirm that a service is generally available to customers.

In the United States, the FCC’s December 2024 order records that it authorized SpaceX to provide SCS on November 26, 2024, and discusses operator arrangements including SpaceX and T-Mobile. That order is useful regulatory context, not a current catalog of services or proof that every feature discussed in historical plans is available now.
Quick comparison
| Question | Traditional mobile network | Satellite-to-phone service |
|---|---|---|
| How does the phone connect? | To nearby terrestrial cell sites. | Directly to satellites when the service can connect and terrestrial coverage is missing. |
| Where is it most useful? | Where the carrier has usable tower coverage. | Some remote or other locations beyond tower coverage, subject to satellite reach and local conditions. |
| Does it work indoors? | Depends on the local cellular signal and building conditions. | A clear path to the sky is important; buildings and other obstructions can weaken or block reception. |
| What speed should you expect? | Varies by location, signal, network load and device; no universal figure is established here. | Varies by service and conditions; no current independent, apples-to-apples comparison is established here. |
| Will a regular phone work? | Only if it is compatible with the carrier and its network. | Only if the phone, carrier, plan, software, country and required function are eligible for that service. |
| What functions are supported? | Depends on the carrier and network. | Depends on the specific provider; verify support for messaging, emergency messaging, voice or data individually. |
How to choose between them
If you usually have tower coverage, a terrestrial network remains the straightforward choice for regular mobile use. If you travel through coverage gaps, satellite-to-phone service may provide an additional way to connect, but only if the service is supported where you are and your phone is eligible. Check the exact functions and sky conditions you need; treat advertised coverage and peak capability as different from a guarantee of usable service at your location.
