You do not have to choose between answering every notification and cutting people off. Keep the conversations that matter, mute the ones that are useful but noisy, and leave threads that are finished, irrelevant, or uncomfortable. If you value someone in the group, keep that relationship going directly.
Choose the least drastic option that solves the problem
First ask whether you still need information from the group. Then decide whether you want fewer alerts or to stop being a member. App rules can limit what “leave” means, while group size, closeness, practical obligations, and the presence of an administrator affect whether a note is helpful.

| Situation | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| The chat has a useful purpose or helps sustain relationships you want to keep | Stay, but give it only the attention it deserves | You do not need to respond to every message. A group chat cannot tell you how many other conversations someone is managing or how quickly they can reply, as communication researcher Jeremy Birnholtz told TIME. |
| You want the information, but the alerts are distracting | Mute the conversation or use its alert-silencing setting | Messages can continue to arrive, and unread counts may remain. Check the group on a schedule that works for you. |
| The event is over, the thread no longer matters, or participation feels persistently uncomfortable | Leave if the app permits it | Consider practical responsibilities and whether a short note would prevent confusion. |
| You want to stop following the thread but value particular members | Leave, then contact those people one-to-one | Direct messages preserve a useful connection without keeping you in the group; WIRED describes this as a compromise for people who want to exit the thread without excluding themselves from messaging entirely (WIRED). |
Mute a noisy chat without losing it
Muting changes notifications, not membership. It is a good middle ground when the chat still carries information you may need but does not deserve to interrupt your day. Pick a time to check it, and ask a trusted person to send urgent or important updates directly if that would help.
WhatsApp’s Help Center lists group message and call notification mute periods of 8 hours, 1 week, or Always. Muting does not stop messages from arriving: unread counts remain, and read receipts can still be sent if enabled. WhatsApp says contacts are not notified that you muted the chat. See its current instructions for muting or unmuting individual or group chat notifications.

Apple’s group-text instructions distinguish leaving from silencing. If the leave option is unavailable, Hide Alerts can silence notifications for that thread; messages still arrive, and other alerts are unaffected. Menus and capabilities vary among apps and versions, so check the current group-info or notification settings in the app you use.
When and how to leave
Leaving etiquette depends on the group, not on a universal rule. A close friend group, a work thread, and a temporary event chat create different expectations. Debrett’s director Rupert Wesson told the Associated Press that digital etiquette is “context specific and many of the rules are implicit rather than explicit,” and advised making clear that you are leaving immediately so the chat does not fill with farewell messages (AP).

- Funny Family Group Chat is for men, women, dad, uncles, mums, moms, sisters, brothers, sons, daughters who have joined the chat app on their cell phones.
- Funny phone gifts for family members. Designed in a grunge style.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- For a small, close, or work-related group: A brief note can prevent confusion. If there is an administrator, consider telling them, especially if the group has a practical purpose.
- For a large or one-off event chat: If the event is finished and nobody needs an explanation, an announcement may add little. Leave without turning the exit into another group conversation.
- If you owe the group something: Share the needed information or settle the practical obligation first, where possible.
For example: “I’m leaving this thread now that the event is over—please text me directly if you need me.” Keep the wording factual and short; you do not have to defend your attention choices.

If the problem is what people are saying
A group may be worth keeping even when a particular joke or topic crosses a line. If it feels safe and worthwhile, name the issue calmly—privately or in the chat—and give people a chance to adjust. TIME recounts therapist John Sovec describing how lightly identifying an off-putting joke helped repair an interaction; that is a possible approach, not a guarantee that every group will respond well (TIME). If the discomfort continues, muting or leaving remains an option.

Leaving one chat does not require ending individual relationships. After you exit, send a direct message to anyone you want to stay in touch with, or suggest another way to share information that matters. Group notifications can promise closeness without reliably delivering attentiveness, therapist Patrick Walden told TIME; a one-to-one conversation can be a better fit for a relationship you want to maintain.
