Equip Ambers at a Lantern. Interact with the Lantern, open the Amber equipment option, and choose the Amber you want to slot. The number of slots grows as William levels up, so an Amber you collect may not be usable immediately if you have not reached the required progression threshold.
Equip an Amber at a Lantern
- Find and interact with a Lantern.
- Open the Lantern’s Amber equipment option.
- Select the Amber you want to use and confirm the slot.
Connor Bridgeman, director of marketing at Lyrical Games, summarizes the process as: “Slot them in when you visit a lantern.” Lanterns also provide the game’s rest, level-up and travel functions, but the Amber menu may not appear until your character has unlocked an equipment slot.

Why the Amber option may be missing
Finding an Amber does not automatically mean you can equip it. Your available Amber slots increase as William gains levels, and the reviewed guides do not publish a universal button sequence or a precise level-by-level slot table. If a Lantern shows only rest, level-up and travel, continue progressing until the relevant slot unlocks, then check the Lantern again.
You can also use Catalyst Clots from your inventory to push William past the next level threshold, according to the official Xbox Wire guide. This can make a newly available slot appear sooner when you are close to the required level.

What Ambers do to your build
Ambers are build modifiers rather than simple equipment-stat upgrades. Some provide a direct strength increase, while others alter a core combat rule. The best choice depends on whether you want to counter ranged attacks, amplify weak-point damage or sustain yourself through close combat.

Choose for your combat pattern
- Use Marksman’s Bane if you are comfortable reading projectile timing and want successful defense to replenish pistol ammunition.
- Use Volatile End if your build consistently targets weak points and benefits from area damage after a precise shot.
- Use Butcher’s Carnage if you fight in melee and can recover health by staying on the offensive; its Flask restriction makes cautious, ranged play less suitable.
How to find more Ambers
Many Ambers are hidden in optional areas, so a main-path playthrough is unlikely to reveal the complete collection. Search side routes, optional rooms and areas that are easy to skip before moving on from a level.

PowerPyx’s collectible guide, dated October 13, 2026, records 28 unique Ambers across 55 collectible locations. You need one of each of the 28 unique Ambers for the Ambersmith achievement. Duplicate pickups have another purpose: 15 Ambers can be upgraded to level 3 by collecting their duplicates.
Upgrade strategy and collection planning
Prioritize the Amber that matches your build
Do not wait to complete the entire collection before using an Amber. Once a slot is available, equip the modifier that supports the way you currently deal damage or survive encounters. A defensive ranged player may gain more from Marksman’s Bane than from a melee sustain effect, while a weak-point-focused loadout can extract more value from Volatile End.

Track duplicates separately from first-time pickups
The first copy of an Amber advances your collection toward the Ambersmith achievement. Additional copies matter for upgrading the 15 upgradeable Ambers to level 3. Because there are 55 locations but only 28 unique Ambers, revisiting optional content can produce duplicates rather than a new effect.

- No Amber menu at the Lantern: level William further; the slot may not yet be unlocked.
- You are close to the next level: use available Catalyst Clots to cross the threshold, then revisit a Lantern.
- You have collected several Ambers but cannot equip all of them: collection size and available slots are separate; slots expand with progression.
- You are unsure which Amber to use: compare the combat behavior it changes and any restriction attached to that benefit.
- You are hunting the achievement: collect one of each of the 28 unique Ambers, checking optional areas rather than following only the critical path.
In short, the required interaction is always a Lantern, but access to the Amber menu is progression-gated. If the option is absent, continue leveling William instead of assuming the Amber is unusable or that the Lantern is broken.
