Estimate MediaPackage’s live-streaming charges as ingest volume × the regional ingest rate, plus origin-and-packaging volume × the regional origin-and-packaging rate. For a 24/7 channel, ingest depends on the total bitrate and number of incoming streams; origin and packaging depend on audience video volume that is not served from the CDN cache. Encoding, CDN delivery and any applicable data transfer belong on separate lines of the bill.
AWS’s published example totals $1.3505 per hour for MediaPackage ingest and origin/packaging in US East (N. Virginia), using its example workload and displayed rates. It is an illustration, not a quote for your channel or a complete YouTube-streaming bill.

What you need before estimating
Collect inputs for the actual architecture and audience rather than starting with a single monthly price. MediaPackage charges vary with both the data it receives and the data it originates and packages.
- Region and workflow: identify the AWS Region and MediaPackage version or workflow you intend to use. Use the applicable current rates for that Region.
- Incoming streams: record the bitrate of every rendition in each input stream and add the bitrates together. Also record the number of input streams, including redundant inputs.
- Active hours: for a continuous channel, model 24 hours × 7 days per week. For a monthly estimate, state the number of billable hours you used; months do not all have the same number of hours.
- Average audience: use average concurrent viewers across the full day, not only the peak.
- Watched bitrate: estimate the average bitrate viewers actually receive. If the audience watches different renditions, use a defensible audience-weighted average.
- Cache performance: obtain the CDN cache-hit ratio, or estimate the fraction of audience traffic that reaches MediaPackage. A 97.5% hit ratio means 2.5% of the relevant viewer volume reaches MediaPackage.
- Other services: note the CDN, encoder and any other AWS services in the design, plus whether delivery goes over the internet or through a CDN other than CloudFront.
Calculate MediaPackage ingest
Ingest is based on the volume MediaPackage receives, so both the aggregate input bitrate and the number of inputs matter. A redundant input can improve resilience but also increases the volume used in this estimate.

- Convert the sum of input bitrates into GB per hour using one consistent conversion method.
- Multiply that hourly volume by the number of input streams.
- Multiply the resulting ingest GB by the modeled active hours and the current regional ingest rate per GB.
AWS’s pricing-page example converts one 9.5 Mbps input stream to 4.175 GB per hour using its stated conversion. Two redundant streams therefore produce 8.35 GB per hour of ingest. At the example’s displayed US East (N. Virginia) rate of $0.030 per GB, the example ingest cost is $0.2505 per hour. Those are AWS example inputs and rates, not a current guaranteed rate for another workload or account.
Calculate origin and packaging
Origin-and-packaging volume depends on how much audience video traffic is requested from MediaPackage after CDN caching. Estimate audience volume first, then apply the cache-miss share.

- Multiply average watched bitrate by average concurrent viewers and the modeled hours, converting the result to GB with the same unit convention used throughout the calculation.
- Multiply total viewer GB by 1 − CDN cache-hit ratio to estimate the volume reaching MediaPackage.
- Multiply that originated volume by the current regional origin-and-packaging rate per GB.
In AWS’s example, 1,000 average viewers watching at 2 Mbps generate 878.91 GB per hour under AWS’s conversion. With an assumed 97.5% CDN cache-hit ratio, 2.5% reaches MediaPackage: 878.91 × 0.025 = 21.97 GB per hour. At the example rate of $0.050 per GB, origin and packaging cost $1.10 per hour. Adding the example ingest charge gives $1.3505 per hour for those two MediaPackage charge categories.

Use a worksheet, then validate the rates
Keep units visible in the worksheet and avoid mixing decimal and binary conversions between steps. AWS’s pricing-page example uses 1024 in its bitrate-to-volume conversion; use a consistent method when reproducing that example, and validate current service rates in AWS Pricing Calculator.

Use the calculator with your Region and workload rather than carrying forward the example’s displayed rates. AWS notes that data transfer can apply when output goes over the internet or through a CDN other than CloudFront. A CDN such as CloudFront can reduce the volume originated and packaged by MediaPackage when requests are served from cache; CDN delivery remains a separate architecture cost.
Keep the MediaPackage estimate separate from the full stream bill
The $1.3505-per-hour example is a MediaPackage subtotal for ingest and origin/packaging under AWS’s stated assumptions. It does not include every service required to operate a stream. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment example treats MediaLive encoding, MediaPackage ingest, MediaPackage packaging/origination and CloudFront distribution as distinct cost components. The rates in an architecture example are workload-specific and can age, so estimate each component using the intended design and current rates.

Do not assume that sending a stream “to YouTube” means MediaPackage is the encoder or that a direct MediaPackage-to-YouTube path has been established. YouTube’s documentation describes configuring an encoder with a YouTube stream URL and key for RTMP(S); it also supports HLS ingest with specific segment, playlist and HTTPS requirements. Confirm which component performs any required protocol conversion and publishing before treating an architecture estimate as an integrated MediaPackage-to-YouTube design. HLS may have higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments.

How to make the estimate useful for your channel
- Model the same average concurrent audience and watched bitrate when comparing designs; a peak-viewer estimate is not a substitute for a full-day average.
- Show the input bitrate ladder and redundant input count explicitly so the ingest volume can be checked.
- State the cache-hit ratio and its source or status as an assumption. A change in cache misses changes MediaPackage origin volume.
- Keep the Region and rate date with the estimate, and rerun it when rates or the workload change.
- Compare like with like: do not compare a MediaPackage-only subtotal with another option’s all-in encoding and delivery cost.
