Keep the order records. These checks cannot guarantee a trouble-free purchase, but they help you spot warning signs and act promptly if something goes wrong. The guidance below reflects U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advice; shoppers elsewhere should consult their local consumer-protection authority and applicable rules.
How to check whether an online seller and listing are trustworthy
Look beyond star ratings
Search an unfamiliar seller’s name with terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” Compare multiple sources and consider who posted each review and their history. The FTC warns that fake reviews can be positive or negative, so a high rating by itself is not proof that a seller is reliable.

Read the entire listing
Check the item’s condition and description, including labels such as refurbished, vintage, used, or close-out. For products where appearance or condition matters, look for credible photos of the actual item. Be cautious if an expensive branded product is listed at an unusually low price.

Find the seller’s contact details and identify who is responsible for payment, delivery, returns, and disputes. Marketplace policies vary: some offer help or refunds only under defined conditions, while others leave more of the resolution to buyer and seller. Read the rule that applies to this seller and item rather than assuming every marketplace purchase has the same protection.

What to compare before checkout
Compare sellers or marketplace listings on the points that affect the transaction—not just the advertised price.

Add up the complete cost, including delivery and additional fees. Confirm the promised delivery date, return window, who pays return shipping, any restocking fee, and whether sale items have different terms. If something is unclear, ask the seller before paying and keep the response. Do not proceed if the answers or policies leave you unable to understand the transaction.

Choose a payment method with a remedy path
The FTC recommends paying by credit card when possible. Qualifying charges may be disputed if an item does not arrive or is wrong or defective. Contact the card issuer promptly and follow its process and deadlines; protections are not identical across payment types.
HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and a website; it does not establish that the seller is honest. As the FTC puts it, “Scammers know how to encrypt sites, too.” (Federal Trade Commission, Online Shopping | Consumer Advice.)

Avoid a seller who insists on gift cards, wire transfers, a payment app, or cryptocurrency, since these methods can make recovering money difficult. On a marketplace, avoid paying outside its system if doing so removes buyer protections that would otherwise apply.
Save evidence as soon as you place an order
Keep records that let you show what was offered, what you paid, and what happened. Save:

- The order confirmation, messages with the seller, and payment statement.
These records may help when you contact the seller, marketplace, or payment provider.
What to do if an order is late, missing, or wrong
If delivery is late or the order never arrives
Compare the actual timing with the seller’s promised delivery date, then contact the seller or marketplace promptly and keep the exchange. Under the FTC’s U.S. guidance, sellers must ship as promised. If no shipping time was promised, the FTC says the seller must ship within 30 days after receiving the required order and payment information or permission to charge. If a credit-card purchase does not arrive, dispute the charge with the issuer and follow its required process.

If the seller does not resolve the problem
Check the marketplace’s applicable process and deadlines, and contact your payment provider promptly if a payment dispute may apply. For a concern about a dishonest business that remains unresolved, the FTC directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. A report is not a substitute for contacting the seller, marketplace, or payment provider about a particular order.
If merchandise arrives that you did not order
FTC guidance says federal law does not let companies send unordered merchandise and then demand payment for it. If you believe the shipment is connected to a dishonest business, consider reporting the concern and keep the packaging and related records.
Consider privacy and app permissions
A shopping site or app may collect contact details, purchase information, location, and information about when and how you pay. Read its privacy policy, user agreement, or terms to understand the stated collection, use, sharing, and protection of data. If an app asks for location access, check whether that permission makes sense for the service before granting it.
