There is no single price for running a large language model: estimate your workload’s input and output tokens, apply the selected model’s current rates, then add any applicable charges for caching, processing tier, tools, or media. To make the estimate useful, record the assumptions and the date you checked pricing, and compare it with actual usage once representative traffic is available.
Start with the workload, not a model’s headline rate
A model’s listed input price alone cannot tell you what a workload will cost. Two requests to the same model can differ substantially if one includes a long conversation history, generates a longer response, uses a cache or tool, or falls under a different context-length or processing tier.

First define what you are estimating: a representative request, a month of expected traffic, or a comparison between providers. For each request type, record the expected request count and the features that can change billing. Include system instructions and relevant conversation history in the input-token estimate, not just the latest user message.
- Input tokens and generated output tokens
- Expected request volume, separated into distinct request classes where their token use differs
- Cache-hit and cache-write shares, if caching applies
- Context-length tier and processing mode, such as standard or batch
- Expected retries, repeated prompts, agent loops, and any generated reasoning tokens billed by the provider
- Tool calls, grounding, and image, audio, video, or other modality usage
- Region, cloud platform, and endpoint, if they affect the rate

Estimated token cost = (input tokens / 1,000,000 × input price per million) + (output tokens / 1,000,000 × output price per million)
Use the rates that match the selected model and applicable tier. Do not apply one blended rate to all tokens unless you have calculated that blend from the workload’s input-output mix and clearly label it as an average.

If your traffic includes materially different request types, estimate each separately and sum them:
Estimated monthly token cost = Σ (monthly requests for each class × estimated cost per request in that class)
For example, a short customer question and a request that passes a large document into the model should not automatically share one average token count. Separate classes make the assumptions visible and show which type of traffic drives the estimate.

When possible, use provider usage data or measure a representative sample from the application. Count the full prompt sent to the model, including system instructions and conversation history, as well as the generated output. A one-question, one-answer estimate can miss extra calls caused by retries, agent loops, tools, or reasoning that is billed as output.

If token counts or traffic patterns are not yet known, prepare low, expected, and high scenarios. Vary the assumptions that actually drive cost—such as request volume, prompt length, output length, retry frequency, and cache reuse—and state those assumptions beside each result. These are planning estimates derived from provider rates, not a guarantee of the provider’s eventual bill.
Check every billing dimension that can change the total
Input, output, and reasoning
Providers may charge different rates for input and output. Check the provider’s billing definition for reasoning or thinking tokens: some schedules include them in output billing even when the user-visible answer is short.
Context length and service tier
Check whether the model has a long-context threshold that changes the rate, and whether the request falls into that tier. A batch rate or another discounted service tier applies only if the workload uses that mode and meets its conditions; do not use it in a standard-processing estimate by default.

Cache creation, cache hits, and storage
Some providers price cache writes, cache hits, and storage differently from ordinary input. Estimate the portion of tokens that actually qualifies for reuse, along with cache creation and any storage duration charges. Repeated-looking text is not enough to assume that every request receives cached-input pricing. Google’s optimization documentation explains that explicit cache objects have a time-to-live and that billing depends on cached token count and storage duration.

Tools, grounding, and media
Search grounding, code execution, and image, audio, video, or other multimodal inputs may have separate charges or different token accounting. Add those charges to the text-token subtotal rather than treating that subtotal as the complete bill.
Region and serving channel
Where a rate varies by region, cloud platform, or endpoint, use the rate for the deployment you plan to run. A price from another region or serving channel may not apply.

Official pricing schedules illustrate why a single per-token number is not enough: the OpenAI API pricing page separates input, cached input, cache writes, and output, and lists short- and long-context rates for models; Google’s Gemini API pricing page separates input, output, and context caching, notes that output pricing includes thinking tokens, and lists separate prices for some grounded requests. Anthropic’s list prices dated May 27, 2026 distinguish standard and batch processing and include cache-write and cache-hit rates, with scope and context-window details.

For a fair provider comparison, apply each candidate’s current rates to the same request classes and token mix. Also compare model capability for the task, long-context behavior, cache and batch eligibility, deployment region, and extra tool or modality charges; a lower listed input rate by itself does not prove a lower total bill or equivalent task quality.
Worked example: calculate a request and monthly subtotal
Suppose a hypothetical rate card charges $2 per million input tokens and $8 per million output tokens. A request with 4,000 input tokens and 1,000 output tokens has this text-token subtotal:
(4,000 / 1,000,000 × $2) + (1,000 / 1,000,000 × $8) = $0.016
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAt 100,000 identical requests, the subtotal is $1,600. Both figures are hypothetical arithmetic, not a current provider quote or a claim about typical usage. Add or exclude caching, batch, tool, modality, and other charges according to the actual service.
Quick Recap
Turn the estimate into a forecast you can audit
- Define request classes. Group requests with meaningfully similar prompts, expected outputs, and processing paths.
- Measure or forecast tokens. Use representative usage data where available; otherwise state low, expected, and high assumptions for input and output.
- Choose the applicable rate card. Match model, input and output rates, cache treatment, context tier, service mode, region, and endpoint.
- Add non-text charges. Include applicable tools, grounding, modalities, storage, retries, or other provider-defined billing items.
- Scale by expected volume. Multiply each request class’s per-request estimate by its monthly count, then sum the classes.
- Check against observed usage. Compare the forecast with provider usage data or invoices once representative traffic is running, and revise the assumptions that explain the difference.
