“Moved to trash” means an app placed an item—such as an email or file—in its Trash or Deleted Items area instead of its previous location. It does not automatically mean the item was permanently erased. Whether you can restore it depends on the app, your permissions, and any administrator retention rules.
What happens when an item is moved to Trash?
The item changes location or status within an app. It is no longer in its ordinary inbox, folder, or workspace, but may remain in a separate Trash or Deleted Items area. Some services let you restore it from there; others permanently remove it after a set period or when the folder is emptied.

The phrase alone does not identify the app or tell you how long the item will remain recoverable. For a specific item, open that service’s Trash or Deleted Items folder and check its current recovery instructions.

How recovery differs by service

What to check if you need to restore something
- Identify the app and account. The same phrase can describe different retention rules in email, cloud storage, and collaborative workspaces.
- Open Trash or Deleted Items. Look for the item and use the service’s restore or move option if available.
- Check access and workspace status. In shared services, you may need edit permissions; the original folder or team may also need to still exist.
- For a work account, ask an administrator. Enterprise settings or retention policies may affect whether an item can be restored and how it is handled.
Does “moved to trash” mean permanently deleted?
Not necessarily. In Gmail, Trash can hold messages for up to 30 days before permanent deletion. In Outlook for Mac, items are not permanently deleted until Deleted Items or Trash is emptied. Other services apply their own rules, and shared-workspace permissions or administrator policies can change what happens. The wording by itself is not a reliable promise of either recovery or permanent deletion.
